Toyo slick problem

Toyo slick problem - 12/04/11 06:27 PM

My new race car, the ’62 Dodge Dart, was all over the track and actually scary to drive at the top end, and this is only an 1/8 mile track. Well, I thought this was because I only had 1 degree of caster. So offset bushings only got me another .5 degree. So, got some Magnum Force tube A arms (boy are they nice pieces), and dialed in 5 degrees. I could have had 8 degrees, by the way. Car still all over the track. Check the roll out on my 28X9X15 Toyo’s and I have 1.25 inch difference. Got some new tires, Hoosier’s, and car is now a pleasure to drive. So, any body got the same problem and we can trade? How is that for a long shot…….?
Its hard to believe what that 1.25” out of about 90” total makes. 15 passes on those tires, but I got a heck of a deal on them at that 2 for one special…

sounds like low air pressure, what are you running? if it's below 15psi that could be your problem if it's not mechanical.

Re: Toyo slick problem - 12/04/11 06:49 PM

No, its not air pressure, the tires are about 89.25 and 90.50 different in diameter. Tried different pressures from 14 to 20 psi. With the new tires it goes straight. I think if I had a spool it would be a steady pull from one side to the other, but with the sure grip, I am guessing here, locking and unlocking, it is absolutely scary over like 60 mph, all over the place.

Have you tried increase the air pressue in the smaller diameter tire to strectch it out to try and even out the rollout ?

I've heard you can stretch them to match by airing them up to 40 or 50 lbs and leave them out in the sun on a hot day. Of course hot days might be difficult to come by this time of year.

I know of a NMRA SSO team that did testing for Toyo. Saw roll out differences like you mentioned. Also had other issues. Toyo was there to gather data and try to make a slick work like or better than the M/T 3055s. They went back to M/T after the test period.

That being said, all slicks are subject to rollout differences.

Re: Toyo slick problem - 12/04/11 07:57 PM

I haven't tried to fix anything, and I won’t. You can’t believe how out of control this can be. This isn’t like a power skid where the back end comes around and you counter steer. That I am quite good at as I live in Minnesota and do that in the snow all the time. This is every which way and even when you let off its not clear where you are going. If someone had some tires that might match up I would be willing to try that. But otherwise, I wouldn’t let some one have these as they are killers right now, and I am going low 7’s in the 1/8th at 95-96 mph.

I understand your frustration. I spent $650 on some radial slicks from another company and had severe handling issues as well. Best thing I ever did was decide to just eat the loss, and not have to worry about the $$ or what might happen to the next owner. They went into the recycling pile with only 27 passes on them. I sleep good now.

Well Greg, with about 15 1/8 mile passes on these tires, and 5 of them aborted, these tires will probably be tossed. Seems a shame, but what you going to to? I surely wouldn't want anyone to try them as they are. I guess live and learn. I would guess these tires were growing down track adding even more differences.

You know,I really should try that, that is to call or get a hold of a rep. I know they don't make them any more, but maybe they'd do something. I'll post if I do that.

My Hoosiers had about a 1/2" difference and since it was winter, I pumped the smaller one up to 40lbs. and put it in front of the fire place.............problem solved but, an 1 1/2 seems like a lot.

That 1.25 inch difference is a rough measurement, but I really think the growth rate is really different as the faster I went the worse it got. I almost hit the center cone at the finish line during a race at Barona and it was quite a task slowing it down as well. That was the last time I made a full pass with the tires.

My Goodyears come marked with the rollout for that exact reason. You need to specify when you order them that you want them measured and have a matched set sent to you.

I also took advantage of the 2 for 1 sale. I noticed that they are still listed on that website. Are you sure that they have quit making them? My only complaint with them was if you raced on a cool day, once the sun went down, the 60' was no longer consistent.
I will be going back to the M.T.'s next season, along with a set of SRD Assasins. I'm anxious to see how good the car will be hooking next year.

Re: Toyo slick problem - 12/05/11 07:44 PM

hi, I always measure cir on my slicks, if one is less, its aired up higher and set in hot sun so it will grow and stretch to same as the other tire. I have done this on every brand of slick there is. the tire will maintain its size afterwards.the toyo is a very good tire,
I also vary my burnout depending on track temp. if it's cooler, then bit longer. tire still works the same. thats why some guys shoot track temp , for that very reason.just food for thought.

Re: Toyo slick problem - 12/06/11 02:04 AM

Well, I talked to the Toyo Rep for the West Coast (I am currently in San Diego) and she said as a manufacturer, she couldn't do anything, but I should call the distributors from which I problaby bought it from. So I have a call in to them as they were probably closed when I called as it would have been after 5PM on the east coast. But then I am also thinking, why as a manufacturer can't you do something?

This over pressuring the tire to make it bigger...never heard of that before. Don't know if it is worth trying, or worth the safety factor. I am telling you guys, this was really quite a ride, and not fun. I almosted hated to drive the car to the starting line. On one of the first runs it shot to the wall right out of the hole and I backed off in less than 60 foot. And as I said, this car is not that fast.

Re: Toyo slick problem - 12/06/11 02:20 AM

I've stretched alot of tires over the years mostly circle track dirt and asphalt late models. To get the right amount of stagger. The best time to get a tire to stretch is when there new. After they have been heat cycled it's alot harder to get much out of them. As stated before put about 30/40 psi in them and let them bake in the sun for an afternoon and put the right amount in and recheck.
