HP for 200mph

HP for 200mph - 11/17/11 10:06 PM

How much power would it take to put a 3500lb car over 200mph?

Re: HP for 200mph - 11/17/11 10:13 PM

What body style???

Even a slippery car and a good chassis, it's going to be well north of 2000.

Over what distance? 1/4, full mile, absolute??
As stated before, bodystyle means alot here too.

top speed has less to do with weight and power than it has to do with coefficient of drag. a drop tank at bonneville could prolly hit 200 with maybe 300 rwhp? as an added complication, traction usually becomes the limiting factor when you have a lot of power in a brick. you're up against an aerodynamic "brick wall". spinning your wheels trying to push the car through the air. the salt doesn't have real good traction, relatively speaking, so minimizing aerodynamic drag is job one. then move on to the other stuff. weight is often times your friend when going for all out speed. weight can improve traction. i would love to take my scamp to the salt and see if it will do 200, but i know that as it sits, though it may have enough power, it's a box on a box, and there is no way that's gonna happen. it would have to be MUCH slipperier.

Sorry. 200mph in a 69 roadrunner. I was guessing 2000+ hp.

My car currently has 730hp and runs 10's. Car feels really slow to me now.
Thinking about really stepping it up to bring back the fun. Thinking big turbo motor.

730hp @ 3500# should be well into the 9s. I'd square away the car with the current engine before I'd make a big jump.

Although, twins on a bigblock will certainly get rid of the "feels really slow" issue.

you should be well into the 9's w/ that kind of power. To hit 200 you might need to do a few things. Lighten the car up. Block off the grill, use a front spoiler lower the car.... I used an online calculator and a 3650 lb car would need about 1400 hp to hit 200 in the 1/4. Not saying that's too much or not enough, just what the computer spit out. As mentioned a wedged shaped car is going to do it easier than a brick.

Re: HP for 200mph - 11/18/11 02:51 AM

With me in the car it weighs 3750lbs. The car is tuned about as fast as it will go. Might hit a 9 if it's cold enough I guess.

1400 in a 3650lb car won't get anywhere close to 200

No Problem call these guys for engine details..
http://www.prolineracing.net/
What about the chassis??
Set another $50K+ aside for that too.
You are at dang near Pro Mod levels with that setup.
Just look at Jimmy's Dart, not sure what it ended up running, but your over 1000 lbs more too
Id say $150K could get you out for half a season...maybe...

the guy with the silver coronet (Matt) goes 191mph on a german highway.
Might send him a mail. Car could go faster. it is a 440 with some good internal parts.

no, he now has some indy heads, mechanical flat tapped cam, dual quads and a 2:76 gear.
maybe for you in the states 190mph is magic, but here we have lots of cars running 200mph
with less than 2000hp! 190mph is 306km/h and that is what he drove. measured with gps.
for what do you need 2000hp? for sure not to reach 200mph. an unlocked BMW M6 is close to 200mph and has little over 500hp.

I think the difference is he wants to do it in a 1/4 mile...not on a 2 mile run. apples and oranges.

just used a different calculator and it spat out 2227hp. Wonder why the difference???

Re: HP for 200mph - 11/18/11 03:27 PM

i saw some time slips from a speed event where in the 1/4 mile mark of a 1 mile track the cars had gone 150mph in the 1/4 to go 200 in the mile.

Re: HP for 200mph - 11/18/11 11:57 PM

You won't get there with 3000 HP. A 10-sec car of that weight would never make it to the finish line.

Better to start with a used Pro Stock or Pro Mod chassis.

I thinking will be better off just keeping my car the way it is.
Maybe I will look into a Mustang that's already done and ready to go.

HP, weight and body style play a BIG factor in trying to reach the MAGICAL 200 mph club (1/4 mi or Salt Flats). HP would definitely be different due to the
faster acceleration of the 1/4 mile type car, but
as far as the body/weight is concerned, in both scenarios
low drag coefficency plays a MAJOR FACTOR at that speed. My vote: Over 1700 hp, body/chassis depending for 1/4 mi. 500 HP or better in a mid to lightweight "slippery" body/chassis for the Flats.

I believe several old NASCAR Hemi Chargers, not Daytona Chargers, set several top end and close course records that where over 200 MPH a long time ago with NASCAR legal 432 C.I. Hemi 426 motors with single four barrel carbs on race gas

again...different ball of wax. 1/4 mile is way different than a speedway car. They have what 2 miles to build up speed?

1/4 mile, 2165HP to run 200MPH at 3500lbs

Car would have to weigh 2264 lbs to run 2000 MPH with 1400 HP
