1970 Sunroof Charger R/T Go Wing Project

1970 Sunroof Charger R/T Go Wing Project - 02/11/13 04:23 AM

Well after hemming and hawing around for several weeks, I finally called the owner of the 70 Charger R/T listed on Ebay and inspected the car in person. Some of the photos appeared to have rust but from other angles it didn't. I was not prepared to buy over Ebay without seeing it in person and all it cost was 2.5 hours of my time plus gas. After inspecting it and seeing everything that goes with it, and verifying the fender tag, I bought it.

The car still has 100% of the original (unrestored - original EK2 paint) sheet metal, and although the proper resto would require replacing "some" of it, I've seen drivers on the road much worse than this one. The majority of the bad spots on this car are the front and rear floor pans and trunk pan. The dutchman panel under the back glass could use patching, but he included a brand new AMD panel. There is also a 3-4 inches of rust (bubbling rust) on the drivers side roof rail but it is nowhere close to rusting through. That's pretty much it.

He purchased (2) perfectly good (OEM metal) fenders, and perfect hood and deck lid as well as a front valance and rear tail panel.
The front fenders can be repaired, they are solid but banged up with surface rust on the top.
The hood is nearly perfect, but one of the hinge pads needs rust repair (he included a good one - but I think I'll use the original)
--> The original hood looks like it came with the rare hood pins (holes drilled in a square pattern) but they are long gone.
The deck lid is banged up a little but can be fixed with minimal repair (he included a good one)
The quarters can be repaired, but for a proper restoration I think I'll replace them.
The Sunroof is complete and in useable shape (some rust) including new seals and switches.
He included a complete interior in great shape, no rust and good padding. Just needs burnt orange covers, carpet, etc..

11/69 F-440 HP Block with 906 Heads, Good Steel Crank, with 6 Pack Rods, Intake, etc... 727 Auto with balanced TC, and Harmonic Balancer

It came with documentation and contact info from several of the previous owners.
It's originally a Tennessee Car I believe.
Fender Tag and Build Sheet.

Note: Ted Stephens (Stephens Mopar Performance) owned this car prior to the guy I bought it from and his name is on the previous title.

As I see it, the relatively rare "collectible" options on this car are:
EK2 paint with Burnt Orange Interior
Performance Hood Treatment 1.8%
Factory Sunroof 1.2%
RH side mirror .08%
Go Wing - Spoiler 2.1%
AM/FM Radio 10%

The (not-so) collectible options for an R/T are:

Air Conditioning
Cruise Control

Looks like an awesome project . EK2 Go Mango is probably the most impressive color you could ever hope for on a 70 Charger , and with the sunroof ....that car has the "wow factor".
It's posts like this that make me wish I had kept my FJ5 Sub Lime R/T SE dealer demo . It came out of the Florence AL area, and I believe it is now up north, possibly Michigan.

Yup, cool car. I was bidding on it also, but the guy never sent me a pic of the fender tag after I asked. I have a 70 500/SE sunroof project now. Love the 70 Chargers. Good luck with your cool car. Terry

Re: 1970 Sunroof Charger R/T Go Wing Project - 02/14/13 05:27 AM

My plan is to rebuild this car the way it rolled off the assembly line, with the exception of better than stock body and paint, front disc brakes and upgraded suspension. I think the color and options on this car were good enough and rare enough to bring back to life.

I've already documented and photographed this car thoroughly,
hopefully, I'll have it tore down this weekend and taken to be sandblasted this weekend and start on the metal work.

Wish me luck

Will be a looker. The EK2 is a great color. The sunroof will be especially cool. My own 70 maintains the stock look - even the 14 inch factory wheel covers. If you need any digital shots for reference, feel free to PM me.

Making some progress on the resto.
Metal work coming along slowly....
Had the car sandblasted / media blasted and replaced the floor and trunk pans. Hopefully laying down the DP90 tomorrow.

My understanding is that it was not an option but an after market or dealer add on. It was definitely added back in the day.

Re: 1970 Sunroof Charger R/T Go Wing Project - 02/08/14 12:34 AM

I'm having a big problem finding sun roof parts (or replacement sunroof assembly)

I've looked at EBay, Craigslist, Kijii, etc...
I have researched the original company that manufactured and installed them (ASC - still in business but no longer have information on parts)

I have looked for similar (70's era) cars that have power sunroofs (VW, Mopar, etc) and I get close but at the end of the day, it's either a manual sunroof car or it's already sold.

Several of the internal parts, tracks, aluminum guides, etc.. are either missing or corroded too bad to reuse and I'd prefer to take out the entire power sunroof assembly if possible.

The only other option that I can think of is to replace it with a modern sunroof assembly.

I'm open to ideas or suggestions....

Thanks in advance
Mike

Re: 1970 Sunroof Charger R/T Go Wing Project - 08/12/14 02:13 AM

The project is coming along slowly but surely. Had to wait in line for my Mopar paint and body expert to fit me in, but it's worth the wait.

We plan to put it on the rotisserie and cut in the bottom side and jambs, etc... with the EK2 paint this week and next, at which point I'll take it back to my shop and install the suspension, driveline, wiring, interior, vinyl top, glass, etc...

The grille is complete and might score a 7 out of 10 for condition, but definitely needs restored and painted. I'll start on that soon.

All metal work done, sealed the body the DP Epoxy primer, then primed with slick sand and guide coated.

Here are a few pics taken this week.

Yes, Through ingenuity and fabrication

I'll start testing it all in place soon then worrying about the fitment of the seals and vinyl top.

Thanks

Re: 1970 Sunroof Charger R/T Go Wing Project - 07/14/18 02:40 AM

Well the day has finally come where I can say it's almost done (haha).
Running, Driving, Assembled, and only missing a few small items that should be arriving in the mail next week.

I kept the original options and features it was built with when restoring the car.
The motor was built to be drivable and is only a little over stock with Edelbrock RPM 75cc heads, Holley 750 Carb, and Stock Exhaust Manifolds and Accurate Exhaust.

Maiden voyage went well, nothing caught on fire or fell off. It didn't overheat or break down. Starts east, idles great, shifts good, cooling system works great. A/C works good (gotta finish duct work), and Sunroof works great !

It's a pleasure to drive.

It has a small ping / diesel under heavy load (WOT) and I've adjusted the carb jets and backed off the timing a little and that fixed most of it. Probably need to back it off 2 more degrees (32).

Still working a hideaway headlight door relay problem, but the doors do open !

Getting close.
