Cowl vent, electric solenoid?

Cowl vent, electric solenoid? - 11/23/14 10:38 PM

After liberal amounts of penetration oil I got my cowl vent moving freely with the under dash handle, my question is it looks like a pretty easy install of replacing the handle with an electric solenoid to open and close it. Anybody do this?

Yes but it depends on what you want and why. I Personally I don't see why would someone spend money and time on this and add complexity to a mechanism that already has a very simple and effective means to operate it. but, if you like "bells and whistles" by all means go for it.

Instead of a solenoid I would use a linear actuator.

John, are they adjustable so I can vary the amount I open it? Also I only need about 2-3 inches of travel. Are there lighter duty ones, I probably need about 20 pounds at most.

way back about 25 years ago I made the cowl vent on my wifes car open with a rear wiper motor that I got from the junk yard.
can't till you what car it came from, I picked up a bunch of them at the time and used one.
i took it apart and welded a rod to the arm inside and mounted it under the vent.
I had to time it to be closed, but it worked great

or you can try one of these.

Sure, they come in different strokes/forces...click the links on the left.

The idea is to power it with a double-pole/double-throw toggle stitch...toggle it open as much as you want and stop then toggle it closed.

I'd take Ron's idea a bit farther, use the windshield wiper motor and a linkage to make the vent go up, down, up, down like Pac Man.

The linkage is all there, I just need a linear actuator to replace the handle

Get one of the kits that Ron linked, or maybe try a modern power window motor that senses stops.
BTW, did you try the oil on the WS screws in your other post? I'd soak the frame in some Evaporust, then penetrating oil before applying heat.

Ron. I'm soaking the screws with PB blaster, I will give it a few days

What about a rear pop out window motor from a Chrysler mini van. They are in or out and only move about 2 inches, grab the switch also.

I'm still holding out for the Pac-Man approach, vent "gobbling" up the road like Pac-Man gobbled up the pellets.....
