Pertronix Conversion - 02/09/10 06:59 PM

Finally got the 36 back running after being under water in September. Ready to do the Pertronix. I know it has been gone over before but I am still finding conflicting info. To ballast or not to ballast that is the question. And what if you are using one of their coils? Thanks!

When i installed mine several years ago, the instructions said not to ballast, that you needed a full 12 volts. I left my ballast in place just for looks and ran a jumper from one side to the other. Randy

Thanks, full 12 volts to the ignitor or full 12 volts to the coil? If wired according to Pertronix you get 12 volts to the ignitor(red wire before the ballast)and the coil is after the ballast. ??

12v to the positive side of the coil, this is also where the red wire of the ignitor connects. Randy

Thanks guys for all the input. Got the Petronix finished today, it could not have been easier! I did away with the BR altogether since this is a street rod project everything is under the dash including the coil. What should be a good starting point for timing at the balancer? Should I go with a hotter plug?
Thanks again!

I always end up timing by ear. I run the timing up to just under spark knock. That is where the best power is going to be. As far as spark plugs go, you can stark by opening up the gap on your plugs because you now have more spark energy. I think i opened mine up to .045 and have not had to touch anything in the last few years.Randy
