What dictates a split hood from a reg hood? - 12/14/11 05:32 AM

I know they are different. I am buying a 48 Plymouth Club Coupe. ( Finally after trying to aquire a solid project car affordably. LOL!!!) Any how, it has a split hood on it. I have seen 48's either way as well as other years. Why would mine have it nd others would'nt? Was it a option or body designation? Thanks, Jason. Pics will follow as soon as i get it home. Shold be in a week or so.

Interesting. Is your hood a 2 piece with a hinge, or a 2 piece welded together? All of the 46-48 Plymouths I've seen had a 2 piece hood that was welded (factory) at the seem. The seam was covered with a metal strip down the center, usually chromed. There were gaps in the weld for attaching the strip from under the hood.

The book I have mentions an "alligator style opening hood" under the improvements for the Deluxe body line in 41. The cheap car does not list the "alligator" hood opening, and its not clear if it was an across the board change. It does not list any hood style opening again after that mention in the 41 Deluxe section. Gene

well, that could explain things. The hood is off of the car and propped up against the wall. I saw it was split down the middle. I will own the car in one week. I willl get pics. Maybe what I saw was where it was welded from the fact. it looked like 2 seperate pieces. She also has a 33 Chrysler with 4 suicide doors in perfect shape for rat rod or hot rod candidate.

It must have been easier to stamp a half a hood than a whole hood, because it probably cost more to weld it together!

About a 33 Chrysler 4-door, it deserves the full restorod treatment. It is a fabulous looking car. Where and how much?

I think all stock 48's where split the upper hood oriment is molded for trim to be behind it going down the middel of the hood
