The super dirt late model that I drive with a season old body (beat). My motor machine guy does a little of it all, mainly all alum dry sump sb chev dirt motors. From my findings a quality machine guy is good at doing all high end race motors being it circle track or drag. He does my machine work on my sb mopar drag car motor also.

Jack was one of the best, 4x world champ.

I know some shops love the roundy - rounders, but their guys have the higher end stuff and keep a spare in the trailer. Some shops avoid it, saying there's no money in the "claimer" motors and when average racer blows his junk up he needs it for the next weekend which disrupts the shops regular work.

I help on a Street Stock car. The only one that runs a mopar 360 motor. The rules stated they could use the W2s for heads and I finally this year talked the owner into using them. Short story after they figured out how to hook the car up they went from 9 th in points to a solid 3rd and if the season was longer they would of been there fighting for first.

Don't race one or own one but have worked on more than a few over the years and seen many new developments. Not all good for the sport or the novice racer to get started and be competitive.
my engine builder ,Doug Domhoff builds a lot of circle track stuff. his son runs a late model.i think good quality machine work and balancing has its place on both sides of the fence

A good friend of mine spends winter and spring building dirt track engines...He has a good rep and has been drag racing since the early 70s..He owns a Car Quest store and I buy a lot of stuff from him. He can usually beat Summit on pricing on smaller stuff.

Around here the WISOTA racing is the going thing and has been for quite a few years. 360 inch limit etc. Not a claimer type of racing. Engines built to hopefully last a few shows. Not many Mopars running but those that do made it known that they are there. A couple of good friends of mine run them and have multiple feature wins and track champion ships.n These guys both are meticulous in there engine builds and roll their own other than the balancing. I have seen and helped them go through several new rocker sets just to get a matched set. These were not Mopar Perfomance sets so don't get off on that tangent.
Heck I have a friend that races Chevies and has been know to do the same. So it isn't just Mopar.
Another friend run mod 4's with a winning 2.2.

I build both. Dirt motors are 90% of my business. The past few years, I have not been as busy due to the fact lots of guys have sold out or just quit for awhile due to lack of money. Most of the dirt motors are the "small" block Chevys. In the past, I would do 10-15 motors during the winter. The last couple winters, it is down to 3-5. Summer is usually slow, but that's when I race, so I like that!!

Gary Stanton who builds the Drag Pak engines for Dodge also has built engines for past Mopar sponsered factory racer and Lucas Oil Late Model World Champ Steve Francis. Two Kentucky boys.

There are some engine builders that produce drag, paved oval track, dirt oval track, pulling tractors, etc. But, when you get up a certain level, builders tend to specialize in just one form of racing. Why? Techology and $$$$ are the main reason. For example, in our past life of dirt Super Late Model, the "race for a living" World of Outlaws types would have 10-12 engines in rotation. It takes a large shop to service more than 2-3 of these teams during a season. Why does it require so many engines? For the different types of tracks they compete on----different cubic inches, different torque curves, etc.
At that level, it's not a poor man's hobby!
