Who Remembers "POWDER PUFF RACING" ? - 11/23/12 04:12 AM

I was working in the shop one night and thinking about the 3rd Annual Spring Nostalgia Nationals that we will be putting on in June. All of a sudden a light bulb went off and I asked myself when was the last time that I had heard of "POWDER PUFF RACING". It's been a long time, and for you guys that have no clue what it is all about, IT'S ALL WOMEN DRIVERS.It will be ran like a gamblers race and will have a 12 second breakout. More on this event at www.sledcityevents.com

The problem I see with the Powder puff thing is that times have changed.
Back when those events were popular, very few women drove race cars. The idea was to get a bunch of inexperienced ladies to climb into a race car for the entertainment of witnessing that inexperience displayed.

As more and more ladies entered the racing world as drivers, the entertainment value disappeared along with their inexperience. These days, it wold probably be hard to see much difference, there are a lot of very good lady drivers.

I just don't see it being a big deal these days. Sorry, Gene

used to have it back at the circle track in Tucson, before it went to asphalt. Been probably 18 years or so since I last saw it.

On any given race day I am sure you can find 4 or 5 really good female drivers running their 10 second cars whipping the tar our of their male counterparts. Put 20-25 of those women all together in 12 second and slower cars and put a good announcer on the P-A System and you have makings for a good race. Gene,We even have a pretty good car show for the people who want to show off their talants of rod building. Come on out and bring your ride!

Ohio is a long drivefrom where I'm at. Over the last couple years its enough of a challenge just making it to car club meetings about 80 miles from home. Maybe things will improve, someday.

I'm not sure the word "talents" is the correct word to use to discribe what I do with my rods. Driver quality and safety is way more important then what they look like, in my world. Most people at car shows look for perfection, and there isn't much of that on anything I own. Gene

Sounds like what people think of my rides. All my racers are old school Hemi and Max Wedge racers and I bought my beater when I was 14 and I am 61 now. The beater used to tow my Flathead Chrysler Willys in it's hey days . It is a 48 Plymouth Club Coupe and pretty ratty. It has a Desoto flathead.

My current ride is a rust bucket 48 Plymouth business coupe mounted on a 90 Dakota frame. I'm running the Dakota v6, 5 speed with a 3:55 rear gear, also from the Dakota. The car sat out in the weather all its life and any place that could hold water rusted away. I got it drivable last spring, but its a long way from being close to ever being done. The car is built to represent an old dirt track race car from our local track from around the 1960 era. I have to rebuild the body around the rear window because the only thing holding in the rear glass is silicone. Ya, its a prize.

They are going to have a "Powder Puff"race at Bristol this summer, during the "World Footbrake Challenge." It was limited to a 16 car field. It did not take long for all 16 spots to fill up.
They are also going to have a 16 car shootout for "Senior Citizens." The racer's have to be a minimum of 60 yrs. old. Not many have signed up for that one yet.

What's the big deal about senior racers? Most of the people I know that race are over 60. On the powder puff races, haven't heard of them for a long time. Back when my brother was racing , his wife who had never raced his car went out and ran a .010 faster than he'd ever did, she let it be known for a long time . I think that was the start of the end of his racing day's.

I don't know what the deal is with the senior racers is either. I just know that not many have signed up for it yet. My two best friend's that I race with are 66 and 71. I am the baby of the bunch at a mere 58.
