junkyard mini alternator - 08/04/16 10:19 PM

been looking for a mini alternator for the old 331----dont want a large alternator suspended above the engine like all the current available brackets do---plan on making a crescent bracket between the only 2 lugs on the front of the motor--the tensioner bolt for the fanbelt pulleys and the generator lug for the upper adjustable bracket----a regular size alternator lets the power lug touch the front of the head----i also want the mini alternator to have 2 mounting lugs like the serpentine belt units run---the belt tensioning will be handled by the stock fan belt tensioner.....a pretty big order---i hope not...

I made brackets and mounted a standard Mopar alt in front of the head on my son's 54 331 Hemi.
Pretty simple brackets. Gene

Sorry, don't remember for sure, and the car now belongs to someone else. I believe the lower bracket was bolted to a motor mount bolt. It was a pain to bolt in, but once there it worked well. I remember colorful words and an end wrench. It would have been pretty simple because the whole process was done in a day. The belt runs off the water pump pulley and only runs the alt. Those are the only pictures I have. Sorry, Gene

Yes, well sort of. The generator has the power steering pump attached to the back of it, and the gen did not function. We kept the gen for the power steering. We added the alt so we had battery charging capability. Gene

That looks good.

It looks like you are running the 54 and earlier wet intake and original water pump. The later heads that have the water crossover and/or a Chevy water pump conversion might make that location a bit problematic.

poorboy---thanks-----after staring at the pictures awhile i decided my problem was i was trying to keep the belt tensioner---once i pulled that off i used that tang on the block to hinge the alternator---i deleted the rear pulley on the water pump----just need to bend the swinging? adjuster strap and will attach it to the front on the tang instead of the rear of the tang.

Cool, happy those pictures helped.

Its probably the angle your picture is taken at, but it looks like that "hot" alt stud is awfully close to your head. You have clearance there, right? Gene

yes--i have 1 1/8 inch clearance--at first i was trying to use the back set of pulleys and that would put that hot stud right on the head---as you can see we both used the front pulleys so our alternators are spaced the same---and thanks again for the second look...
