1965 Altered Wheelbase Door window Frames? - 11/21/11 03:12 AM

Building an A/FX clone hardtop dodge. The original factory cars had fiberglass doors with 64 sedan aluminum window upper frames. I could just use 65 sedan doors, but they are hard to come by. So can I cut the frames of some other model car doors? I'm also considering cutting and splicing the frames from a 4 door. Any ideas?

Four door front door sedan parts will be the cheapest. It appears the factory cars did not have a vent windows. It appears from my photos the Sox Hardtop did have a fake vent at least on the driver side.If you check (and you likely have) if looks like the factory just removed the front door upper seal and chrome moulding to roughly fit the post door upper section in.The quarter window upper and moulding was untouched. You could also split the upper frame and attach it to the window and the doors.

We have a few post car door frames(steel). We usually fab a 1" square aluminum tube for the frames. You can bend them at the upper front radius and angle cut, weld and smooth of the rear corner back cut angle. At the lower attaching ends we shape a 1/8 flat contoured plate to attach to the fiber glass door.

The originals were an extrusion, and a fairly complex one, since there was a raised lip at the outside and a recess for the window. We found some for the Missile A/FX restoration, but it's expensive, and required a die to bend properly. No vent windows. There's probably $1000 in doing it correctly with the aluminum extrusion.
