1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus, 90k (survivor) - 11/21/13 11:52 PM

Newest addition to my modest collection- The Plymouth is is an LA built Satellite Sebring Plus with 90k on the clock, California car with ZERO rust on it. With the car is a fat folder of documents dating back to 1971 including the emissions check form dated February of '71 and sales invoice for $4400 and change with tax and DMV fees dated July of '71

Here is a break down of the fender tag so far, I'll try and pull the back seat to look for a build sheet. I did feel up under the dash and didn't find one on the glove box.

Major needs for the car is a pair of front seat covers and the dash pad replaced (a NOS one was provided with the sale) it also has a slight skip which I'm not surprised considering the reciepts indicate the car has only accrued 5000 miles since 1989! I bet the plugs are all fouled out. Car looks to have original paint and still has original pinstripes, however the rear "Plymouth" badge is missing and I'm looking for one now. It was held on with double stick tape from the factory so I'm not surprised it has gone missing.

Fender tag as follows-

E61 383-2 Barrel
D32 H-D A-727 TorqueFlite Trans
RP23
L1E
GY8 Paint Code: Gold Poly or Gold Leaf Iridescent
P6Y3 Trim - Premium, Vinyl Bucket Seats, Gold
GY4 Upper Door Frame: Unknown At This Time
C03 Build Date: December 03 1970
204847 Order Number: 204847
V4W Roof Type OR Color: White Canopy Vinyl Roof
U Built to Specifications for USA Order
B51 Power Assisted Brakes
C16 Console w/ Buckets
C55 Bucket Seats
G33 Left Hand Outside Mirror - Manual / Chrome
N95 Nox Exhaust Emission Control
R11 Music Master Radio AM
V6W White Longitude Sports Stripe
M25 Wide Sill Molding
Y16 Sales Bank Car
26 26 in. Radiator
END End of Codes
H51 Single Air /w Heater
M21 Roof Drip Rail Moldings

Car has an 8.75" rear axle with sur-grip, have not checked the gears yet. When I have a free moment I'll post more pictures and scans of the documents.

Plan for the car is to not modify it at all, its a rare car as is and enjoy it.

Gary

Since we were on a tight timeframe and wanted to play it safe instead of using the box trailer or driving it brought out the tow dolly for one last hurrah. The 1700 mile trip went without a hitch and yes we pulled the driveshaft! Rolled down the interstates at 65-75 mph without the Hemi breaking a sweat.

Last shot for the night.. Reading around a bit one site claims around 10,700 Sebring PLUS (SSP) were made in 1971, I'll have to do a bit more research on that though.

Even though the car ended up in MI, I was told it has not seen snow in a few decades (if even then). Car is spotless and I have a DMV slip from California dated 1988. Between 1989 and 2013 the car only racked up 5000 miles.

What year was it? I have one sales receipt indicating that the last owner purchased the car some time in 2010. I have to finish going through the paperwork and do a timeline of the cars history when I get a spare moment. There are several dozen receipts along with the DMV and tax records and dealer sales invoice.

Well is does have 90,150 miles on the clock and the front drivers seat cover is worn out pretty good, someone drove the heck out of it at one point. It didn't see many miles after 88-89 for sure.

I'm going to try and get hold of the former owner (there is some contact information in the folder) and inquire on the cars history.

So this morning decided to do some fooling about in Photoshop to solve one problem ;-)

I found one picture on The Nest of an unmolested SSP trunk with a license plate. Knowing that a plate is 12" wide I resized the photo and laid a grid pattern over it. Presto!

Know I know the size of the Plymouth emblem and its exact location in respect to the trunk lip.

Yes. I'm told that some cars did not come with them, no rhyme or reason.

Looks like I need Plymouth emblem 3445250 which supersedes to one with three pins. I'm not about to make holes in the trunk, I wonder if the studs can be ground off without damaging the emblem.

Moving some stuff around the garage, getting ready to settle into winter mode (projects on deck to the front) for a bit and have to slide the truck in for a heater core tomorrow.

A few more cars and I'll have my very own Rapid Transit System =)

(There is a Dart and another Plymouth waiting in the wings...)

I digitized a bunch of stuff, I think there is even a long play version of the car on youtube.

For those wondering, here is the car running at E-town on street tires in 1989.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDsCtWEi4Uo

Whole day of racing here-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twqYbEfFoCA

You can see the 340 in the bay the very first minute of the video.

Fun car, its twin (minus the dents and urban camouflage) is being built even as we speak.

Re: 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus, 90k (survivor) - 12/07/14 04:32 PM

Never did get racing this year, life just keeps getting in the way.

Been working on making life a bit simpler by selling off my second '70 GTX and my beater Neon and purchasing a new Challenger.

The Sebring is in the work bay (going to be this winters project vehicle) for minor mechanical issues, just a good going over and the front seat covers and the dash pad. In the spring I'll decide if I want to downsize further and sell it or keep it.

I love the car but with so many things pulling at me.. there is only so many hours in the day and I still have a Dart and Reliant to attend to.

Started work on the car- Has a few oil leaks so were going to start there changing out the valve covers gaskets and the input seal on the power steering box. Also doing valve guide seals. all original!

My son who is 14 is doing some of the work as he has started in the automotive class at the local tech school.

Already had his first two mishaps! He found the starter positive terminal with a wrench and did a little welding and damaged a draw slide on his new tool chest when he lowered the lift. He left the draw open and the edge of the lift caught it on the way down.

Out $25 for new slides and no other damage, taught him a good lesson.

Pulled the front seats yesterday and stripped down the drivers, seat foam is mint under the cover!

Has some IBM card stitched into the covers with trim code and indication where to stitch, I'll try and take pictures tonight.

Carpets and floorpan look immaculate, no sign of a build sheet yet. Looked in the seat backs and rear seat bottom. Will try and look under the carpet tonight.

Slight mystery- On the passenger seat, outer, there was a large steel washer between the seat hinge and the seat bottom. On the drivers side, no washer at all. You can clearly see where the washer was on the passenger side with no imprint or marking on the drivers seat.

Re: 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus, 90k (survivor) - 01/12/15 02:18 AM

Seats are in, look very nice but the back seat is faded in comparison if you look close. I might do the rear seat as well but will defer till springtime once I get a good look at it in the sunlight. The fronts were REALLY faded, you could see the color difference under the seats trim pieces.

No build sheet in seats front or back nor did I find one under the carpet though I limited myself to looking under the carpet by pulling the scuff plates and lifting the carpet up. Could be on under the console but I doubt it. LA built cars are notorious for not having build sheets so I'm not surprised. I did find an odd clear plastic bag with a rubber band around it under the carpet though.

Dropped the steering column and after driving the coupler pin out pulled it back and changed the upper PS box seal. Was actually less trouble than I thought it would be.

Noticed the Parking brake handle was missing, one on order.

Have to dink around with the horn buttons, don't think they are working. Have the "pad" assembly in the house to get nice and warm before I start fiddling around with 40 year old plastic.

Car is running proper and sounds great!

Had a number of problems under the hood. Changed out the valve guide seals, VC grommets, water pump gaskets, one intake valve, valve springs, spark plugs and one plug wire. Starter was weak/slow so swapped out. New PS shaft seal.

Engine was painted wrong color (orange) which I painted back to Mopar blue. Still need to get right air cleaner, new plug wires and do a lot of scrubbing. Alternator spacers are wrong, correct ones on order.

Need to do fuel lines tonight as several are in tough shape.

Keep this nice thread going! One of my favorite chysler body styles. I had a really decent '72 satellite that was an old lady car and foolishly sold it to get a basket case '69 charger. Still wish I had that car:0 You are doing a great job on this one. Keep at it and you will have a really nice cruiser/survivor!

Road test!

Speedo cable howls and the timing is off a touch but the brakes and ride are smooth and the steering is tight. Nice and quiet tooling down the road. Time to address a few more issues before putting it away for the rest of winter.

Very cool tooling down the road with the AM radio playing, heat kicking and the 383 just burbling away.

Had yesterday off so had the chance to swap out plug wires and start working on the dash.

Edit- While doing the plug wires cleaned the block and verified it is the original motor, cool beans.

Need to-

Pull and test dash speaker, rear and fader control works fine.

Pull dash pad to replace with NOS unit.

Lube speedo and cable (noise on road test, might as well do both since cluster has to come out anyways)

What a PITA. Have the glovebox, ash tray base and dash top out. Speaker is unscrewed but can't reach plug without pulling cluster. Looks like cluster won't come out till column is dropped again.

I'll take some pics for reference in a few days, everything in the dash looks unmolested if slightly dusty.

Gah, now I know what the dash pad has not been done before.

What a Pain In The Butt.

Cluster is out as is dash pad. Hopefully tomorrow I will test the dash speaker to see if it is good or not and lube the speedo cable and speedo. I'll also get on the horn to Herbs and get the gold paint for the dash.

Now is time to change out the dash speaker if bad. Unbolting the speaker is easy enough but getting at the plug is almost impossible with the cluster in place.

Speaker is bad, open circuit.

No one makes a replacement, have to send it out to MI to get rebuilt.

You did it the harder way. It's easier to take the whole thing out and work on it on a bench or horses.

I considered it, but I wished to disturb as little as possible.

Done worse jobs, heater and evap cores on my Dodge Ram come to mind.

Just takes a bunch of patience.

I replaced my dash pad the same way you did...difficult to get that last bolt to the far left wasn't it!! ...Took a while for the skin to grow back too!!..

Was not to bad, I have a wide section of 1/4" extensions and was able to snake it right up there. Going back together might be a different story! I'm sure there will be lots of dum-dum on sockets and magnets deployed.

Slow going but getting there- Dash pad is back in, lubed the speedo head and cable, polished the gauge lenses and have the cluster back in place. One of the much difficult assemblies I have ever worked on! Lots of patience is called for.

Only thing left to do is get the heater controls and radio back in place along with the steering column.

All back together. Still need to swap out steering wheel and lube blower motor. Road test tomorrow!

Road test!

No more squeaking speedo, blower motor works good, radio sounds great. Time to take a break and move onto another project for awhile.

Re: 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus, 90k (survivor) - 04/25/15 01:00 PM

Many thanks to Kevin and James who helped me out with a few parts and information.

In the interior I still have to swap out the steering wheel and the car does need a little tuning work. The electronic distributor in the car has the wrong advance curve I think and the carb needs a touch of adjustment.

Still have to get the right air cleaner which I have not had time to pursue.

At least its turn-key now and everything is working as it should.

List of stuff that has been fixed-

Bad engine skip (1 plug, 1 wire, 1 valve)
Repainted engine correct color
Replaced power steering seal
New battery
New belts
New plug wires
New valve springs
Correct alternator spacers
Correct fuel line and replaced all rubber fuel hose
Replaced a few bulbs
NOS dash pad painted and installed
Replaced horn buttons
Re-skinned front seats
Front speaker sent out to be refurbished
Replaced missing parking brake handle
Lubed speedo cable and speedo head
Lubed blower motor (noisy)
Polished gauge lens
Adjusted shifter and took bow out of console plate
Repaired armrest on door
Repaired headliner

A friend wanted pictures of a few of the decals on the car for reference, here they are.

Mind you this is an LA built '71, might be in different locations on other plant vehicles.

Engine bay- Please note that there are a few things missing (ECS) and the car was converted to electronic sometime in its life. Use pictures with this in mind, clearly you can tell what is stock and what was tinkered with.

Re: 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus, 90k (survivor) - 08/01/15 06:38 PM

And the last two- James was kind enough to provide me with a trunk emblem which a few days ago scraped off all the old sticky and applied new 3M tape.

I was amazed when I got the car in the air and the trunk area was at eye level I could actually see in the paint an imprint of the original badge! It was clear as day as you looked up and down and the paint was slightly less faded in the shape of "plymouth" to boot.

Taking the steel rule out it was indeed 3.5" from the edge of the trunk to the bottom of the emblem as I discovered in Photoshop.

It looks crooked in the picture but isn't, I spent a lot of time making sure it was perfect and the emblem wasn't tweaked.

Thanks James!

Hi
Thank you for the pictures you posted. Unfortunately since the board change I can't open some of your earlier pictures.
I would imagine the V6W stripes are not being reproduced anywhere, would you be able to post some pictures with dimensions at some point?
Mostly ending points and stripe widths.
My car is in violet coded for those stripes.
Thanks

After turning over the matter for several months the SSP is going to be up for sale. I just don't have the time with several other vehicles on my plate (two of which have been sitting since 2004 and 2012 respectively)and space has been tight. A car just sitting in a corner is the kiss of death for me and I don't see myself driving this one anytime soon, especially after buying a Challenger R/T for a daily driver a few months ago and the fact I'm going to become very active in racing again.
