how do you date slicks? - 10/16/11 11:16 AM

not take them to the boozer, get them drunk & take them into the back seat of your car, but how do you tell how old they are? my size slick is out of stock & there's a set of slicks, similar size to what i'm looking for on a Rail thats out of service. they're Goodyear Eagles & the rail they're on has been parked for 5 years living in an enclosed trailer. before the rail got parked the slicks only saw 1 meetings use but i'm concerned they maybe a bit hard now. still it would be good to know exactly what year they were made as a bargaining point. so how do you tell?

Just what I was thinking. Dinner first. I've never checked, do they have a date on them like DOT tires?

I usually just run a fingernail across them and see what kind of mark it leaves. Theres always the durometer.

I know that M.T.'s have a date code on them, but I don't know if other brands do or not. I will run a new set for 2 seasons, after that I will sell them pretty cheap. No matter how much tread is left on them, the rubber has gotten too hard to hook properly. I would pass on the 5 year old pair. They sell a product that is supposed to soften the rubber back up, but I've never tried it.

After taking 3 years off of racing, I debated on buying new slicks, since mine only had a few passes on them. Decided to wait and see what they did first. I've had the most consistant 60' times ever with my car.

IF they have been inside, and only a few runs on them, AND you get a deal, why not?

I bought a used set of M/T 10.5x31x15 W several years back, the seller siad they had two runs on them. They looked like brand new with maybe a tiny bit of spin on them, still had some of the [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] sticking out on the main tread

I made one burn out on them three years ago and broke the ladder bar mounts off of the 8 3/4 housing. The sidewalls leak bad when mounted tubeleless so I dismounted them and did the Dawn dish soap trick and remounted them before that burn out. They stayed in the trailer mounted up until last week, I dismounted them and put them on another set of wheels and used them today, 5 yrs or more since new

They dead hooked right from the start, best 6o ft. ever for my car 1.397

My message is look at them real hard, try the fingernail dig in and so on, if they look okay go for it. I did buy another set of smaller Goodyear drag slicks late last year, 12x29x15 and wore them out this year. Goodyear marks there tires with a manufacturers
date code, Federal law on all tires made and sold in the U.S.

they also have the compound on them, contact Goodyear and ask for help on I.D. which compunds and how to decode the build date on them.

BTW, I have seen two tires bought from Summit year ago that where 18 months different in there build dates

The guy ran them and they didn't work the same, one would spin worst with a posi than the other newer one would

2008 photo. Firestone stopped making slicks in the mid 90's.
