smallblock whats beter 4" stroke or 3.79 - 10/13/11 11:58 PM
looking to build a new shortblock its going to be a r block or ritter i have w5 heads that flow 333 on intake at 700 1050 dominator and indy carb roller cam of course, 727 brake and 5500 stall 430 gears with 28" tire car weighs 3150 with me which would make more power 4" stroke or 3.79 stroke

I dont think it would run any worse with the 3.79 crank, than the 4 inch crank. The fact of the matter is that EVEN w5's are too small for anything over 400 cubic inches, Imo. I know my w5 headed 422 was flat gulping for air at about 1150 feet in the 1/4. The 4 inch crank will lower the effective power band down a little, and that might make it more appealing.

If it will flow 333 on the intake it should handle a 4" stroke.
But, that said, stroke just lowers the power band. In most cases we would not want to turn 10,000 RPM so we elect to go with more stroke and turn 8,500.
I like strokers easier to choose converters and easier to maintain compared to a short stroker making the same power.

My w5 heads " supposedly" flowed 330ish as well, and on one bench they went 297 and on another bench a near identical set of heads were just a touch over 300 max, so numbers are just numbers.
Mine that went 297/303/330 depending on what one wants to believe did go 9.80's at 3350 pounds on a near stock suspension, so..who knows..
But a w5 is for a fact a " small" head for a 400+ inch race motor with a huge 4 inch stroke crank...mine wheezed at the top end,at 7000+ rpm, just small head relatively speaking. That small 2.08 max intake valve just isnt suited for optimal performance on a big inch long arm motor..will it run good, sure, are the heads a governor to a degree on a big inch motor..absolutely.

I like the 3.79 stroker for those heads at 396 cid. Turn it 7500 rpm all day long with good parts.

where are you finding 3.79" cranks?
yrs back i looked everywhere for one...and couldnt find.
i needed a 385" max cube rule engine for a cheapstreet class..

Who makes pistons for 3.79?

Both K1 and Callies sell a 3.79 stroke crank.

If you are head limited the engine will make the same power at 5% less rpm. So if it's 7500 with the 3.79, then it's 7100 with the four incher. If the heads aren't the limiting factor then you'll make 5% more power with the longer stroke.
Build the biggest shortblock you can afford.
There's a quote from Larry Widmer that goes something like this, "RPM means ruins people's motors."

I know my Indybrocks sure liked the 4" stroke it would run 9.7xx at 138 in a 3000# car with what i call a milder solid roller

I bet any money if they changed the rules to allow bigger pro-stock motors they would run them tommorow even if it meant lower RPM.
A 4 inch stroke is only a limit to RPM and NOT power or ultimately speed! Run the biggest cubes you can afford, that being said BPE makes it easy and affordable to run a 4.25 crank if you have 340 mains and 4.125 if you have 360 mains.
