1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 08/12/12 04:50 PM

Many know I traded my last project car for a running project car. My '69 Coronet R/T for a Top Banana 340/4-speed/3.91 Dart Swinger.
As mentioned, it is running, driving, stopping, and for the most part complete. There are a few appearance, and functional items as well as some performance changes and upgrades I would like to make. Haven't figured out the order of the list yet, but I can hit some of the basics and lay out the list for you and document what I have done and how. Never really started a thread like this because, well, I do a crappy job of taking pictures or documenting anything. Maybe this will help.
The list(front to back and as I remember things.):
Bumper(s). I had a '70 Dart before that was all primer black including the bumpers. Like the look. The bumpers on this one are very nice, so I'm still up in the air on whether or not I want to do body colored 'glass bumpers or leave 'em chrome.
Left inner fender. Right at the core support had a rust hole directly under the battery tray. Not uncommon, but also not terrible. Other than that the inner fenders are very nice.
Front suspension. Lots of dry rotted/cracked bushings and boots. Not going exotic, probably poly uppers, rubber lowers, and probably put the stock sway bar back. New torsion bars, tie rod ends, adjusters, strut rods, (maybe lighter) etc.
Engine bay. Looks decent. Would like to move the MSD box to somewhere other than the drivers side inner fender. Maybe a new engine/light harness, and clean up all the extra wiring for the MSD. Lots of crimp connections.
Engine. First I want to find out what is in it. Would like to add a little bigger cam, ceramic tti headers, paint the thing up a little nicer, replace the abused oil pan(or at least beat it back out), put a set of RHS iron heads on it. Port the intake to the heads, etc. Not gonna mess with the bottom end if I don't have to. All the stroker stuff will be put on my GTS. New bellhousing, the starter locating hole in mine is broken out, different clutch kit and flywheel. Starter is handled as of this weekend.
Exhaust. Tti 2.5" all the way back with tips. The one on it now may be original, but the connections to the headers are not done well, and they leak.
Transmission. Probably nothing. Speedo pinion leaks, so I need to get a new o-ring for it. Also need the right pinion to make the speedo closer.
Windshield. Needs replaced. Has large stone chip and lots of scratches.
Dash. Cluster, trim, all could use a restoration. Plans are to pull it when the windshield comes out. Restore it, then put it all back in together.
Pedal assembly. Squeak like mad. Pull when dash is out.
Carpet, seats, headliner, etc. Plan is to do the interior with the dash, or shortly after. I have the original seat belts and radio to go back in, want to mount a disk player with mp3 input in the glove box.
Doors. They both have some issues. Drivers side needs adjusted, wing vent doesn't touch the roof at the top, and nether does the rest of the window. Window isn't secured to the front of the track on the drivers side, ether. Opens and closes fine, but obviously needs adjusted. Locks don't work properly in either door, and key won't go in passenger side very far.
Out of order, but wheels and tires. I like the car with Rallys on it. Would like to add 15's in small bolt all around, with a taller tire in the rear and a little taller in the front. The lug nuts all need replaced, they look terrible. Haven't checked, but drivers side to be converted to right hand thread if it hasn't been done already.
Front to back, brake and fuel lines replaced with stainless.
Fuel level sending unit. Doesn't always work. The tank doesn't seem to leak, but it may get replaced while it is out.
Rear end. 3.91's are supposed to be new. So after checking it out, probably just replace seals and go through the rear brakes/hardware.
Go wing. I like it. I want to add one, I'm getting opposition from the kids/friends.
Shifter/handle. It had a '71-'72(I think) b-body pistol grip in it. It's okay, but I really would like to put a ball shifter in it, and also I think the box itself needs rebuilt/replaced.
Body. Will be tackled probably after I get another car on the road. There are some small spots in the passenger floor that need fixed. Trunk floor looks good. Bubbling over rear quarters, in front and back, and a spot in the drivers door that is bubbled. Also on the deck lid.
That's all I can think of. I'm going to tackle this project in a way that when I go to replace something, I have everything I need for the job waiting in front of me. No taking it apart and waiting, while not driving it, for parts to come in. Things like the dash will be done over the winter, so I have the time to do it.
Lastly, as much of the work as I can do, I will be doing myself. Brakes, suspension, engines, transmissions, wiring, and adjustments I can handle myself. Body, interior, trim, dash cluster, I have never tackled. May send the cluster out. May not. We shall see.
So follow along and please, please, PLEASE feel free to correct me, guide me, and help my along the way if you see anything that I could do differently.

Lol. Well, sometimes when I post from my phone they don't show up. Will try to keep all the photographic evidence on my laptop instead of my phone!

Well about time someone started a 70 Swinger project thread
Ran a search here and found only 67-69 darts, demons, dusters etc
I will be following you as I myself has an ongoing 70 Swinger project >340, 4sp, 3.91 plum crazy, white vinyl top #'s match

Only it will be hard to keep driving yours and trying to get it done
One thing leads to another and before you know it you keep taking it apart Good Luck
I owned mine since 1978 now its apart in a garage and boxes
LONG story (sadly no pics when it was on the road)
Only the back glass and headliner left
I now want it done in less than 2 years
I plan on starting a thread on here soon also
Did you find your broadcast sheet??
My build date was 6-23-70 LM23HOR320###
If you have any Q? 's email/pm me
good luck

Re: 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 08/14/12 08:26 AM

I haven't found/looked for the broadcast sheet yet.
The plus for keeping it together enough to drive it is the fact that I worked on the car I traded it for for 12 years and never drove it.
I will keep this one on the road. I don't want an over the top resto, so I will just do what I can when I can. If I don't have the parts to do the whole job(barring things that I need to send the core in for), I won't take it apart.
I missed out on a lot of fun IN a car for a long time, and I am loving this one.
I will be starting some of the small stuff tomorrow, will try to light off the thread tomorrow evening. Won't be exciting, but it will keep me moving.

Oh, and I have s '69 GTS that will get started in the next year, too.
So I won't be having two cars apart at once! Well, not two including the Swinger!

Nice car. I really like the 70 Dart 340 Swingers. Here is my sons 72 we cloned like a 70 Dart Swinger but it has a 400 in it and runs 11.40's. Ron

Like that car, Ron. Of course it seems anything you have(or had, wasn't it yours first?) is cool. Are the wheel wells stock, and how much rubber did he fit in there?

Re: 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 08/14/12 11:39 PM

Clutch is adjusted. Sorry, no pics. But progress. Also found the pedal 'squeak'. The linkage to the z-bar is bent, it's rubbing the body, burned through the boot. So, new boot, new rod on the parts list.
Progress...
Now on to the 1/4 window chrome.

I think for a non-tubbed A-body, the largest tire you can fit under there with 0 modifications would be like a 265/50/15 (maybe a 55 with a little rubbing on height). I have a buddy with a 71 Demon and he has 245/60/15 (barely taller than the 265/55/15) and they occasionally rub on larger bumps.

Biggest tire that doesn't rub is a 245/60/15 on a 15x7.

Cool. Thanks. I actually talked to the guy I got it from and he has a couple 15" small bolt wheels. Go figure. $200 doesn't seem too bad. But there may be a reason he didn't put them on...

The wheelwells are all stock as is the rear spring location. He has Hoosier QTP tires that are 27 x 9.5 I believe. It hooks good on them. Here he is at the track. The tires in the other pic were on the car until he bought the Hoosier's. They were 245/60-15's.
Oh and thanks for the kind words. Ron

Here is another pic with G/60-15 McCreary's on the back and they hooked good also. Ron

Here are some pics of the 'to do' list.

Apparently they liked Edelbrock stuff.

Would like to unload all the Edelbrock stuff and go to the black wrinkle Mopar covers/air cleaner.

Excuse the crappy cell pics. My camera has been MIA for a while now.
Some peripherals. It was set up as a race car when the P.O. got it. He took the automatic, fuel cell out and put in a correct tank and a 4-speed that needs much adjustment.

Can't find that part number, but looks like a single plane to me.

Someone put some money into the ignition.

Wiring is in need of some repair. Or at least a little cleanup so I can feel a little better about the connections.

Re: 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 08/27/12 11:26 PM

Interior to clean up and 'organize'.

Trying to decide if I want to change out the piston grip for the other shifter.

Re: 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 08/28/12 01:13 AM

Ahhh. Progress. I somehow pulled some wires loose killing the tach, water temp gauge and the lights to both Friday of the Nats. Got them re-connected to the fuse bock on an extra accessory spade on the fuse block. Will have to go through them later when I have more time and remove the 'light' wires from the connections and move them to a source that is only on when the lights are. They are all connected right now.

Re: 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 09/03/12 03:34 PM

No progress this week. A little regress, however. Put the car away Saturday, everything was cool. Moved it Sunday and I had very little brake pedal. Small puddle of brake fluid on the floor. Popped open the master cylinder and the rear(front) reservoir was empty. Guess I need a hose or a line or hopefully not, a caliber.
Will keep posting.

Thats a really nice Dart!! Keep up with the updates. Remember some progress is better than none. I love 70 Swinger 340's so I'll be watching this thread. Keep up the good work!

Thanks. I try to do a little bit to it each week. That way even little stuff adds up to big stuff. Next weeks project is finding and fixing my new brake leak.
Not going to the level you are, but man, your car is turning out SUUUUWEEEEET!

Possible. Idk if I put it in here anywhere, but the rear reservoir(for the fronts) is empty. Nothing from the front section. I will get it up in the air tomorrow to diagnose. Master cylinder looks ugly, anyway.

The Swinger left today, headed for Connecticut. I will post on the new ride once I secure it and get it home.
Seems every time I start to talk about something I might get, it always falls through. So for once, I will keep quiet until the deed is done...
