DOHC HEMI, how many built.

DOHC HEMI, how many built. - 11/07/11 07:23 PM

This question came to me while eating lunch at a little mom and pops joint here in town. Everyone here knows me as the moparnut. The guys were up at the bar, yes already at the bar and one guy says a buddy of his had a plum crazy purple 70 super bee with a DOHC Hemi in it. I perked up a bit when I heard this cause I knew there was only like 2 built. The one who knew me said hey what do ya know about this. I said I didnt really want to coment on it and get involved in the argument, but as far as I knew only 2 were made.

So am I correct, or did some cars get them. I thought they were 100% experimental and only a NASCAR deal.

Yes the guys are the bar were a tad drunk by 12:00 today LOL

I'd bet big money that, that DOHC Hemi that guy had was also 440 cubic inches.

Ignorance is bliss I guess...

AMT/Ertl made a model kit of a Pro Street '70 Bee and I believe the box art on one of the variations of the kit depicted a Plum Crazy version. The kit came with the parts to build a DOHC Hemi. Just throwing that out there...

Anyways, factory experimental project from 1964. I believe there is only one complete version known to exist.

Well I know this might need to be in the general forum, but I figured the Race guys would know the real answer.

And this Super Bee could have easily been a caprice classic lol

I went to Vo-Tech in 1975 with a kid who said he had a 484 with six 6 barrels on it. Either the most profound case of wishful thinking I have ever been exposed to , or he was WAAAAAAAY ahead of the stroker phenomenon.

Somewhere I read an article about those engines, and as I recall, none were built, but that they had a mock up and it was shown running but used an electric motor to turn it so the Nascar officials would see it and know Chrysler was serious about its development. The idea was to get the Ford engine banned, can't remember which one, but the plan worked. Ford's was banned and Chrysler didn't have to spend a bunch of money to keep up. Could be wrong though.. About due for my one this year....

The answer is officially "None" because even though they got close, none were actually completed or ever ran under thier own power

That is correct ! It was to stop the Ford 427 SOHC eng from being used in NASCAR. If the Ford eng would have been let in Ma would have built it. Ron

So where did the HP numbers come from on that engine? I heard that made over 900hp on a single carb and they had rocker issues due to rpm.

Any thing real in what Ive been told.

In 67 a 484 stoker was not unavailable. At least in a hemi.
Kellog if I'm not mistaken.

What Dodgeguy101, Scott & 383man said, according to the guys that worked on the project.
Wonder which has the highest BS ratio per capita? Bars, or the "experts" at car shows?

Depends on how much firewater was consumed.

As far as I know that DOHC Hemi eng never ran. As was said it has an electric starter turn it over and that was it. It was enough to let NASCAR think it was built. Ron

That 6 six barrel intake is pretty rare tho, never mind the 6 barrel carbs
