Value of 392 Hemi engines?

Value of 392 Hemi engines? - 09/23/23 02:44 AM

Local guy has a couple of 392 Hemi engines that he wants to sell. I don't know the full story, he is an older guy and he has had them a long time. One is original and one was rebuilt some time ago. Both have automatic transmissions. He asked me what they were worth and I don't really have a good number. I know that some people are very interested in 392 Hemi engines but they aren't exactly super popular. I haven't seen the engines myself so I don't know which carb or intakes they have. I think he said they both came out of Chrysler cars. I'm guessing $2000 each unless they are dual carb engines and then more for one of those?

What you said for value is exactly what I was going to say.

what automatic transmissions are attached ?
if they are the iron torqflights without the park provision and the e-brake on the tailshaft, you will be changing those to something else, so consider that in the price negotiation.

There sure has been a lot of these old Hemi's showing up for sale recently.

work I may have to get back in the game purchasing them.

Your estimate for them is around the ball park. 392 bring in the most money.

here is a great place for information and pricing. https://www.hothemiheads.com/

Australia is where all mine where sold, the old hemi's are supper hot down under.

If you get them what are your plans?

354s & 392s are the ones to have, and the 392 is the more appealing to most.
I would think $2,000-$2,500 depending on condition & configuration, less of course if a rebuild is needed.
Hot Heads was & maybe still is the Gen-1 place, they'd probably be a better info source.
Cast-iron TFs have little if any value as far as I know, except for maybe the Forward Look guys.

Not sure on value, but when I think of a 392 Hemi, I first thought of
a fuel car ... ala Swamp Rat ...or the Bounty Hunter... someone building a
nostalgia dragster would need a 392 between the rails.

Talk to Gary @ www.qualityengineeredcomponents.com in Bend who is an early hemi specialist.

the older i get, the less it seems i'm going to build one of the two 392's i have sitting on the shelf.
both came from imperials, with one engine having the imperial script valve covers, which i had running around 1980 or so.
i have had both of these engines since the very early 70's, and had plans to install one in my humpback panel truck.
sadly, life has taken over, and time for difficult decisions to be made.

There is no shame in admitting that something will never get accomplished or even started. That is the main reason I sold all my early Hemi stuff 15 years ago. I was moving in a new direction and didn't think I would ever get them. It is was the same thing with all my old VW parts. Has there been times when I or someone need a part I used to have? Sure, but I cannot hold on to everything.
