'68 Coronet 500 project

'68 Coronet 500 project - 08/30/14 06:33 PM

I bought the car in 2003 on ebay from a guy in southern FL. He said he had taken the car in trade from a guy named Darin in NJ. I bought the car sight unseen Once the car arrived, I was pleased to find it was as described. I drove the car for a couple of years and then started working on it as time and money allowed for about a year. Life and expenses of being a home owner took over and the car sat pretty much untouched until a year ago. I started sanding it down to metal (car had original paint). I am about 3/4 of the way done with sanding. If time and money allows, I hope to get it painted by spring. There hasn't been a logical progression in the work I have done. I have done things based on available time, money, and parts. I am hoping posting my project will get me motivated to finish the car. Unfortunately, I lost the original pics of the car in a fire. I will post some pics starting about 4 years after I got the car. I've replaced the leaf springs, shackles, shocks, bushings, brakes, and torsion bars. If you have never had a torsion bar snap, I am here to tell you, it is really loud and will scare you half to death.

Looking good Angie, nice work. Yes life has a way of getting in the way of the car hobby unless you are well off. Keep plugging away at it and if you need motivation check out my project to see what I have had to go through and still not done.

Part of the problem is I am a bit of a perfectionist and I don't have the money (or the skills) for it to be perfect so I get frustrated and walk away from it for months at a time. I'm trying to resolve myself to the fact that it will be a decent looking driver from 20' away at best.

Nope, you will have to be 20' away. Turning your head will probably make it look better.

I am sure it will be much better than that so put your frustrations aside and keep going. I get frustrated when the lack of funds stop the build or waiting forever for parts. I was wondering when you were going start posting in the projects section.

Everyone overlooks the "homely sister", but they don't know what they missing out on. The homely ones are the best.

looks like a great car the passenger fender didn't look too bad till the front shot. never saw one like that. Love the looks of the Coronets.

I've been putting it off because, quite frankly, I am a little embarrassed by my lack of skills. Especially after seeing some of the work that people like yourself are capable of. My Dad is an outstanding mechanic and I am confident in my mechanical ability because I learned from him. I have been learning as I go on the bodywork. My painting ability will be tested when I refresh the grille, dash, finish panel, and such items. The welding and body paint will have to be sourced out as I wouldn't even know where to begin and don't have the equipment or space to do those. But when he (yes, my car is a he)is finished, I will drive him proudly, even though he won't be perfect.

In the "real world" guys tend to be less critical of other guys who lack skills, but tear apart the women who lack the same skills. It has lessened in recent years as more women get involved in the hobby. Growing up I was often the only female at the car shows who wasn't there because their Dad, boyfriend, or husband dragged them there. I'm happy to say it has changed dramatically over the years. I have been quite surprised and pleased that I have not experienced the same criticism here that I did growing up in the car hobby.

Samy, you are young and I have no doubt that you will have a great deal more skill at 43 than I do. I have started reading your build thread and you are doing a great job. Keep up the great work and learn all you can.

I would never worry about lack of skills. This is the first car I ever laid a hand on in doing bodywork and paint. It didn't come out perfect and there was no one to teach me, I learned it as I went. Oh yeah it was a 1 of 99 Hemi GTX. Just jump in and do it. And screw anyone that criticizes (non productive criticism).
I also could care less about gender, colour or anything else, if a person is a car nut, I generally like them and don't see anything else.

Right now I am working on refinishing the finish panel and painting some steel wheels. Car was ordered with steel wheels and premium wheel covers. Will post pics when I am finished.

You're apparently one of the few. So, with the Core, the 440 won't make it into the 500?

The purple X is definitely a beautiful sight. In the top 3 most beautiful cars I have ever seen. I about had a stroke when a deer ran out in front of it. I'm shocked he didn't have to clean his shorts out after that.

I had the 440, 4 speed, and the 8 3/4 before I bought the 500. I already sold the 4 speed. I was looking for a rolling chassis when I ended up with the 500. It was numbers matching and ran and shifted well so I decided to just do a refresh and keep it pretty close to how it left the factory. Selling the "extras" I have would free up some funds for paint since the payments on the Core are a little higher than they were on the 2010 SE.

Don't worry about lack of skills. There is only one way to learn. Jump in! If you can get to where you can lay down primer smooth, its a start.

I had big plans for getting a lot done on the car this weekend, but it was so hot and humid that virtually nothing got done. I painted the finish panel, but I'm not happy with the way it turned out so I may redo it. I still need to get some red paint for the "500"

What paint did you use for the tail panel? SEM Trim Black? I sprayed my Challenger grill with it when it was really humid. The paint turned foggy and looked bad. Is that what yours did?

Part of what you see is my horrible camera and reflection. This is the second time I have painted it because I wasn't happy with it the first time I painted it a couple years ago. I used Duplicolor semi gloss. I painted it in the basement to try to cut down the impact from the high humidity. Not sure how to describe it. It doesn't look bad in the "valleys", but looks a little too much like a flat finish mostly near the "ribs". The finish doesn't look consistent across the panel. Poor coverage along the "ribs" maybe? Paint is too old?

Well, it looks like the project is once again on hold for a bit. Tore 3 disc in my back and since I am not supposed to bend, twist, or lift more than 10 pounds there isn't much I can do. Hopefully some of the restrictions will be lifted soon and I get can back to it.

I will try to get more pics taken soon. Been seeing the doctor twice a week for my back. He still isn't releasing me to lift anything or work on the car.

Ordered a new Spectra Premium fuel tank and straps. I bought a radio at Monster Mopars.

Was going to pull the car out today and see if I could do anything that wouldn't hurt my back, but quickly found out that it wasn't going to happen. Guess it is time to replace the bias ply on the back. I put radials on the front about 10 years ago. Yeah, it drove a little squirrelly, but I'm up for anything fun and challenging.

Was hoping to get some things done on the car this weekend, but it's supposed to be cold Saturday. So instead of being in the cold garage sanding the car and swapping the fuel tank, I will be in the basement painting the wheels, polishing trim pieces, and putting the new cover on the buddy seat.

Nope, but the car is stuck in the garage with a lack of funding to do anything right now. I need to win the lottery or find a sugar daddy. Neither of which is likely to happen.
