68 GTX

68 GTX - 01/08/12 04:05 AM

As some of you may have seen in the WIW section, I recently acquired a 68 GTX.
I came across the thread with the link to the Craigslist ad.
The ad offered a pretty simple description of the car - 68 GTX, 44,000 miles, 4 speed, no p/s, no p/b, a couple pics of the car in an old hog barn and asked you email the seller for more info.
It was clear by the pictures that the car was black with red stripes and red interior.
I promptly dispatched an email to the seller asking for more info and/or a phone number to call him as well as gave him mine in case he preferred to call me.
In my rush I accidentally typed 69 GTX into the title area of my email. Luckily the seller went ahead and contacted me back despite my error, inquiring if I was in fact interested in the car.
I responded that yes, I was very interested and asked that he call me when he had a moment and we could discuss the car and provided my cell phone #.
By that time it was 9-9:30 and time for bed so I brought my phone with me to bed just in case and called it a day.
Woke up the next morning and went about my business with my phone in my pocket just in case and about 8:30 I got a phone call from Jeff, the seller of the car.
After a short conversation he mentioned that he had someone coming to look at the car the next day(Saturday) so naturally my response was to ask if it was possible to come take a look a the car that day (Friday) to which he responded yes, it was.
So, tossed the dog in the car and off we went to take a look at the car about 90 miles away.
Needless to say upon checking the car over I was blown away with it's condition. Straight out of the late 70's, rusty Cragars and everything.
I checked the motor and trans still carried the correct VIN, fendertag matched the core support and trunk rail #'s. Jeff and I pulled the rear seat and found part of the build sheet.
The body, while not perfect was in very good condition in comparison to what we usually find here in the midwest. It needed no work on any of the floors including trunk floor, trunk extensions are still very solid as was the rear window opening.
The original black velvet paint was still there and looked like it would take a nice shine with a bit of elbow grease thru all of the door dings and other (hate to say it) patina.
We talked about how he had purchased the car in September of his senior year of high school. He had pulled the motor and gone thru it in shop class then had a friend that was going to repaint the entire car but somehow that got derailed after just completing the engine compartment. This was in 1981.
The car then sat in his dad's shop for a while before moving it to where it resided in the hog barn for nearly 20 years.
He really seemed to be having a hard time with selling it, I assured him it was going to a very good home and that I would gladly bring it by to show him once I got it up and running.
After looking things over for a couple of hours we struck a deal, I gave him $500 down(all I had in the cupboard) and wrote up a bill of sale indicating it would be picked up in the next week or so with the balance being paid at that time.
As I was driving home it really started to sink in that I had finally found a fantastic GTX and I started getting really excited about what I was beginning.
Naturally I called my wife and let her know we had another child on the way and all my buddies. I then gave my dad a buzz and asked if he might want to run up and get it with me the next day to which he agreed.
I called Jeff and he said he would be around if we wanted to come get it no problem.
I then called my buddy with the car trailer and asked him if I could borrow it, he said sure but he hadn't had a chance to fix the wheel bearing that was getting loose. Shoot.
I then remembered one of my other friends' dad had a nice car trailer so I gave him a call and he said I could borrow it no problem.
So, ran out and got the trailer right after I got back into town and went home and got my straps and stuff ready to go.
When I went out later on Friday evening I noticed that one of the tires was almost flat on the trailer with a nice nail sticking out of it. *(@#!
Luckily the local wally world was open so I popped the wheel off and ran it down there to have it plugged. Disaster averted.
So, called it a night as dad was going to come over around 730 the next morning to hook up and head out.
Got a bit of a late start as for some reason the trailer tire was a bit low when we got it hooked up so had to air it back up.
Got up there and loaded the car without issue, just used a couple come-a-long's and a floor jack.
Then we noticed that the tire was back down once we got the weight of the car back on it. Luckily Jeff had a compressor so we topped it off.
Loaded the hood, grille, radiator and other misc parts off of the car into the back of the truck, paid Jeff and off we went.
Had to stop 4 times on the 90 mile drive back home to fill up the damn leaky tire but got it home no problem.
I'll post some pictures of it tomorrow both as found and as it sits right now. Hoping to give it a good wash tomorrow and maybe take a little mild compound to the paint and see what can be done with it.

Plans as of this moment are:
Clean the paint up as best it will
Re-do interior - needs new seat covers/foam, headliner and carpet/sill plates. Probably going to replace the door panels as well. Luckily the console isn't broken and all of the other interior trim is in good condition other than needing a good cleaning so that's some $ saved.
Pull the #'s motor and trans, put the in the corner for safe keeping and stick the 512/Keisler TKO600 I have in the garage in it.
Rebuild front suspension and rear axle(if necessary, one of the wheels was locked up hoping it was just a brake drum)
Probably put some kind of front discs on it. I'll keep the drum stuff but I don't want that kind of horsepower and stock 4 wheel drums.
Find some kind of replacement wheels. Not sure what I'm going to do here, thinking about:
Slots on all 4
Cragars or Keystones
Torque thrusts/ET's on front with redlines, black steelies out back with a vintage looking DOT approved slick

Also going to try to find a few stickers from some of the old drag strips that have since been closed. Going to stick those in the quarter windows and try to age them a bit with a heat gun.
Trying to make it look like an old racecar that got put away in it's prime but has been brought back to life and is ready to rock and roll again.

I can't describe how excited I am about this car.
I've had several Mopars, all late 60's - early 70's musclecars and there was always an aspect of them that I didn't like - colors, missing tag, etc...this one really is the whole package other than not finding the full build sheet. Fantastic colors, all #'s matching, 440, 3 pedals and a Dana. Can't go wrong!

I made sure to take several of where it rested at all those years as well as some once it was loaded then after I hit the spray it off car wash to get the process started. I'll be uploading them and posting the pics here in a few minutes.
I plan on leaving it as-is for a few years.
This was a very unplanned purchase and I need to recharge the coffers before I tear into it too far.
Besides, I'm to the point that I'm tired of seeing shiny paint on everything at the shows.
If you read the last couple bits I added to my first post you'll see I have what I think is a pretty cool plan for it.
Anyways, I'll be posting up some pics of it as soon as I can get them uploaded.

Re: 68 GTX - 01/08/12 04:56 PM

Very happy for you! Great story; one you'll enjoy reliving for a long time.

I've come to realize over the years that the story behind obtaining a car, and the experience of getting it home, is nearly as much fun as owning it. I'll never forget driving all the way to Muskogee, OK and buying a 56 Chevy from a Vietnamese guy who'd been in the army during the Vietnam conflict. He put his whole family in a small boat and paddled out to sea just before Saigon fell. All I could think of was what that guy had been through in his life. I remember more of him and his story than I do the car.....he joked with me about being crazy driving all the way from Mn for an old car. I replied "you're the one who paddled out to sea in a row boat". He could laugh about it then.

Great plan you have: Enjoy the GTX!

Here's a whole bunch of pictures - as found, pulled out and after a quick spray off to get some of the dirt off.
I'll get some more up once I get it hand washed and some compound on the paint.

Re: 68 GTX - 01/08/12 08:20 PM

Thanks for the comments guys. I am really looking forward to this project.
I can't believe how lucky I got on this one.

Looking at starting on the interior first this winter as my garage isn't heated and that's something I can do in the basement for the most part. It needs covers, carpet, headliner and a package tray.
I might splurge and get new door panels, armrests and bases while I'm at it. Undecided on that one though.
Any thoughts on who I should tap for those parts?
Oh, I see that there are 2 types of package trays offered - deluxe and standard. What's the difference?

Re: 68 GTX - 01/09/12 12:40 AM

Wow...you have every right to be excited about getting that one! I'd say that the previous owner saved a lot of deterioration by getting it up off the ground like he did...even if it was inside. I'd be tempted to put fresh Cragars on it. Torq Thrusts are nice, but everybody and all their 3rd cousins have them now. Me included! Have fun with the refurb!

You are very right, he did a good job of preserving the car by putting it up on those blocks. Luckily he had the foresight to hang on to the original parts that weren't on the car - carb, radiator, hood, etc...

I was thinking about Cragars but am leaning more towards some 15x10 Rocket Injectors out back with some M&H Racemasters. Not sure on fronts if I go that route.

My first choice would be some 15x7-8 and 15x10 slots but man, they can be tough to find for Mopars.
Then again, there's a nice pair of 14" E/T's for sale in the classifieds that I was thinking of picking up for the fronts and then running steelies out back with M&H's. We'll see, I'll figure something out.

Re: 68 GTX - 01/09/12 02:41 AM

I like the ET slots too, and have 2 sets of them stashed around here somewhere. Not sure if I'll use them though, since they are the unilug version. I never had a problem with the unilug wheels back in the day, so I'm not sure why they're creeping me out now. Just my but that black car with all the factory chrome on it needs shiney wheels at all 4 corners. The wheels like in the pic you posted would look good, especially if they're polished.
Posted By: XS29L8

Re: 68 GTX - 01/09/12 04:09 AM

The unilug aspect is another reason I'm a bit turned off on the Cragars as well. I've had them on other cars and was always worried about them loosening up thus constantly checking torque.

I agree on the polished, dark colored cars look best with shiny wheels.
I'm hesitant though as this is going to remain somewhat ratty looking, I wonder if it would look a bit out of place with nice shiny wheels vs. the as-cast finish.
Decisions...decisions...decisions...

Re: 68 GTX - 01/09/12 06:21 AM

Great find, nice color combo I haven't seen before. If you're thinking about period decals and all that, seems to me that period wheels would be part of the presentation. I like the Cragar S/S idea. My brother had a set of them with the unilug deal, and he never had a problem. Easier to find, too, you can hit up the GM guys.

Had a few minutes this afternoon so I ran the d/a buffer over the drivers side. It's not done, but it's amazing what 45 minutes with a little light compound will do for this old paint!
Here's a few pictures.

Re: 68 GTX - 01/12/12 05:08 AM

Get some Turtle Wax Black Box, its specially made for black cars, and it will fill in scratches and make it shine like glass. It holds up pretty good too. Messy though make sure you wear rubber gloves and it stains clothes. A lot of Walmarts and auto parts stores sell it.

Re: 68 GTX - 01/13/12 06:10 AM

Awesome story, awesome car, great score! I too scored a 440, console 4 speed, 3:54 dana GTX late last fall. Mine is one of my favorite Mopar colors, EE1 blue with a black gut. It looks to be a mostly original 52,000 mile car that had been in storage for a few decades. The only difference is that mine is a 67. I put it in storage for now and can`t wait to get it running again some day. They are still out there to be found and rescued.

Any updates on the GTX?

Re: 68 GTX - 02/27/12 05:39 PM

I like your plan of just fixing what is necessary for now and leaving the total restoration for a later time. I have only been able to control myself to do that with one of my cars. Every other time I get caught in the snow ball effect and end up taking them completely apart and spending 2 to 5 years getting them back together.

looking forward to seeing if you can stick to your plan.

Unfortunately no. I got laid off about a month after buying the car which really put a damper on any plans for it.
Thankfully I did find another job that I start in a few weeks...was getting hairy for a little while and almost had to list it for sale.
I will likely be mothballing it for the summer and hopefully getting rolling on it this winter. In the meantime I will be watching the classifieds and collecting parts.

Thank you. A lot of people give me a funny look when I say no, I'm not going to paint it and/or restore it.

I won't have the $ to restore it right away so definitely going to have to stick to the plan.
Did decide on wheel/tire combo - 15x4.5 Cragars in front with Pro-Trac skinnies and 15x8 black steelies in back with some L60's.

Re: 68 GTX - 03/04/12 04:38 PM

Love the black and red. Mine would have a red interrior but decided to keep the orignal blue. Although it should have white seat covers and door panels. Came with factory 2 tone interrior but i drive the car alot all summer and figured the white seats would be hard to keep clean.
