Comp cams XE285 High lift - 10/25/11 08:37 PM

Would this be a good cam for a street/strip 10-5comp 340
in an -65 Dart?

I'll start the replies...yes if your compression ratio is a REAL 10.5:1. If it has "10.5:1 pistons" and you haven't measured I'd say the XE275HL would be a better choice.

as long as you have 10to1, a 3k or better stall, and 3.91 gears or lower, then yes it would be a great cam. If you don't have these especially the gears then no it would be lazy dog.

I ran the XE284H which is very close (other then the extra lift) in my 451 Duster with a true 9.73 compression ratio, Car ran a best of 10.91 @ 121 at 31xx lb. race weight, Stock 906 heads, M1 single, 750dp, 9.5" 4400 stall @ 4.10s with a 28" tire, 60ft. adveraged 1.52-1.54 with a best of 1.51, It was a torque monster, very good street manners, was installed at 105.5, You will be very happy with that cam, but i would run a 9.5" stall at least 38-4200 flash & minimun 3.91s. I'm sure with a little better 60ft. that night i would have pulled off a 10.89, That is outstanding for such a mild mannered cam shifting at 56-5700 .

Joedust, I don't want to be offensive and you have a nice running combo but
Its a 340 he's asking about. You can't really compare a 340 to a 451. The 340 is much more sensitive to cam size. They make good horsepower but the torque has to come from gears and higher converter. A 340 with a 285 cam is gonna want to shift at 6800rpm as well.

I run a 284XE in my 'Cuda with 3:55s in the rear. Compression is 9.72 : 1. Heads are Indybrocks with PBM valves and minimal port work. 1.5 :1 Rockers. Cam was installed at 104.5*. Torque is NOT a problem. Actually it is a problem, you can't use full throttle in 1st. gear without blowing the tires off. Part of this is due to a little too much gear reduction in 1st. gear, but mostly it's just more torque than the tires can handle. It was just as bad when I had 3:23s in the rear. It pulls hard from right off idle to the rev limiter [ 6600 ]. I shift at 6200. Very flexible engine with a broad power band. It will pull down to 1400 in 5th.gear [ equal to 2:41 rear gears ] without bucking and pull up smoothly from there. If I had it to do over again I probably would have used the 285 HL.

Yeah i wasn't paying attention LOL, Ok then, I think the cam will still work fine & be streetable in the 340, I would go with at least a true 10.1 too 10.5, 43-4500 stall & at least a 4.30 gear. Aluminum heads at least 10.8

One other thing, if you're building the engine look for pistons in the 500 gram maximum range. Stock 340 pistons weigh as much as many big block pistons.
