4.310 bore X 4.500 stroke combos. - 11/21/11 07:42 PM

I have a buddy with a new 4.310 bore KB water block. He is wondering if a 4.500 stroke will cause only make torque down low and run out of steam at the top end of the track. I don't think so.

It is a Hemi with a good set of heads. T&D rockers, LSM cam, yadda yadda, all the good stuff. It is just getting a new rotating assembly.

If you had to put a rotating assy in a 4.310 bore block that was going to go in a 3400# drag car with a glide and up to 300HP of nitrous, which stroke would you go with? I know what I think. . .

It isn't just the heads that dictate how well an engine holds on. The induction (intake/carbs) is CRITICAL.

Build it, it will run great. If it has too much TQ down low and not enough at the top end swap rear gears.

YUP, That's what I'm sayin. It has the big port Ray Barton Dominator intake with a good HP dominator. The heads are well - worked older KB heads and the motor made power by accident with a little less stroke. Long story short, with all the engine had going against it, it still ran good. Now, with all the right parts, and proper assembly, it should be an animal!

There a few Moparts members that are running 4.44 x 4.500. Have not hear from them.

When I first built my currant hemi for the 1st time about 11 years ago,I already had a 4.5 stroke Bryant crank. The builder {RIP Lou Vignogna} wanted me to go right to a 4.5 bore to be "square".I insisted on a smaller bore of 4.310 so I would have room for NEXT TIME I'm on the 3rd next time and now reside at 4.391.This time I got a set of SV1's and sold them little 750's that kept me at 4/5 lbs of boost and 10.ohs and a 9.93 best on pump gas.By the way,my junk is 3850 with me & a full tank of gas.Got on the engine dyno last month and pump gas,28* timing and 4 lbs of boost netted 740 HP.On race gas & 10 lbs pushed it to over 900 hp with 850 ft lbs of torque @ 4900 RPM.Not too shabby considering I could not use my carbs or headers

With a small bore and lone stork with a blower on top will work well. This motor n/a I think will run out of air.I;m thinking of going back to 4.310x4.375 that made hp to and proven motor ( old motor )Now having hard time getting Callies magnum 4.375.Your thoughts ??

Food for thought.... The combustion chamber of a OEM Hemi head has a diameter of 4.310. Sounds like a good match to me.

Its not an Oldsmobile, so its not limited to only making torque

With ported heads and a proper cam, you can make that a motor build power to at least 6500-7000rpm. A lot of N/A and Nitrous Promod motors are under-square.

DTHemi's 655ci Hemi has a 4.56" bore and a 5" stroke. And I doubt he would ever let an engine he built, peak under 7000rpm.

I agree with Hemi-itis, but personally would do a turbo with EFI. I would not do the nitrous routine again, too tough to manage and hard on parts.

Bore size is simply not as critical as a head flow limitation on a Hemi, mainly because the valve motions angle toward the bore centers as they open, alleiviating much of the shouding that becomes an issue with a Wedge configuraion. On a wedge the valve action is straight and parallel to eachother, which means the edge of the valve stays at a fixed distance from the bore, with a hemi, the more you lift the valve the further away it moves away from the bore and closer to the center of the hole.

Sounds like a great combo to me
