'76 Fury wagon 400 and a/c

It looks familiar but I think the one that was for sale awhile back was a 360. This one looks really clean.

Taking cars like this on roadtrip vacations was one of their selling points, so why no AC? The other wagon didn't have it either. I guess we're a bunch of wussies nowadays.......

It does seem strange to have it opted pretty nicely, especially the 400 but no a/c. Times have definitely changed.

There were a lot of cars in cooler climates where the original owner didn't order the $300-$500 AC.
Saw that in NorCal, OR, etc well into the '70s.

Yeah, but they opted for the High-Output alternator...seems kinda redundant without A/C.

My parents wouldn't touch AC because of the cost, something else to keep up with (or break) and the gas mileage hit.
On short road trips we'd leave at o-dark thirty, longer trips would start at sundown.

They didn't put ac in the house until the early 90s.
They were pretty frugal about the extras, lol.

Growing up my parents had a 72 Plymouth wagon with no A/C The saying was, need air set the 4/65....four windows down and drive 65 mph

And yes this was in Southern California. One year we took a two week vacation in it with four kids and two adults... We even slept in it a few nights.

Towing package had higher output Alt. But I see no hitch so hmmm.

Yes, I know AC is pretty much mandatory for Summer in most of the US.
But lots of folks in cooler climates didn't order it.
My memory of cruising SoCal dealerships in the late '60s are that AC cars on the lots were in the minority.
I think it was the later '70s when I got a company car with AC - it was getting popular by then.

There's also the fact that the 1970's were the time of Sales Banks for Chrysler, where they built the cars before they had orders, then shipped them to dealers. My step-dad bought a '77 D200 Club-Cab long-box after the '78s came out, black over silver, black vinyl interior, 400, tilt/cruise, but NO a/c. That was a MISERABLE thing for 4 months a year, sitting in those sideways jump-seats, sweating like a pig, hauling a pickup camper so we couldn't even open up the sliding window to flow the air through. There were lots of people that didn't want the added up-front and maintenance costs.

I was running a municipal fleet when a/c became standard on Dodge trucks...in 2001. The rule-of-thumb at that time was when 85% of vehicles were ordered with something, you made it standard to reduce the number of different parts in the supply chain. I had three 2000 4x4 2500s with no a/c, and when the time came to order the 2001s, a/c was no longer optional.
