Does IN have some sort of a title bonding process? They may not issue you a clear title (I would really hope not) without some sort of proof the car actually belongs to you. Otherwise anyone that lives in IN could come to IL and steal my car and go home and get a clear title for it through IN.

There is also a possibility your car was reported as stolen or scrapped at some point in its life and the numbers are showing up in the data base as such. Someone may be trying to save you a lot of problems. If you know a cop, have him run the body number and see what turns up.

Anyway, check through you state DMV website and see if you have options, it probably won't be easy, or cheap, but probably a do-able thing if you want to work at it. The IL process is a pita, but you can get a title. Gene

i had a vin check many years ago when i purchased it. all was clean ,bmv said there was no title issued to this car. and when i was ready for a vin inspection a officer would come out and check it. i did all that. but now the law changed in may and everything has changed in the process. no local bmv can issue a title, it has to go thru state. i just waited to long , it is possible but i dont like having to send a credit card number and allow them to charge me what ever they want. they want all recepts for what i purchased, and pics, and another police inspection. im just venting, i feel better now, lol
