Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T The newest addition..... - 04/05/12 05:30 AM

TEASER....anyone up? EDIT until it's painted I'll call it "Tina" as in patina. Or maybe Da-R/T. I was tipped to this car many years ago by a friend. It's been parked since the early 90's I believe. I kept in touch with the original owners and the wife had expressed that she would want me to have it. I'll spare the details, but this is more of an adoption then a simple sale. I wish to be very respectful to the owners especially as to the condition of this car. Thank you Tom and Sue. Tom bought this car a month before his wedding and took it on his honey moon. I hope to post a pic of that someday

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/05/12 02:33 PM

I knew it!!! I love that Dart! I'm glad to see you finally go it. How many years did it take? How many miles does it have & how long has it sat? You realize you may have to go the almost stock resto on that one, as it would be easy considering how unmolested it is. When are you going to clean it up and get it running? That is awesome, I'm excited for you!

Brent I knew you knew, strange connection we seem to have. Thanks man. They seem to think I've been after it about 15 years. It's sat since maybe 93 with 117K I think. I'm in no rush but you know I'm going to clean it and make it run real soon.

Thanks Macho, I am hence the name "Tina" ...just a neat thought though

A New Mexico car that has a SPD of 505 (NM area code) and that means it may have been built on Cinco De Mayo. Bizarre!

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/05/12 09:41 PM

Wow! Great car! Clean it up and just drive Tina until the wheels fall off I'm going to do the same with mine this spring/summer. Here is my recently aquired Swinger

My Darts SPD is 5-13 and it had two matching broadcast sheets, one under the rear seat bottom and the other was under the carpet.

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/05/12 09:46 PM

For Brent and Scott I'd like tips for cleaning without disrupting inpections marks etc.

Scott this car is not too pristine but may offer some info so if you want pics/info please let me know.

I have asked for old pics, I think I may be getting a wedding pic "the car was a mess" this should be cool. Also will see if he has old documentation, sales, window sticker, repairs etc

70440+6bbl I will be looking for mine soon, if anyone needs anything let me know. I'll be learning more about these cars. I was always an A-body guy

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/05/12 11:49 PM

More pics please!!

Regular dawn dish washing soap, a soft/med bristle brush, and fine steel are a really good start. Also knowing where to look for inspection marks helps too. If you find a broadcast sheet in the seat take some good pictures first since it will probably be brittle from the heat. Evaporust work great to remove rust and bring out inspection marks, but they will usually wash off when rinsing. Buy the biggest memory card you get for your camera and keep it just for the Dart.

BTW, I have a complete 68 Dart dash and you're welcome to anything on it (gauges, switches, etc) free of charge.

79 Lil Red...not for me

Ahhh the memories.. Man did I want that car once I saw it was a stick. In fact I made sure I went by to ask one last time before I moved.

Heres why I wanted that car. I bought this from the original owners and had a blast in it. I probably would have kept it had it been a stick. They had the white stripe removed and the side molding installed.

Congratulations, again, on getting ahold of that one.

Hopefully I'll be back to visit in the near future.

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 09:09 AM

Thanks All

Brent, so as I said our strange connection of coincidences continues. You live in Vegas now and I am in ABQ. I lived there almost 7 years. You had the orange 72 Duster, and a green 69 340 swinger too and I have a feeling the further we go the more we'll see.
Folks he and I did not realize the connection or that we had ever even met as we have been following the builds of each others current projects but Brent is actually the guy who started the chain reaction which became my Cuda purchase. I can not thank you enough for telling me about that 340.....
He live in ABQ and I was living elsewhere (military) at the time. I was looking for Mopar parts when I met him. He had sold an engine to his roomate that I was coming to town to get. That deal fell through so being bored and having a pocket full of cash I went to merely look at a relatives Cuda. Brent even came by and helped me bleed the brakes in prep for flat towing.
It was1:30am and i am up from a dead sleepand my first thought.....just a few screws stand between me and whats beneath that carpet....

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 09:11 AM

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 09:25 AM

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 09:32 AM

I found a base decal that expired in 93, the plate is a 1972 NM plate and the sticker is too tough to read. I found this in the car

Some folks caught that I hinted about another car. If the weather is good a real jaw dropper will be parked in the Rams stall, does not mean it's mine. Everyones favorite Mopar in the rarest of hues.... maybe even tonight When I'm not posting I am busy doing something somewhere

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 12:58 PM

I moved some items in the back seat and the seat buldged out like someone had pulled the top back looking for the sheet. Guess it needs some work. So I look down and theres a nice build sheet in there....careful removal of the seat and lots of pre-photos to follow. Maybe I can remove the foam....

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 05:13 PM

That is one clean car! Fingers are crossed that the sheet matches

I believe that all the four speed cars came standard with black carpet, regardless of the interior color. Your car looks to confirm that.
Posted By: UCUDANT

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 05:27 PM

It has the torque boxes too. My E body 4spd Cuda doesn't
Funny I thought the same thing, hope it's the right sheet. I'm going to search the whole car for sheets.

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 06:22 PM

Mine has them as well, front and rear. I wonder if the automatic cars had them? The E-bodies only had them when U,V and R-codes were ordered (of course all ragtops as well).
Posted By: UCUDANT

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/06/12 09:03 PM

I was told 4spd cars had them? My Cuda is 4spd.
Dart has all 4
Posted By: 70440+6bbl

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/07/12 02:38 AM

That only works with small block A-bodies. No more E-body torque boxes after 1971. Even in '70-1, 340 and 383 cars (4-spd or auto) didn't come with them. They were reserved for 440 4bbl, 440 6bbl and 426 hemis only.

I wouldn't laminate your broadcast sheet. Put it in an acid free sheet protector.
Posted By: UCUDANT

Re: The newest addition..... - 04/07/12 08:24 AM

It never would have made it, far to brittle. I have a great scan prior to lamination and when I unearth another sheet it will stay natural

I laminated a pic of my oldest nearly 20 years ago (she will be 21) so I could protect it during military times abroad and it still looks new

To borrow from MCG... How cool is that!

The PO of my Swinger did the same with the sheets, he laminated one copy and left the other plain.

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/07/12 03:52 PM

This car had all kinds of cool stuff.
Lunch box, original hoses, a single head gasket, chevy gaskets, several volatage regulators, enough copper to recycle and buy some paint LOL.

Hoping to find the next sheet, hoping in the 4spd hump. I have a snap on inspection camera (bore scope) and did a little recon with it.

Where does one get the acid free sheets?

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/07/12 05:16 PM

acid free sheet paper at any picture framing business or try art supply store.

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/07/12 05:30 PM

Staples or office depot have sheet protectors. I bought a box of them. Art store might have singles.

I've had some REALLY brittle ones, just have to be careful when you load them into the protector.

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/07/12 07:23 PM

I'll check on that. Scott Smith schooled me I tried to call him prior to that but he was with otherwise occupied, so I just did it

This little time capsule is a trip

Busy morning, I was up in the middle of the night for my trunk expedition, because over 20 years you can misplace some keys

At 9 I called to tow the "Short Bus" while I'm in route ahead of the truck my MIL calls

There's a woman who see's my car at my FIL's occasionally and she bugs my FIL for my car allot. Well I loaded and moved the blue car while I had the car trailer here but I left it on the trailer at my FIL's. So guess whose there when I show up? I only wanted it because it had AC. It might be gone..... So in 2hrs I left, got to the WHALE, got it towed' then got it in the yard and maybe sold a car making money and room too bad it's not worth what the Swinger is ...even out

As he pulls up I get a call from the Goat he was supposed to come by today too. Turns out my old friend worked with Goats wife once in another state. BEAT THAT We went and drank beer at the Goats, yeah he'll be up late fixing the car he was on LOL

Scott please let me know what to be looking for and documenting

This appears to be the rear marker lens that I found in the car. Both appear to sort of be amber.

Note:
The top installed unit only has 2 reflector panels. And it's font is tward it's upper edge, it's much lighter in color

The one I am holding has 4 reflector panels, and is shorter, and a good fit for the rear of the car. It's font is tward it's bottom edge and it's much darker

The cars SPD is 505 cinco DeMayo. I see in Troy's post that they changed during production so hope this helps

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/10/12 07:47 AM

Car apears to have been off the road since 77, and when asked Tom said that sounded about right. It also does have 117K according to Tom, and the numerous maps are a hint as to why. The front bumper does have decals from much later, I suspect he changed the bumper while maintaing it more recently.

Yes thats a partial build sheet. It has tape across the top so I suspect it may have had a heater core

The tiny pink slip above that is a registration and it shows the origianl plate, swapped to a new style in 72, which it still wears today.

Yes Sir and 17 mpg? Wait a minute....brainstorm, that half of the build sheet could have been taped to the lower end of the glove box and if the tape came loose and it hung down I bet..... screwdriver in 5...4....3....

EDIT I suspect one of the light : bulbs could be a non OEM

the glove box's bottom was blasted and this made removal a little easier.

Funny almost reads like this car built on the DL for Tom ? Anyone know what the markings refer to?

Hoping for another sheet under the carpet

GOLDMYN
I'll simplify it. I have been stopping by their home for many years. It was off the road since the late eighties. Sue had told me several years ago that she wanted me to have the car, when Tom was ready. I always told her please don't pressure him. I'll skip to me emailing Sue a pic of the Cuda, and shortly after I got a call.

70440+6bbl I'll be looking for a set of those hubcaps down the road and the white walls will be facing out when I redo the rims ....

Brent, poor installation of the factory butt stripe? It was Cinco DeMayo? So in 69 so that was probably single ply too, my luck

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/23/12 01:59 AM

Well hell, I was going to work on the Cuda but the Computer for the B1500 came Saturday, then I pulled the window regulator.....
Today I decided to clean the garage so out came all of the Mopars to include the Dart, so while it's out I clean some debree from the engine compartment. Then decided to fix the mouse chewed balast resistor wires (the reason the owner had coils, voltage regulators and ignition guides in the trunk).
Then I went for a Battery, pulled the ignition switch and bypassed the tumblers since the owners had lost the key and the switch is not available locally. Swapped two plug wires the mouse had eaten. I had alreday determined the motor wasn't locked up. I spun the engine via the starter and fuel filled the filter immediately....hmmmm.
I simply went to see if it had spark figured the points might be an issue and what do ya think happened?

Yeah, I may be a bit out of my league on this one. Theres very little that has been changed. The exhaust is in nice enough shape to detail the bends, and many flat spots. The under body shows the wheel well undercoating patterns, paint drips and primer well too. The rear dif still shows it's pencil markings. I thinks there's a V-belt under the drivers seat. Original V-belt?

Well you can see where this is headed..... radio is already on the rock station. I'm going to drop the oil(excuse the fram filter just an interm clean up cheapy) and swap a few fuel system and ignition items to see how well it will run. Just run of the mill parts house stuff for now. I have not restarted it since I drove it (just the length of my adjoining cul-de-sac) for it's SPD 505 "Birthday"

I've got a few hrs, today is the memorial for a Buddies son who lost his life in Afghanistan. Say a prayer for the family

Have some fun when you get her on the road! Here is a shaky in car picture of my barn find '69 340 4-spd Swinger on its first run since '73, the speedo wasn't hooked up yet, but with the factory 3.91, it screams

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 09/15/12 06:36 PM

I agree yeah 3.91's are allot of fun especially with a 4speed. How is your Dart? I do want to compare notes with you since our build dates are just a few days apart, thats cool.

Heres a video, I think the water pump is the noise I previously thought to be the throw out bearing. The alternator belt is also heard briefly. No worries I manually cleaned around the plug bases and blew the areas clean as I replaced the plugs.

ALSO NOTE: That the passanger side shock tower area cleanned up pretty nice

So I'm looking at the title and it's actually from 71. It states previous title was from Ohio as the plate in the pictures of it new reflect. Dang he titled it in Ohio from here as a GI. His memory was off.
It was a tiny yellow title but if I had read it closer it's there. So do I go ahead with a lost title and transfer to keep this one or not?

Lately I'm not sure that I want to keep this car. I haven't done anything to it and just wanted to settle on a plan over time but nothings really sounded good.
If I do keep it I feel pressure to leave it as it is with the exception of detailing and replacing the wasted interior componants and windshield. Opinions/ideas?

Put some carpet & seat covers in it and drive it. I'm gonna guess that the delapidated/ patina'd exterior condition of the Dart is what got you interested in the car in the first place. I think to get the answer you're looking for you just need to drive it around and have some fun with it.

Brent, nah it was when I heard the car would be in print. I plan to start on a few things real soon. The front seat will be first. It drives but needs an accelerator pump, and the brakes need to be rebled. Its marked its territory twice when I released the clutch too fast (rpm/accelerator pump compensation).

Thanks guys. Here is a pic of an original air cleaner decal and wrinkle finish. The finish appears different than some I have seen.

Is the smooth border around the decal normal, as if the factory had taped off a spot to remain smooth for application of the decal? Or was the decal replaced?

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 01/28/13 03:15 AM

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/07/13 04:18 PM

So I thought I'd update you all on my life and the car. When I was building the Cuda it was the yard, patio, etc that got my attention sweat and cash.

Well my Mom has had health issues, so my brother and I have both been out there to assist her, and will be moving her from Vegas to WA next week(don't be suprised if ya hear from me Scott)

We had a minor water leak but unforetuneately no one was home all day. We went through insurance to ensure we would not end up with mold....so I sat on my car cash for the last 3 months....

I just put tires on the Ram this week

My Oldest was home from school, she is so responsible and money conscious. She hates to ask or use Mom and Dads money. I know she was strapped so I peeled off some car cash.

So now I'll slowly be getting back to the car.

Here are the grease seals I replaced (long ago) They appear to have chrysler P/N's so judging by the start of the number are they the factory installed seals?

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/07/13 04:25 PM

The car had been sitting forever and I had only bled the brakes solo. I went to rebleed them about 2 weeks ago and one of the bleeder screws stripped real easy (It will be retained and fixed) so I replaced the front wheel cylinders with some aftermarket units. Here are pics of the Wheel cylinder boots, not exciting but some mopar guys might be able to use this info .... these were on the passenger side cylinder. Note the difference in the pentastar etc.

Ok lifes hopefully about to get back to normal.

I used most of the car money I managed to save tward my middle daughters car (bought shortly before I left)

I almost made it by to see Brent and his amazing Duster, but it was getting pretty late so I had to pass.

Scott was a few hrs away so that had to wait as well.

A long time friend does carbs as his side gig, I asked where to pick up my rebuild kit...... this was the end result of that conversation. Thanks Brian. It was even run on his test engine and it had crisp response.

Today I want to check the fuel tank. Run some thinner thru the fuel lines to clean them. I'll need to find a coolant leak too.

Cinco Demayo (the cars SPD) is coming and I want it driveable

And for Tom, there should be video for you soon

Things I will be after

1- Headliner in buckskin
2- AMD windshield
3- Windshield gasket if needed
4- Tie rod/balljoint boots to fit OEM
5- Mufflers
6- ABnE Dash pad
7- Legendary seat skins

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd DaR/T - 04/29/13 02:07 AM

I spent the day cleaning the upper half of the engine. Steam cleaning may have removed allot of the hardened grime but I am sure it would have taken allot of paint with it so I elected to do things the hard way. Thanks to my old military buddy George for coming by to lend a hand.

Interesting side note back in 87 when I met George he ribbed me about the old Mopar. My response would be I'd look him up in 20 years to compare it to his ride at the time.... and show it to him as my car would still be going. Well that Duster is still going and just 15 minutes from my current place.... and now George has kind of caught the Mopar bug from seeing my cars, he even grabbed the Mopar Muscle issue with my Dart in it.

Here is a sample of the grime

Hey Brent thanks. I just saw your post. I'm glad your out enjoying your car. I took the Cuda out a few times this weekend, and George has been absorbing all things mopar lately.

I have started planning and over the next few weeks things will slowly start to change. Headliners on the way. It won't be the exact factory color. Neither choice offered, is factory per Dante

I fired up the Dart and had to set the timing. The entire downstairs smelt like the car had sat in the kitchen running

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 05/27/13 04:54 PM

The AMX saga generated quite a bit of Dart Money.

As I sell off the parts and the Car money is accumulating I am thinking about my wonderful wife.
She funded the paint job of the Cuda, after my many years of military service and sacrificing for the families needs.
She also helped me score the Dart and we never even really discused me dragging it it home, the entire conversation was "Whats that going to cost?" "I dunno yet" then she even surrended her her R/T's garage stall because the neighborhood Nazi's would complain if it were outside. So I think she'll get the lions share of the cash....

The buckskin headliner from Dante arrived. Here it is compared to the original.

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 06/14/13 03:48 PM

I need to make sure the parts stores nearest to my place have a timing cover set. I know I have at least 3 partial gasket kits
I have to mail 2 AMX shipments
Then I need to get the Dart running
I promised George he could drive the Dart to the show tomorrow. He wasn't due back until Sunday, but he's driving back to make the show. I'm a man of my word. The cars are going. The Dirty Darts first show....and I don't do car shows.

So I let George drive the `Cuda. After he drove several states to make it back a day early to pilot the Dart to todays show I had to make it right

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 06/30/13 12:59 AM

The Dart has it's own Elephant (it was there when you were busy doing burnouts), Lauren removed the original from the `Cuda one night years ago, and that was an expensive night of racing. Now all the Mopars get one

I'm currently doing a little surgery on the drivers seat back seat springs. I've gutted a donor. The 3 center springs were broken, in the pic two replacements are just laying there. I'm going to use the 2 donor outboard springs and remove the extra support they have. Since those will be less likely to break later

The dash pad is a nice piece overall, color looks good, the grain is different from the original. I've trimmed some excess vinyl from the underside lower corners but it still needs something more to get it to sit tighter.... it seems as if at least one stud is too short to use the factory style speed nut

Legendary seat skins are AWESOME

Chryslers designers must have been color blind, there are multiple shades of tan and brown throughout this interior

Nice progress Wow there is a color difference but it looks like it will all blend when its together. A friend of mine just sent in his dash pad to Just Dashes and their prices have gone up. Restored E body is now $1200. Keep us posted with pictures.

Just to clarify, the Legendary repop seat skins match the OEM material perfectly

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 07/04/13 05:35 PM

The dash pad is nice, and it's color now matches the dash frame beautifully, but it's no where near close enough to the original in grain or color. Not a slam to BE&A just giving an accurate assessment. Maybe there's another color dash that year? The material darkens when it bakes in the desert sun but this is the less weathered underside edge

Unable to buy everything I want at this time I came up with a temp solution to the carpet issue. I dyed it and bought mats to cover the holes/thin spots. I cleaned up a little too

The light color kick panel is just for the picture, still hunting those

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 07/13/13 09:21 PM

Good luck with the headliner in this heat. I did mine last year during this time talk about sweating. Bring a friend you will need an extra set of hands at some point in time. Home Depot had some small clamps that we're cheap and made the job possible to do.

I started with upholstery glue but switched to contact cement in a bottle which was much more stable for the job.

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 07/14/13 05:27 AM

Very true it was very hot. I got it ready, all necessary trim/parts removed. In an A body back seat, arm rests, window cranks to remove metal panels below rear side windows. I have the headliner ready with the bows installed.

My trucks outside again.... newest arrival. My wife said a week ago she wanted one, I said get one, and today she did. I'll wax it tomorrow and the truck gets its spot back.

Natural metal finish. You need to change out your evaporust I believe. I noticed it would do that when it sat in there too long, or it was stuff I had used on several parts.

Re: Bob's 69 340 4spd Dart - 07/30/13 06:20 PM

Bob you are seeing some of the success of rust removers as well as some of the let downs. Products like Evaporust are great at removing rust....but also at revealing pitting. That's why I've had to buy multiples of various parts in an effort to end up with as many clean pit free parts as possible on my project. It gets old and expensive. BTW Ive recently tried a new rust remover called safestrustremover. It works like Evaporust but seems to do more parts before becomming useless. About $100.00 for 5 gals.

Then he discovered his friend pulled one when building a race car and contacted me to co-ordinate the sale I'm finalizing the details now.... oh and I have another interior parts order in, and on the way.

I need front end boots if anyone knows where to find original replacement tie rod, and ball joint boots PLEASE PM me

additionally I spoke with Mike at REM today and I think we've solved the headliner issue. A new headliner will be on the way.

Next should be dash chrome, exhaust and front end boots

Re: The newest addition..... - 09/14/13 10:39 AM

Dante of Dante's Mopar Parts is always a first rate vendor. Without any hesitation he offered a "the customer comes first" solution to the headliner issue. I have to include this because none of our projects are built without parts.

We've all had issues with incorrect, poor quality, non fitting parts etc. So it's always nice to know what others experiences were, this is one of mine where I'm happy to say I highly recommend him.

EDIT: There is currently a Gold 69 340 4spd Convertible GTS on ebay. This shot shows what appears to be the same aftermarket speakers. Were these a dealer ad on item or just very common in that era?

While comparing notes with other 69 340 4spd Swinger owners I found Saddle color interior cars that came with black carpet. I'm trying to find info on this. Maybe stocking many colors in manual configuration would have been costly? This GTS has a gold carpet. I have lots of thoughts but would love the facts.
