When I was playing with used cars I ran across a 1972 Trans am firebird with a dymo vin tag. Firebird VINs were under the opening in the dash. Rather than on top like Mopar.

Curious about vin laws in that state. Ohio will stamp a new tag if you have the title and can prove body numbers match it. It's one ugly tag.

Federal laws govern VIN tags. Some states have their own laws, but a federal crime is still a federal crime.

I got a State issued tag for the one lost on my 67 GTS after the previous owner did a color change and the body shop took the plate off and lost it. It had the original VIN number but started with a "W" for Wisconsin at the beginning of the VIN and had State of Wisconsin printed on the tag under the VIN kinda like Chrysler Corporation...

Yes, but any of the state assigned VIN Tags that I have seen look nothing like the factory VIN Tag even if if shows the VIN that was assigned at on the vehicle from the manufacturer when it was new.

Big difference....

HUGE difference! Legal vs. committing a felony with a counterfeit.

Some say. 'Oh, it will be worth less with a state VIN" That is BS. A car with a legal state VIN is worth more than the same car with a counterfeit VIN. twocents

You're splitting hairs, with the Big difference vs Huge difference.
Both mean essentially the same thing.

The point simply was that the state assigned VIN tag looks nothing like the factory VIN tag so there is no mistaking it for a factory VIN tag.
It's not a reproduction in any way sine it looks nothing like the original VIN tag even if it has the factory assigned VIN number.

It will NEVER be mistaken for being a factory VIN tag.

NEVER can be awesome in this case. NEVER commit a felony by using a counterfeit VIN tag. twocents

With a state issued VIN any potential buyer can see it's legal. When a counterfeit VIN tag is used it's a felony. If the seller uses it to fool a buyer, the buyer can be sued & prosecuted. beer A dealership can even lose it's license. up

That's the European one that have been selling online. I don't know what is funnier. That someone tried to pass that off or that Barry actually had to tell people he suspected it was not legit. laugh2

I did not suspect, I knew.

The counterfeits made inside the US can be spotted also.

By posting about counterfeit VIN tags, it accomplishes these things;

1. This post will appear if any potential buyer enters the VIN in a search engine.

2. People that read the post can spread the word to help protect any possible future buyers.

3. It lets criminals know that their crimes will be noticed and reported.

4. It also lets any random person that reads this post that is thinking about having a counterfeit VIN tag made think it over before doing something VERY stupid by committing a felony.
