body-off project - 01/21/09 06:08 PM

I'm starting into a body-off project on my 37 I'm a new member of the group and I need some information.

Plymouth street rod. The frame needs work and updating. Does anyone know how much a P-4 sedan body shell weighs without the doors, trunk lid and interior?

I'm planning to support the body shell on a 2x4 frame designed to replicate the frame rails and supported on short legs. Short of renting a rotissere, does anyone have any better ideas on how to support the body.

Thanks for the info and advice.

A bare 40 coupe body can be lifted by 4-6 guys.
I'd guess it was ~350-400 pounds.
If the floor and rockers are okay, a good 4X4 frame with casters that fits the main floor area should do it. I also supported it with just a 4X4 at the front (under the forward edge of the door area) and another under the rear wheelwell area.
If the body is all rotted on the bottom, you will want more support. A rotissere won't work well on a bare body without some special supports up front.

also, if the rockers or floor are really bad, i would weld in some temporary braces in the door openings and from side to side at the door jams to keep the body from twisting up when lifting.
