Frame interchange 1940 Dodge Coupe? - 01/29/09 04:49 PM

Like the title says, what year and model frames interchange with a 1940 Dodge two door Coupe?

Not looking for late model type stuff, just what old stuff interchanges.

just guessing, but I think the 39 is a bit different. 41 should be the same. 46-48 is a bit different too, but might work.

I'd like to know for sure, if anyone does know.

I know where a complete 1948 four door Dodge is, just seems like a much bigger car.

According to the book I have, a 40 Dodge through 48 Dodge lists a 119 1/2" or a 139 1/2" wheel base. By 49, wheel base depended on the body series.

Chrysler lists a 122", 139 1/2", and a 128 1/2" and 145 1/2" wheel bases for 1940.

Desoto lists a 122 and a 139 1/2" wheel base for 1940.

Plymouth lists a 116", (2) 117" and then a few long ones (over 137") for 1940.

So according to the WB you will need a frame from a Dodge only between 1940 and 1948. The 39 Plymouth and the 47 Plymouth we had used the same front and rear suspension. With that in mind, I suspect you would be safe looking for a 119 1/2" wheel base frame from a 40-48 Dodge. Gene

40 Dodge was the last year with the "X" frame. This generates loads of fun when trying to work driveshafts and exhausts around it. 41 was the first year without the "X." I know the 3 and 5 window D-19 coupes ran the 119 1/2 WB. I think the 2 door sedan may have used the 119 1/2 too, BUT the 4 door was the long one. PM me, as I may have a spare.

My book says a 36 Dodge had a 116" and a 128" wheel base while it lists a 37 Dodge as having a 115" and a 132" wheel base. Both were solid axles, front and rear, an inch might not be an issue in a street rod.

35 Dodge lists a 116", a 128" and a 113" wheel base. Gene

There are like 3 1940-41 2dr dodges listed on craigslist here in CA. Maybe there is one worth looking at if the price is right.
