Making Noise & Smoke Video 1/8th Mile pass - 09/08/13 06:41 PM

Here is a little video from Friday night T&T at a local track. I only got one pass and the fuel pump went out.
Sorry for the video quality.:o
This is the fastest the car has been so far, but the 60ft. time shows it was spinning pretty bad.
A real hoot of a ride though.
Here you go Larry!

Hey Eric,
I ran a new best on that pass. 6.16 @ 113.31 mph. I had a poor 60 ft time though, as it was 1.45. I did not get the car in the "groove" and spun quite a bit. In fact, it was heading for the the right wall! I was about to abort the run, when it started to come back for me. Anyway, at that MPH, ET should be a 6.00. The fuel pump ceased up and that was the only pass I got. If the techs would have caught the time they would boot me anyway, as 6.39 and quicker is NHRA Pro license required territory.
We had a great time, with the new best, and I will do something about the fuel pump ASAP.
The engine seems much happier without the baffles in the headers, and with the correct head gaskets.
Thanks for asking Eric,
Mark

Hey Ron,
I got my old racing buddy/partner, my son and another guy that has been a big help on the car going with me. It is a real good time with friends to share with.
Unfortunately, none of these guys are good with a camera!
I know you are probably wanting to do the same thing with your "Race Truck" and I hope it is getting closer?
Thanks, and I will try and get some better video next time.

mark, those baffels you pulled from your headers, were they "auger" or "screw" style like the circle track guys use ? what are you using now for mufflers ?

Way to go Mark! How does it feel to be back on the track after so many years? Whats it take to get the license you'll need? Congrats! That car is awesome!

Eric,
I was using Car Chemistry baffles.
http://www.jegs.com/v/Car-Chemistry/176
I bought them without doing proper research outside of their advertising. Most Moparts guys do not like them at all. They say that they will slow a car 1-3 tenths, and that is all they are good for! In all fairness, I have to say that I had mine inside the collector and I knew that was a bad idea.It probably prevented proper scavenging in the collector. Funny thing the exhaust looked lean with them in, and a little rich with them out. This is backwards from what I would think would happen.
The car did pick up almost three tenths with them removed and very little other change was made. I retarded the timing from 35* to 32*.
So now, I do not have anything to quiet it down with, and a system that doesn't allow any options at this time. Guess I will just be noisy!

Hey Arno,
Man it is a real hoot!!! LOL I admit to being very nervous this time as I intended to make a decent pass, and I knew the engine was stronger than before. Also, the guys were on me about not doing a good burnout, and I was determined to do a better job of that!
I am making rookie mistakes all the time. I did a big burnout, but failed to get the car in the groove and so it spun pretty bad in first and headed for the right side wall in a slow curve / drift. I am most afraid of tearing it up after all these years and that makes me a little edgy. My 60 ft time did not match the ET or MPH due to the spinning. It is a very exciting ride though, and I am not used to it by a long shot!
I have my license papers from the NHRA filled out by my DR. after I had a physical, and because I am over 55 I had to get an EKG too. Plus all the fire proof suite, and neck brace. Now I have to make 6 runs the way they tell me too. NHRA says 2 hole shots, 2 half passes and 2 passes faster than a 6.39 ET. Then the track owner, and two other licensed drivers have to sign my papers before I send them to the NHRA with my money.
I really just want to get the license as a " Bucket List Thing" . I am not fooling myself into thinking I am going to win a lot of rounds in competition. I am just trying to see what the Ol Car can I can do, as far as ET and MPH. It is not set on kill at all at this time. The carb is too small for the engine.
Thanks for the complement Arno,
Mark

I know that after all that work I would be afraid of hurting the car too. Take your time, get used to it, and then let her rip!

Thanks Guys,
I bought a new fuel pump and have it installed. I need to test it, and adjust the pressure.
We are hoping to get back out maybe next Friday, if the weather permits.
Hope to get some better video. So far every pass has been in the right lane, and the car is hidden behind the starting line wall! LOL
I appreciate the kind remarks and encouragement.
Mark

Re: Making Noise & Smoke Video 1/8th Mile pass - 09/25/13 12:43 AM

Hey Don,
The video is the second time out. First pass was an easy one to see if the car would go straight? A really pitiful burnout. Next pass a little faster to see how it drives and will it stop? Another bad burnout. Third pass a little harder (6.43 @ 107.9) and the engine was very hot! It turns out I had been sold the wrong head-gaskets for the World block. It blocked off three water passages per head. To make matters worse I had antifreeze in the oil! So, I pulled the engine, replaced the rod bearings, ordered new Cometic gaskets as they are special order only.
I have to say that Rich Nedball (author of How to build Hemi) was a big help in getting the right gaskets. He has helped me on several occasions , by email.
So the burnout that you see was an effort to finally get it right!!! My Buddies were telling me to do a better burnout. I told them I could and I would! LOL
After this pass the fuel pump ceased right after I got the time slip, and we were finished for the night after only 1 pass. I have purchased and installed a new pump, and I think we may get back out there this week. I need to be more careful to get the car into the "groove" next time. As I don't care for the spinning and drifting at all! LOL

Thanks Don,
Man you giving me some stiff competition !
Funny thing, so far I have only run in the right lane, and always by myself! Actually the first time out they did that intentionally for safety reasons.

Made a couple more passes last night. I am going to have the car scaled as it is pulling to the right. It made me nervous and I mis-shifted!:roll eyes: so I let off.
6.22 @ 107. 1.38 60 ft. was best 60 ft so far.
Same video /camera guy as before!

Last pass, and my first race. Heads up with a real serious race car! My first loss for this time around! No shame as he was fast!

This pass was 6.13 @ 113.33 Mph. 1.41 60 ft.

Thanks Guys,
I appreciate the kind remarks. I did take the car to have it scaled, but I have not been back to the track since then.
We may take it to a 1/4 mile track that my friend wants to go to. I am not sure about that!?!? LOL

Re: Making Noise & Smoke Video 1/8th Mile pass - 10/20/13 11:49 AM

what did it scale at this time ? did you gain or lose weight ?
Posted By: Hemi Allstate

Re: Making Noise & Smoke Video 1/8th Mile pass - 10/20/13 04:21 PM

Eric,
We were shocked at the weight gain! It 2740 less driver, 2930 with me in it and 1/2 tank of gas. Still no door panels yet.
I guess the biggest gain was the roll cage. I think the chassis man said 2.2 lbs. per ft. for the mild steel. He said there is at least 100 ft in the car. I also put in real glass, tilt steering column, power windows , and the seats are heavier too.
He adjusted the ladder bars, for pinion angle and pre-load with me in the car.
If it will improve the 60 ft. times a little I may get my 5 second pass.
I may try some jetting up too. I haven't touched the carb since I changed boosters before I ever started the engine.
Oh, previous weight was 2490 lbs. less driver with the BBC . Three point bar, was probably exhaust pipe, or an old swing set!?
