Need some schoolin-1956 270 Poly motor. - 07/10/16 09:41 PM

Im probably going to have a couple of projects to do. Since I still need to finish my shop and add a 16x40 bay to the 30x40 to it to give me some more space, Im in the planning stages of my project cars. Which gives me time to decide what to do, collect parts, ect.

One of the cars I was selling as a parts car with no title of was this 56 DODGE CORONET. It has the 270 poly motor and what ever kind of auto trans it came with. The engine turns, so its probably ok for at least a rebuild if a guy wanted to.

That said I was trying to sell this whole, but have been hit with a ton of guys wanting parts. Im now considering parting it and MAYBE using the unique lookiing motor for this 39 Plymouth, if I use its existing volare sub frame instead of the dakota, leaving the Dakota for another project.

I know nothing about these motors but I do know they can look cool and since im not looking for a 400HP motor or anything close, it may be a good option for a rod? I dont know if they are pricey to build, hard to find parts for or can be made a bit cooler looking but thought while I looked on line I would ask here as well.

I am looking to not spend a fortune on a rebuild and can always find a decent cheap 360 or something similar if building these costs a ton?

suggestions/ comments

The Dodge Poly engines (241-260-270-315-325)are all good candidates for a street rod, however, most parts will be more expensive than an LA. Offy has intakes for the low-deck (241-260-270) when they feel inclined to make them....
These engine have an excellent valve arrangement and breath quite well in stock form. If you want to build some mega-hp engine I'd suggest starting with more inches instead of over building a small inch unit.

We offer forged pistons for the Poly engines and can regrind the cam. There are a few parts that interchange with other Poly and Hemi engines so they are not complete orphans. Currently, we have a 270 in the shop for a customer and another one waiting so there is some interest in the 'different' valve covers.

If you are on a budget then buy a 360.

there is a story going round about a gent that used a bored stroked 392 hemi block for a build and put a set of chrysler poly heads on it----everyone that looked at it thought it was just a poly motor--no one that raced against it could figure how it got such big power.....

Yup, considered doing that myself a few times.

Interesting to note that the Dodge/Plymouth and the Chrysler "poly" heads all share, essentially, the exact same chamber design. Ports and valve sizes, of course, vary.
The 318Poly is a direct descendant of the earlier Single Rocker Shaft head and the good folks over at Ford used a verrry similar design for the Cleveland head...hhhmmmm....

".....Yup, considered doing that myself a few times......"

Yup me too. With the exception of custom pushrods (the 392s are raised deck) mixing and matching Hemi and 354 Poly parts should make it fairly simple to do. The thing that always kept it from happening for me was finding a 354 Poly to use for a donor......if you think 392s are in short supply try finding a Chrysler Poly LOL.

First of all, if the Cleveland head copied anything it was the big block Chevy. My '77Ford truck's 400 and my '64Dog's 318 Poly have very little in common on the valve arrangement.

About the 392 - It was a 1/2" raised deck and in order to use the same intake manifolds, the heads were cast with longer intake runners. Many racers thought the changes made to the 392 heads reduced their power potential. The Poly heads would bolt on the 392 block, but there would have to be some sort of adapter to get the intake to bolt onto the heads.

Wayfarer:

I would like to know more about your business:

- name / location
- what services you provide
- whether you have a website

I'm in Newberg and have a 64 Poly I'm going to be rebuilding soon.

Thanks,

The spacers for the 331/354 HEMI heads to 392 are still available. When I did some checking a few years back the 354 Poly and Hemi take the same intake gasket, so with the ports being the same there is a real possibility the spacer might also work. If not a machine shop should be able to build a pair of spacers pretty easily. At the time I was kicking around the idea of building one I was thinking along the lines of using the 2 piece Drag Star 6X2 intake which alleviates any spacing issues.
