70 Road Runner resto - 02/13/09 04:41 AM

Thought I'd put up a few pics of my project. Felt it only fair to share, lord knows I get my share of info from this site. It's a post car with column shift and A/C. I'll post some starting pics and then a few in it's current state, bodywork complete and ready for paint when the weather breaks. I'm currently working on restoring the subassemblys. So I'll try and post a few photos when I can.

Looks like you had a very solid car to start with,, did you sandblast it yourself?

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 02/13/09 10:30 PM

Actually it was pretty rough. We replaced front floors, trunk and quarters , the common spots. I'll try to resize some of the pics from the shop. I sand blasted the bottom just to get any heavy rust then sent it out for plastic media for the rest. Here is a trunk picture.

Here are a couple of before pics of my steering column. It's my next subassembly rebuild. I'll post some after pics as I progress. Everything should clean up ok except for the wheel, it has some major cracks. If anyone has a decent one for sale shoot me a PM. I can repair some small cracks if need be.

We got some really nice weather here today, so I took advantage of it and started to sandblast the dash. When I brought it back in to blow it off I noticed what you see in the pic on the back side to the left of the steering column. Amazing it didn't blast off. anyone else ever notice this during a restore ? Seems it was a note to the paint shop. Just thought it might be of some interest.

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 03/03/09 12:46 AM

Looks good, I just took mine apart for my '68. Started painting but will hopefully finish up next weekend. Did you have to buy anything parts wise for this column? I need to find a few trinkety things, like the little pointer for the gear indicator and a blinker switch. I know yours is a '70 and a little diffferent but where did you get parts if any? Thanks and keep up the good work. Doing the little things now will make it that much more enjoyable once everything comes together.

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 03/03/09 01:16 AM

What did you use on the shaft? Polish, paint?

Looks real nice.
Posted By: 68Barracuda

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 03/03/09 02:28 AM

I was lucky and didn't need to buy anything. But I have seen the switch you need on ebay. For the shaft I cleaned it, then sprayed it with Rust-oleum appliance epoxy (7887 stainless steel then cleared it.

Thanks,Rob

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 03/05/09 05:01 PM

I'm doing the same on my 68. To take the column apart do you take the dog leg on the engine side off or did you take the upper bearing off to take the steering wheel collar off?

I can't quite figure out which end need disassembled to take the column completely apart.

Nice work and clean car by the way.

Steering column looks nice Rob! I'm planning on doing mine this spring also.

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 03/06/09 04:32 AM

You need to take the top apart. There is a snap ring and a c clip on the steel shaft. And you have to press the bearing off. There is a special tool but I didn't have one so I had to make up a jig with some c clamps. Be carefull the manual stresses several times do not hammer on it. Due to the plastic shear pins in the column. If you go to the mopar muscle web site. You may be able to find an article on one they did. It was pretty helpfull.
Good luck, Rob

So, are you keeping it all stock with the exception of the color change?
Any other changes ie hood/wheels/engine/etc?
Posted By: 68Barracuda

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 10/07/09 03:04 AM

Won't be all stock. I'm adding an air grabber hood. I have the factory ralley wheels but I will probably upgrade to something else since they are 14" 383 or 440 for the motor unless I hit the lottery then it's HEMI all the way.

Jerry's Hot Rods a small shop in Hampstead, Md. Jerry is a Mopar guy that previously worked for a Chrysler dealer. He has several cars himself. He also does quite a bit of work for some pretty picky Camaro shops COPO cars RS and Z28 cars. I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed he is easy to work with and takes the car in the direction you want.

Wow Rob,
Your car is looking great. I live not to far from Hampstead and may want to get Jerry to look at my car. Did he do the metal work or just the paint? One other question, What did you do about your rear springs? New if so what brand, or rebuild originals? Thanks, Brian
Posted By: 68Barracuda

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 11/01/09 09:18 PM

Brian,

Jerry did all the metal work and the paint. He is very good with replacement panels or fabricating odd pieces from raw metal. While my car was there I saw him chop the roof on a street rod and lower it a couple inches. Replace a rusted camaro roof with a repro skin and obviously bring my rusty heap back from the dead. As far as the springs go I lucked in to a nice set at Carlisle so I cant help you much there.

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 11/16/09 02:16 AM

It went very smooth. I read a few post on how others had installed theirs. I used the 3m yellow adhesive. I did it in short sections. Put glue on the body then pressed gasket in place for a second , them pulled it away and let the glue dry for a few minutes. Then just press in place and move on. I tested a few pieces and this way seemed to give the best bite.

Thanks Rick.
I like using "punch lists" like this when we are re-assembling a kitchen or bathroom. There are absolutely sequence of event type issues that can make life miserable if "un-sequenced!"

My bodyman applied it. It's sprayed on with a special gun I'll try and get the name or maybe someone cane chime in on it. I know it's adjustable so you can get your desired results. Check Eastwood I think they carry the product.

The make is Lord Fusor the gun is #3009915 it cost around $200. The product sprayed is Sound deadner #805. The gun is adjustable allowing you to create different textures. Hope this helps those that inquired.

Whats your experience with those and what brand are they?
Posted By: 68Barracuda

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 07/07/10 04:07 AM

Mine are just some cheap ones from harbor freight. They work ok on smooth concrete but as the car gets heavier it's getting tougher to move around. Jerry has a nice set at the bodyshop that you put under the wheel then step on a lever to lift the car for movement. They seem to work better you may want to do a search on them but I think harbor has them as well.

Thanks, Rob

It looks great with the Mirada wheels on it. If you told me without looking at the pics I would have said the wheels would look bad. It looks great especially polished and with the color. Great job and great car.

My good friend and mechanic responsible for the engine build. He just got his 66 Charger back from paint. (I'll post a pic some time, Jerry did an awsome job on it as well) Frank was kind enough to put his car on on the back burner to get my motor finished up.

Boy that weight sure changed the stance. I'll adjust it to where I want it during alignment. Still lots of little things to do, but it feels good to clear this hurdle.

It's been slow going, but I finally got to take it for a short test drive. After three years you wonder if that day would ever come. Here are a few pics of it in the sun.

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 09/19/10 04:20 AM

The hood will go on shortly. I'll post some pics when that's done. If I can jump a few more hurdles by Friday I hope to take it to one of our local cruises.

It was interesting to here what people had to say. You redo the whole car and the thing that kept standing out to people were the wheels.

Re: 70 Road Runner resto - 09/29/10 04:34 AM

I took it to another fundraiser show on Saturday just to put some more miles on it. I probably went about 150 miles total. It really rides well, alot smoother than my cuda did. I knew there was a reason I wanted to go back to the B Body.

Here is the last one for the thread. I'm going to finish up a few little things and start enjoying the car. Thanks to everyone that made comments and all those on the board that have helped with answering questions. This thread has been a great way to chart my progress.

Thanks, Rob
