4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 02/02/12 08:29 PM

A little late for this post since the car is already finished. 1 of 4 66 HEMI Coronet 4 doors and the only export. The offical count is this one, the white one at the Garlits museum, red one that went through BJ in 2007 and the blue one sitting in a garage.

Very neat car. It's so plain jane, you gotta wonder how much fun the original owners had with these cars.

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 02/04/12 12:22 AM

is that the car ordered by the FBI? Or is that story an urban legend?

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 02/04/12 12:55 AM

Dan.....Urban legend....Until proven otherwise with paper work anyway, he might have some but I've never seen any of it.

Garlits has the white 66 Hemi 4 door Coronet in his museum, His sign tells people it was an FBI car.

Mike, great job! Thanks for selling me the "left over" trim for my convertable. Are you bringing the car to the Nats this year for all of us to see?

I don't see that happening Lynn, it's to difficult to vend and baby sit a car at the same time. My shop is always open to anyone that wants to look at all my junk.

Mike,
It is great to do business with someone who ACTUALLY builds a car! I know what it is like to run a small busines, I understand that you can't bring the car. Still, it is beautiful. There are lots of us that would benefit from seeing a "correct" restoration.

I would love to Dave, problem is, it's difficult to baby sit a car and vend at the same time. I'm going to bring it up with Ed (Carlisle Events) tomorrow at our B/E & A party, I might consider it if I can get "T" building space for the car.

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 02/17/12 09:16 PM

Hey Mike, not sure if you have seen these before, but my friend Dave Southen who way back when was the Canada Rep for MMCI has sent me these photos and description....

"Most of these photos were taken in 1980 at Sauble Beach, Ontario, Canada at a get together of the National Hemi Owners Association Canadian Chapter annual meet. It was at Harold Davey’s cottage on the beach. Harold was the regional director for the NHOA and was a tireless advocate for the hemi engine. Unfortunately Harold died a few years back from MS. He was a great guy and is sorely missed by his friends.

At that meet there were 7 hemi cars and a number of non hemi cars including two Superbirds, of which the red one belonged to me. You can see the front of the Superbird in the front shot of the Coronet. That’s me to the right of the nose cone, in a white T shirt and hat and beard (20 years old I was then).

The hemi cars, if you refer to the front shot of the 7 cars included, from left to right, Harold’s 1969 Roadrunner, the 1966 Coronet 4 door which was owned by Len Weiler then, a 1969 Charger RT 4 speed car which was owned by “Drew” at that time (Mike Jardine bought and restored it – I haven’t talked to Mike for some time but I’d be surprised if her doesn’t still own it), a 1966 Coronet, and 1967 GTX (both owned by Ray Dupuis – again I suspect Ray still owns them), a 1966 Satellite (it was owned by John Cherry then – I bought it later, and sold it and my Superbird to finance going to school in England), and another 1966 Satellite (I can’t remember who owned it then). All were factory hemi cars except my Satellite.

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 02/20/12 01:34 PM

A bit more info on the car that you may not know from Dave Southen;

"A few more things about the car. I remember at the time (1980) the story was
that the car was ordered and purchased new by a local veterinarian (I think
out of Owen Sound, Ontario). When I first saw the car in 1980 it had been
hot rodded as the photos clearly show.

One of the photos is at the first Mopar Nationals which took place at the
Chrysler Proving Grounds at Chelsea, Michigan in the summer of 1981.

I was offered the car in the early '80's for around $6,500 as I recall, but
as I was at school (and had sacrificed both my hemi Satellite and Superbird
to go to school) it was not to be.

We did buy some gears out of the car (5:13's or 4:88's as I recall) and I
think they ended up in a Duster race car that Bill Veens built back in the
early '80's. After the Coronet was sold in the '80's I lost track of it
until 2006 when the car was advertised for sale on eBay. The owner had
another 4 door hemi car. He was based in Las Vegas as I recall. I sent him
these photos at the time.

I'm glad to see the car restored and would love to see it again in person.
If the current owner of the car would like to contact me I think I could put
him on the right track to find out the real story about the car's early
days."

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 02/22/12 07:54 PM

WoWoW Mike; what an outstanding car. I have also been a huge fan of the 4-door Hemi's since reading about the Floyd Cline car way back when.

Please consider showing it at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, November 17-18. Our Mopar presence has nearly doubled since our inception in '09 and keeps getting better and better. As you surely know, mopars are where my heart is! Since I am a huge fan of the unexpected, your car would be a fine addition to the mix.

BTW; in addition to producing the MCACN show, I have been your neighbor at Mopar Nats for several years now.

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 04/22/12 01:21 PM

I remember this 4 door Coronet well.
It was advertised in the NHOA newsletter for sale out of Ontario in the early 80's.
My brother bought the Superbird that TiMopar described as being his and from looking at the pictures and the descriptions, these have to be the same cars.
He didn't want the Hemi Coronet because it was a 4 door!
Hind sight is always 20/20 i guess.
I loved the car and the color, but he wouldn't change his mind.
Great to see the pics of it restored. Beautiful job.

Re: 4 DOOR HEMI CORONET - 06/24/12 04:24 AM

Wow! Those are some cool retro pics from that Sauble Beach meet. I was there even though I was only four years old.

My Dad has a cool story of doing burn outs in the 4dr downtown Owen Sound and the cops harassing Drew in the red Hemi Charger for about it.

We were talking about the 4dr today actually. Just happens to stumble upon this thread while looking for something else.

Great job on the car Mike. My Dad has the original 426 Hemi emblems off of the 4dr mounted on his tool box.

Just to ad another comment about the red Hemi Charger. It is alive and well in Mike garage looking as good as ever.
