'63 Super Stock Sport Fury 426 Max Wedge unrestored car - 12/15/11 04:16 PM
I just got this '63 Plymouth Sport Fury Super Stock 426 Max Wedge mostly original unrestored car. Being stored in a barn for about 37 years it's a little rough round the edges but overall in great shape. It's a rare Red on Red factory manual floor shift 3 speed stick car that's never been cut up or modified. Fully documented in the Darell Davis book, it has
ALL of the rare original Max Wedge parts intact and runs and drives like an beast! It's been mechanically redone and the body is pretty much all original with a lot of "patina". It's one of those cars that I could enjoy it "as is" or I could start a restoration on it and make it perfect again. I'm leaning towards leaving it original...

Wow, what a find. You don't find them in that original condition very often. I would have to drive it a few summers, then evaluate a restoration.

What a find and a real beauty. You already know they`re only original once. Anyone can have a restored car these days, very few can own an original car. Your choice.

Time to take it street racing!!! Leave that thing alone, a resto at this time is a no-no in my book.

WOW!!
That is awesome. Leave it as is and drive the wheels off it!!
Although maybe some Torque thrusts in the front and steelies in the back may give it that racy look.
Gratuitous burnout photo please!!!

There is a third choice; repaint and blend where the paint is missing on the front fenders (and any other areas; hard to tell in the pics) and then enjoy as is.
Just another option which may prevent a total resto and save much of the originality. Very cool car.

Very nice car, I thought long and hard about buying that one when it was on e-bay a few times. The PO did a great job piecing the drivetrain back together, I know from experience, paying for these MW parts is very easy, it is FINDING them that is the hard part (he got the deal of the century on the T85 and bellhousing though)!
Leave it be IMO

Yes, the PO found the car about 7 years ago when it had been sitting idle for about 37 years. He did a great job resurrecting it to where it is today without actually restoring it. I plan to leave it as is. I too appreciate the originality of this car and the fact that it survived or was not subjected to the usual abuse most Max Wedge cars were treated to. Original fuel filters, fuel lines, carbs, coil, linkage, etc, etc, etc!!!

I went under there and I didn't see any part numbers. The springs looked like there were mostly natural with maybe some Black paint on them? Hard to tell, they just looked weathered.

Hi Eric,
I have a 1963 MW Savoy, also a 415HP and 3-speed car like yours. I'm trying to bring it back to factory specs, after being cut up straight axle race car for god knows how long. I'm currently working with the engine room and trying to figure out all the holes, fasteners, cable routing etc. I have a thread about it here -> https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=1#Post6754936
Here are some pics:

Anselmi, are you restoring the 63 Plymouth Max Wedge back to day one, or leaving some of the aftermarket race stuff on it. I remember when you bought that old 63 Max Wedge project awhile back, the ad said that it might have been Dick Landy's old car, did you ever find out whose car it was.

Don't want to hijack Eric's thread, maybe start my own on the project section... but at this point I have only decided that the sheetmetal will go back to factory condition. One cool option would be to finish it as the "sister" S/S car for Fred Sanders' identical white/blue S/SA car, that it originally was ordered to be... 50 years too late.
As the car was ordered by Al Roberts Plymouth Inc with the idea of Fred (at that time employed by the dealership) racing it, it wasn't a "sold car" when new. Before the car hit any track, the idea of campaigning a 3-speed manual car was cancelled though, when they thought that the T85 wasn't strong enough (they saw a fellow racer blow up his). At that point the car was probably sold as a new car to someone looking for a nice set of wheels
I have not been able to track down any previous owners from the early days, but heard someone tell me that Landy's car has allready been found and this is not it.

I have a original pair of springs out of one of my 63's that have quite a bit of the silver paint you are talking about. I didn't look to hard for numbers on them but one did have 1213 stamped on it.

I showed the car today at the Land of Lakes Muscle Car Classic car show in Minnesota. It's a BIG show filled with all makes and models of Muscle cars. One of the best in the Midwest for sure. Well, I was very surprised to be honored with two awards today. I won First Place in my class and was VERY surprised to win "The Show Sponsors Choice Award"! There were 100's of unbelievable cars to choose from there and they choose mine. Wow, what a great day! Except for when the heater core sprayed hot coolant on my feet and legs on the way home... More fun in owning a 50 year old original unrestored car!!!
