Small block belt cam drive users ? - 10/25/11 05:43 AM

I am putting together a Weber belt drive to use on my bullet.
Got it used and there are a couple issues I am battling.
When I got it , it had one thrust washer and one torrington bearing.
I am guessing that the block was machined for this set up , because there isn't enough clearance under the thrust plate for all of it even with .099 of shims stacked under it.
This is way more shim than I would like to see under it anyway.
I spoke with Dave Weber and he never used the torrington bearing on his deals.
When you set your cam end play , did you have any problems or things that had you scratching your heads ?
The block plate has also been cut down for a short deck motor and the holes for mounting the front mount distributor are cut in half.....I am debating whether to weld material ( about 1/4 " ) to the area to restore the holes or buy another plate..........since I just got laid off , I am thinking cheaper is better , but don't want to do anything that would be impractical or unsound. ( again )
For those who would advise " you should have bought new and not had to F*#% around " I cannot disagree.
Next time I will.
But I have the drive and the distributor ( with B.B.C. brackets ) for pretty cheap , and my stubborn side won't let me not try and make it work.
Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

can you get it to work with out the bearing?
with just shims?

the plate is just a flat sheet, easy enough to make a new one...

Alot of the comp guys used to convert them to run the thrust bearing, but it did require machining the block.
I made up a few tall deck plates for those belt drives, although I had a seniors moment and put the idler bolt holes in the wrong position. They are collecting dust in a cuboard at work nowadays. I might get around to making the plugs and repositioning them.
