Name this tool and WIW? - 08/08/23 04:33 AM

My apologies this isn't automotive-related.

I inherited this tool from my Father when he passed away. I've been calling it a 'wrecking bar', but I don't think that's correct.

What is the correct name for it and WIW?

I don't have it here next to me, but I think it weighs around 25lbs, is 54" long, and is at least 40 yrs old.

Anyone?

Thanks!

I always called it a pinch bar. I have a couple here that I use. I even have a cheap chinese one that I bent. You can buy them at Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply. twocents

I first saw those watching others repair railroad tracks after derailments.

When I helped clean out my 90 lb, 4’10”” grandmother’s garden shed I noticed she had one for planting.

A few weeks ago I helped my older sister do some planting in the soil of the rocky shore of Lake Cumberland where I was swinging a pick.
I thought to myself: I need to get her a Lining Bar to keep here at the cabin.
It is a better tool for selectively getting around rocks.

As luck would have it, Deer made short work of what we planted.

“Shipp Laurel” was cross bred to create a taste that deer do not like.
More such plants are needed.

According to FB keyboard warriors even that is too high. I’m beginning to think I should have just dumped it with rest of my scrap metal.

That is because the keyboard warriors don't need one! You bring it by and I will give you ten dollars for it! wave

Drop it off at a local equipment rigger. They will put it to good use. twocents

Yep, heat the sharp end and put a slight bend to it and it can be used to "walk" heavy machines.

Doesn't take up much room. Just stand it up in the corner cause you know about a week after you get rid of it you'll need one.

That's kinda the problem, it has been standing in a corner since 2011. Come Sept, I'll have no more corners to stand it in, so it needs to go. frown

May dad's (now mine) was always called the railroad bar, probably because the crew working on the tracks next to his shop left it out one night... Back when he ran demolition derbies all summer, it was one of the most useful tools between heats and to get the residue loaded on the trailer at the end of the night. A piece of wooden guardrail post 12" long with a small notch cut in one corner is a handy accessory to go with it.

We always called it a "Jimmy Bar" because we used it to maneuver large pieces of equipment around on skates (air handlers, chillers, etc.)

"Jimmy it into place", etc.

Imagine it's a regional thing...?

With the angle change it becomes a
“Miner’s Slate Bar”

https://warwoodtool.com/products/slate-bar

I am named after my greatgrandfather whose pelvis was broken by falling slate. He did recover.

46 years ago I worked at a mine where the Mine Superintendent had “accidently” died in a slate fall a few months before.
After working there a few months other miners told me while eating lunch one day that what really happened was the Superintendent came to work one morning and said he had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. Later that day his employees found him dead under a large piece of slate rock with a slate bar nearby.

No, dictionary says the verb jimmy means to pry and the noun jimmy is a pry bar.

I guess I got in the habit of calling it 'wrecking bar' because I saw my Dad use it a number of times to break up tile floors or concrete.

It had been in my possession since 2011, and not once did I use it, even going thru divorce. It was time to let it go.

Bar talk.

Tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, as members of the Bar are sworn officers of the court.

Opinions. Bar none.

Ships sailing beyond the Bar.

Bar’ed entry.

No more memorable song than “Killed him a Bar when he was only 3”

10 minutes with a big hand grinder and it would be a nice pry bar.

I used to walk the RR tracks that went through our family farm and from time to time id find a four foot or six foot pry bar, still have 4-5 today and the seem to be called antiques and semi costly to buy. I still use them as pry bars.

Two guys with the six footers could easily toss a /6 out of an engine bay. grin
