Looking for opinions on ring pack................. - 10/23/11 05:05 AM

I talked to Jason Pettis about my rings and he feels strongly about using upper and lower back-cut rings in my combo saying that he`s torn down endurance type motors w/this package and that they`re still sealed up nicely after thousands of miles. What do you guys think?

Go for it, it is worth some power Is Jason going to set the back clearances with ring spacers or are you?Either way make sure it is what he recommends He,and a lot of other competent engine builders, has been doing that for years

Thankxxx Cab..........he`s going to show me how to wrap the spacer material and Ed Moser(who worked along side junkyard Ed and is a bad ass head guy himself)was hanging out w/me yesturday and is going to work my intake for me in exchange for me doing his neices brakes. My biggest concern is the life span of the back cut stuff but apparently it works so I guess we`ll soon see and I MIGHT even be working back at Pettis but time will tell.

It is a trick that is usually reserved for stock class guys and rules limited classes etc--yes...with reduced radial tension the engine will make another few HP depending on the combo but really...the way to go if you need that extra few is a modern thin ring package--rings will cost alot more--pistons too, and for what? A very small percentage increase? If you really need to be set on "Kill" then do it but a shelf stock piston with 1/16th rings is way cheaper, DEPENDABLE, and will make plenty o power. I use the thin packages on circle track limited engines that need EVERY HP we can get but for a fast drag car it is just extra $$$ out of customers pocket IMO. Most folks are better off to forget about the "tricks" and just concentrate on excellent machine work, a GREAT valve job, and a well tuned distributor (crank triggers are the BEST thing ever invented)

We`re not going w/the 43mm stuff just back cut 1/16th rings for some extra power and as I stated, he`s tore down several motors that show no ill effects of that ring pack.

I`ll post that info when I know mid week as he`s sending the rings back to get the back cut stuff from Total seal.
