1965 Plymouth Satellite

1965 Plymouth Satellite - 08/28/12 01:48 AM

Just started this with my father-in-law. The car was originally bought in 2007 by one of my older borthers. It came from up in the Saginaw, MI. area and had been in a barn for 10-15 years. Both the front floors were quite rotten, so he replaced those. The trunk floors are in remarkable shape, as is most of the car.
It came with a 383/auto setup but was originally a 3 on the tree car. Bucket seats, black interior, and a dark blue color originally as you can see from some of the pics.
So after about 3 months he quit working on the car and it sat until my father-in-law bought it last week. So now in our free time we're working on it.
Goal is paint by winter time and work on the rest over the winter slowly. It by no means will be a trailer queen. New paint, rebuilt engine/trans and just alot of cleaning up while trying to hold to a budget.lol.

Anyway heres a few pics.

Put the father in law to work with some paint stripper. The previous owner had said to just block and ready to paint. Roll on rust-oleum...sure...

I had to do some minor steel work on the front fenders thus far. Passenger fender was a little rough around the edges but still came out nice.

Plan for the hood is a MW scoop.

As you can see went with a red/maroon color. I originally was going to paint it a new Ford Red Kandy color, but being a tri-coat the price per quart was just over $300, that didnt fit the budget.
I went through a good amount of chips and came out with this color-good pearl kinda dark but really comes out in the sun.
I just sprayed the inner fenders today just to get an idea of whether we like the color or not? Input is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't imagine this was where you were going, but that color just screams gasser.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite - 09/07/12 12:20 AM

Well spent some more time on the car. All the glass was removed from the car today. Stripped a little on the right rear quarter and replaced a section behind the right rear wheel. Came out quite nice.

Both rockers are real solid but have some dents so those will have to be pulled and fixed. As you can seen the c-pillar on both sides is kinda rough. The car overall still surprises me, trunk and floor is real nice.

Its going to the media blaster on monday so everything will be finally fully stripped. I am going to make a set of frame connectors for it and strut towers braces and do those while its in bare metal as well.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite - 09/17/12 12:55 AM

Got a little more done over the weekend. Fruday we stripped the major panels, then blasted jamb areas, trunk, engine bay and some underneath as well.

Today I welded up several holes in the engine bay from old add on stuff. Mixed up and sprayed a couple coats of epoxy and high build.

Starting on some of the engine stuff as well. Dropping the 516 heads off tomorrow and going to have a valve job done and new bigger valves installed. It'll retain stock crank/rods looking at probably a .48ish cam to use with the TM6 we already have. Nothing crazy but should run good.

Little update.
Cars getting closer. Ive had the last several days of so spent all of sunday getting the roof back to straight and saturday straightening the rockers out.
It is now entirely in 3 coats of primer. A couple small areas to touch up but minor stuff, then final block sand.

I did paint the trunk area, jambs, and engine bay over the last two days. Coming out pretty good for "driveway paint" to this point.haha
Goal is to put the final color on at the end of the month.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite - 10/12/12 12:26 AM

Thanks.

Just spent the day fixing little nicks, and blocksanding. Just about finished with the top of the hood.
The scoop is a fiberglass piece from Sled City, great quality, and the hood is factory steel with the already seen hole. Coming out pretty good.
I keep debating on whether to undercoat the inner wheel wells in the front like factory, or just leave as is. I sure like seeing the color.lol I am undercoating the inside of the fender though just to help with rock protection.

A little dusty already.

Nice work, and I love the mid 60's b bodies rear window pillars.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite - 10/18/12 12:08 AM

Couple more pics..

Shot the trunk today and will try to do the undercoating over the weekend on it for a little black contrast.

Also painted the cop car wheels we are thinking of trying on it. The car has magnums on it now, but one is really rough and will need completely redone and the others are ok, but not overly impressive.

I am going to paint the car next weekend so I'll be able to look at both and see what looks the best. Im thinking some 275's on the back and maybe a 205 or 215 on the front.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite - 10/23/12 12:07 AM

Getting closer.
We have a little more time taping stuff off. Body work is all done and sanding with the exception of two small areas to touch up tomorrow. I rented a booth for a weekend, heated and everything for $100, same booth I painted my cuda in 3-4 years ago.

Saturday should be a fun day.

Painted the cop wheels, so I just had to put the old Super stock bias plys back on. Dont know if we'll keep em, but they are just cool. No dry rot or cracks, but man they have to be old.

Shot the inner sides of the trunk with a couple coats of undercoating. The contrast came out nice. It'll get a std factory mat at some point and a batter in the trunk.

Close to how it sat today. Mid taping process. Wheels on in the back. 14" Magnums up fornt that will be changed to 15" police wheels as well.

Thanks for the replies.

Finally Paint - 10/29/12 07:12 PM

Took about 6 hrs Saturday between sealer, three coats of base and three coats of clear. Came out really nice. Will probably wait to wet sand/buff until spring as there is alot of re-assembly to go.

Also welded in frame connectors. 2x3 and cut to fit the top section to fit the floor board. Tucks up nice and came out great.
