'68 Satellite build

'68 Satellite build - 01/06/09 07:47 AM

I picked up this 68 the day after thanksgiving. I drove from Chicago to North Carolina to pick it up. I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to finish the car, but I'm not going to rush it. I'll be taking my time and try to do as much of it myself as possible. That may or may not include paint. I'm not sure at this point.

Plans are to make it basically a Road Runner clone. Not exactly, but close. It will basically be a stock car, nothing special. mild 383/4 speed. Steel wheels. And I'm painting it back to the orginal Mist Green color.

Anyway...on to the pictures...

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/06/09 07:54 AM

Over the weekend, I had to swap some cars around and I brought my GTO to my storage garage and brought the 68 back home, and had to do some cleaning in the garage to get it to fit and have a decent work area. I still have a bit more dis assembly to do and then I can start stripping the paint.

Here is a picture of what I hope it will look like soon(borrowed from someone on this site)...

That will be a very nice looking car when you finish, good luck!

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/06/09 02:12 PM

Looks like a good project. Good luck with it.

The black primer reminds me of a RR/GTX/Sat I saw on Brice Road at the Nats a few years ago. That thing looked rough but the owner sure wasn't afraid to use it like it was meant to be used. The engine in that thing sounded great. I think he went through a set of tires that weekend!!!

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/06/09 06:10 PM

Good luck on the project. I have several projects like everyone else. Is your car a plain satellite? I also would like to know is it a factory 383 4 speed car? I have a 68 satellite (not a sport satellite) with a 383 2v and 727. My car had been sitting in a corn crib since 1975. I've not spoke of it on Moparts before. It's F5 green. I was going to clone mine and decided that would be an injustice to the car especially since I already have a restored Roadrunner. Sorry I didn't mean to hijack your thread I just have a growing fascination with satellites. Good luck with your build anyhow. Here's a old pic, it's in the middle

Boy, that green must have been a popular color in '68 for sport satellites. Here's mine that I'm turning into a roadrunner but not a stock roadrunner. It looks like you have a good basis to start with. Mine is very solid, just smashed up. I needed to get a whole front clip so going to roadrunner route was that much easier! This is what mine looks like about now...

Nice collection you've got there!

Mine was originally a 318/auto with a bench seat. Will have bucket seats and console and I found a 383 for a good price that comes with an automatic trans. I guess I'll be selling the trans and finding a 4 speed. Or I also came across an adapter to mate a T56 6 speed like I have in my GTO to a mopar big block. That would be nice, as I just plan to drive it.

Yours looks like a good start too.

I'd like to see how popular the color was, I've never seen it before I got mine, which is the main reason I want to keep it original. Well...and it looks good too!

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/12/09 02:50 AM

I almost have the car completely stripped. All that is left is everything underneath the car and I need to figure out how to get the 1/4 windows out. Anyone have any tips for me?

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/12/09 03:09 AM

I'm an E-body guy so I can't help you with the 1/4 windows but I can tell you this.

We all need to see some more pictures!!! The more pictures the better. Keep up the good work.

I would have done more today, but I need a 1 1/16 socket for my K member and also need to figure out how to get the 1/4 windows out.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/12/09 04:05 AM

Tomorrow the friendly Matco guy should be here and I can get some new toys. I bought a couple of sanders and the 1 1/16 socket. I'm also going to buy a Welder this week so I can make some brackets with casters to roll the body around without the suspension.

Looks pretty solid. How does the trunk floor look?

Not terrible. The trunk floor is good, just holes where the body caulk was. When I vacuumed out the trunk all the caulk was coming up and turns out it was rusted out under all of it.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/13/09 02:07 AM

Lookin' good. Taking them apart is always fun. I just have to strip paint and then I can't take anymore off it, and finally start putting parts back ON! I lucked out with the rust, I just had a few pin holes in my trunk floor from a leaking trunk seal but I replaced the whole floor. Keep up the good work and don't get discourraged. I've had mine for over 5 years now and it's still just a shell, but I keep plugging along on it when I have time and I pay cash for everything so it doesn't owe me anything, if it has to sit for a while, thats fine with me. It's mine, it's paid for and it's not going anywhere!

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/14/09 03:40 AM

Well no time to do work today, hopefully tomorrow. I need to pick up more propane.

But I did pick up some casters for the body dolly I'm going to build. Maybe the only perk I get from my job? I got these for free. 12" scaffold casters. I could have gone with 8", but I think the 12 will be easier if I need to load it on a trailer for any reason.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/15/09 04:03 AM

Still no progress, but I did make these brackets for the casters. Tomorrow I'll be drilling the holes and mounting them to the frame where the bumper bolts on.

I also got the socket I needed to remove the K member...so hopefully that will happen tomorrow too.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/16/09 04:13 AM

I know...boring. No real progress on the car. But the casters are done. I would have started on the suspension...but it's -13 outside right now BEFORE the wind chill so really it's about -36 right now I think.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/17/09 12:28 AM

Some forward progress. The front suspension is out.

And the rear end is out too.

Now all I need to do is take out the fuel line, gas tank, 1/4 windows and rear window and then off to sandblasting she goes.

Tomorrow should be the day for that.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/17/09 12:52 AM

all look like great projects! keep the pics comming. Love the green too. Think hard about keeping it a true Satellite. With al the clones, the real Belveders & Satellites are getting pretty rare. And they are great cars too.
The 1/4 windows are easy to take out. Check near the bottom of the glass. there are two bolts that hold the glass to the regulaters. Take them out, and the glass comes right out.You might need to take the galvanized panel out that is under the metal trim panel at the top of the inside, abouve the rear door panel.been a few years since I did one.
Thanks to all for sharing.

Re: '68 Satellite build - 01/18/09 02:23 AM

Looks good! I got some work done on mine today as well. Just little dub stuff that takes a lot of time and doesn't look like anything got done but needs to be done. I just finished getting the glue/insulation off from the floor boards and cleaned the heater box housing to get it ready to reassemble. Do you work on the car in that garage? If you do, good for you because it looks like you can't even walk around the car! Keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming

Haha, unfortunately, yes I do. It's a pain, but at least I have a garage now. This is the first time I've been able to use it in years because the roof was so bad when I moved here. Eventually I'll be knocking it down and building a bigger one.
