New best! finally - 10/12/11 05:42 PM

I got to work on the car and finally get it done for some passes at Woodburn last weekend. First pass it ran a 9.62 @ 142.92 foot braking and short shifting with 11psi in the 33x17 stiff sidewall slicks. Next run 9.75 @131? and running bad. I found that the front air cleaner was shifted back and was covering the boosters, everything else looked fine so I put the steel filter lids back on. Put slicks at 8psi, and made another run = 9.42@ 142.92 (yes-same MPH). 3rd pass, rear QA1's up from 6 clicks to 7, slicks at 7 psi, raise shift point from 7200 to 7500 = 9.37@143.15mph with a 1.30 sixty foot time. The car was running great but some bent ladder bar brackets ended my day with a car sitting crooked. I can only blame myself for not bracing them enough.
I didnt do any jet changes or move the timing, so I feel like theres some left in it. Heres the combo; Porter Racing Head Mega-540, Indy-1s w/2.25 intakes 360cfm. Comp Roller 281/292 .727"/.706" 112ls 108clIndy t-ram,1050's. Sorry no vids. I'll post a pic of the car as soon as I can.

I noticed you're running a T/R. Any pics of it in situ? Would like to run one myself someday

Nice runs.... congrats on the new best.... I braced
my ladder bar bracket on my Rampage mainly due to
using a lateral link... that puts a lot of side load
on the brackets(right side)

Re: New best! finally - 10/13/11 05:58 PM

Thanks guys! I will get some pics up soon. The T-ram looks like most other pics out there, the one on Lil'demon's car comes to mind. Im hoping that once the carbs are sealed by some kind of scoop, and the engine and chassis (slicks are 6 years old) get sorted out I'll be somewhere around the 9 flat/ high 8 area. That should only take a few THOUSAND dollars more, right? By the way I think the track is at 300 feet above sea level IIRC.

With a 2.25 intake valve what size bore r u running?
Posted By: 540CUDA

Re: New best! finally - 10/13/11 07:09 PM

4.375" bore 4.5" stroke. I guess most others prefer the opposite to get to 540ci but mine works pretty well.

180 above mean sea level is what I was told the first time I raced there years ago(2005). I saw -153 ft below sea level indicated(with 29.92 in the Colesman window for B.P.)on my aircraft altimeter in July with 85 F air temps and 45 % humidity My Performaire showed between 2100 and 2500 FT D.A., depending on the time of day and outside weather, mroning to late afternoon

Thax. I was wonder if a 2.25 valve will clear a 4.375 bore.I'm planing on having some head work did in the near future so i can have the 2.25 intake installed

hey Tony,
i was beginning to wonder if you were ever going to get that thing back to the track.(not that i'm really in any position to talk.....mine hasnt been raced in about 4 years )

sounds like you're starting to get it dialed in.
what was the rpm through the traps?

Re: New best! finally - 10/03/12 04:57 PM

Dwayne, I cant understand why I never saw your post but Ive been meaning to call you and update you. Last Saturday it ran a 9.30 145.13 going through the traps at about 7200? I wish I had a playback tach. I found an issue with one of my carbs and decided to get them flowed prior to all those runs last year. They came back to me with 92's and I have since jetted them up to 94's. That gained me nearly 2mph. I need to get a scoop on it still and get some new slicks, thinking about some 32x16 MT's. Im just having fun getting it down the track finally. http://youtu.be/yr7hzWzcEIM

Sounds like a lot of fun.
That thing likes some RPM!
I shift my 511 CID at 6700 (light comes on, actual slightly higher). Never tried over 7000.
My heads are close to yours, maybe a touch worse. Must be that roller cam.

I run the 2.25" intake valve in my 440-1 heads on a 4.375" bore also. I recommend checking the valve reliefs in the pistons carefully to clear the larger dia.

There are multiple Woodburn racers who run E85. I know at least one of them gets it in Portland, which would be more of a drive for you.

Tony,
The closest place that I am aware of for e85 is a gas station just off of I5 in springfield, by the harley shop. That is where everyone I know gets it from.

I ran E85 with a carb in 2008.
In 2009 I bought a Ron's Flying Toilet injection system. The first 3 months I ran alcohol to dial the system in, as E85 with a Toilet was not well known. After a successful alcohol tune, James Monroe at www.killerrons.com told me what nozzle jet size change to run E85. And I ran that up until June of this year.
Due to the high cost of gasoline, and therefore E85, in 2012, I decided to switch it back to alcohol. I get a 55 gallon drum for $150, $2.73/gallon.

Performance change is hard to quantify. I changed heads and cam when I first switched from race gas to a carb and E85. But I would say in the summer heat injected alcohol is 0.2-0.3 seconds quicker than gasoline, and E85 is about 0.1 slower than alcohol. In cold weather, 55F, there is almost no difference in ET, IMO.
