Re: SS/DA cuda progress - 10/10/11 02:29 AM

Glad you are making progress and the engine sounds great! But I'd like to offer my on your wheel width.

If you want to have as much traction and consistency as possible, I'd suggest getting a wheel that is as wide as possible. Considering the narrow size you are looking at, I'm guessing you don't plan on tubbing it. But I'm pretty sure an E-body wheelwell will accomodate at least a 10" rim with whatever width tire you plan on fitting into it. The widest tire you can fit will work best with a wheel that is at least the same width or even 1"-2" wider! This will provide a flatter footprint while allowing you to run more air pressure for a more stable tire. Wrinkled/wadded-up sidewalls may look impressive, but that "wrinkle" can transfer to the tread surface of the tire and reduce traction. Plus, the higher pressure will help the sidewalls, thus the slicks, last/work longer.
Stock class cars tend to run 9" slicks on 10" rims!

Re: SS/DA cuda progress - 10/10/11 02:43 AM

I get what you are saying.I have been in wheel hell for a few weeks.I put 9x30 slicks on it & in my opinion I dont like it.It looks like a stocker.they were on 10 in. rims.I would rather have a 10.5x28 on the car.Ideal would be 10.5x29.5 but it will not fit.I only have 12 in. from the leafspring to the wheel well lip so I am very limited to tire size...I am still on the fence. The keystones will most likely be for show as I would be afraid of breaking them.

What are your plans for the Demon ? Or do you plan to put the 493 back in it ? Ron

Re: SS/DA cuda progress - 10/10/11 03:46 AM

Hey Ron. 1st off congrats on yur motor!and new best!
I just sold the demon a few weeks ago to Jay luckert.
his green duster got wrecked so I sold it to him.
This is my dads old 70 cuda that I have had forever.
last time I drove it was 21 years ago so I figured I would do
something with it.Just finishing up a chrome moly cage in it.I will
post some pics of it if you guys want to see how its going.
I am sending the body to mark dumer to paint it pearl white
in a few weeks. When i get it back I will do all the retro stuff to it. IE: Flake,Candy,& Pearl.I am going for the 70's retro look.
I started building a hemi for it.I have a new mega block 4.50 bore
Alum. heads,& a 4.625 Bryant crank for it so it will be 588 cubes.
small cam with a Rat Roaster.Just enough to get it to go 10.o's for the heads up class & nss stuff. I just want to go out & have some fun.

Yea, just another 50 or so would be great

I'm doing a similar thing & even started a thread on here about my SS/DA build before I sort of swerved off into a (street legal) Pro Stock, Keystones, 488ci Hemi, dual plug, magnesium tunnel ram, solid roller cam etc in my '70 Barracuda so I would love to keep up with your progress & pics

Would it be too far out of your plans to install a 3/4" offset kit for the leaf springs? Aside from relocating the spring pads, it's a bolt-in with no cutting and would still look stock.

Cal-Tracs could help if it doesn't take away too much from the stock look, considering the limited tire size.

yes I thought about the offset spring kit.I dont know how much they would stand up to power wise.I allready have the whole cal-trac suspension for it.Split mono leaf, bars, shocks.I dont know how the offset stuf would work with the cal-trac stuff either.I dont know if there is enough room for the front bracket & the front cal-trac bracket. Thanks for your ideas though I have been battling the whole way through this project on trying to keep it mild.

Just curious what method r u using to get the joint tight like that(Pipe Master)?
Posted By: grncpe

Re: SS/DA cuda progress - 10/15/11 01:50 AM

NO RONNIE! you will have to wait!
Racerx no pipe master. I do them the old school way.cut off disc,& a sanding disc.I have done alot of bars over the years so I got it down to a science.you will be able to see with more pics just how tight this bar is.the back seat fits in it,dash goes in,door handles work, clears all the plastic in the car also.the rear bars are very tight to the trunk hinges but they clear and mounted all the way back as far as you can go in the trunk.

When it is finished it will be set up as a early SS/da car.
Full interior, with console,All steel, & painted to boot!
the only real modern things are the brakes,& caltracs.
aside from the msd & parts like that. but they will be hidden.

Ron I closed that shop about 4 years ago.& stopped teaching @ earlbeck around then.I run a fab shop downtown, but I still do a fair amount of stuff at the house it is set up.

Wow thats a really good question.building it to race but just needs exhaust, street tires,& tags to drive it on the street.

Ok more pics....window net.notice that I can still open the handle
with the net up.there is a hyem end @ the rear top,and the normal seat buckle @ the front top. lower is a bung welded to the tube with

I am saving a little weight with the hemi,Alum heads, water pump
housing. But it will have a rat roaster. Not light.Alum. Stock mount afco rad. also.So I am trying to get it a little lighter.Got a brand new strange dana for it also...more pics soon!

I will be adding front bars in this week since I decided that
I would hate to bend the front rails if something happened.
The bar is painted but touchups are not a problem. I plan to have it ready for the spring. Not sometime next year.Spring! I keep telling myself that.I will load new pics this week....O how about these NOS fronts?

Re: SS/DA cuda progress - 10/25/11 04:52 AM

Tom I am using an Afco rad also as I bought mine from Mancini for about $329 I believe. Has the brackets on it just had to line it up to mark the holes and then drill the holes. Thats it then it bolts right in. It has been working great for me. Thats some really sweet welding work you do. Ron

Re: SS/DA cuda progress - 03/02/12 02:16 AM

Hi, no dash bars as it has a stock firewall.you can prob. fit 1 in with stock gauges but you will have to put a roll in the bar & notch the brake pedal bracket that attaches to the firewall.I think the stock gauges will still fit if you do that.I will have more pics 2moro nite of the car.The underside from the firewall seam back is black rhinolined now.It is alot thinner though and harder than the normal stuff you would think of in a truck bed. Also the trunk & engine compartment are painted.sheet metal goes back on this weekend & final blocking will be done.Should be all painted by mid week next week.Jeez sorry to babble on I could write a book on this 1

I know what you mean on the weight.I just cant bring myself to butcher anything on this car as it was my dads,& it has been in the family for 36 years,I bought it from him 24 years ago so I will just put a little extra steam in the motor to make up for it.It is all steel & full interior. So hopefully its not to much of a turd....

WELL I Really like what you have done so far. Not a fan of the bubbles, but it does look more 70 super stock style with those. Reminds me of the Wonder Bread Funny Car.
But I gotta ask, how do you get all of those pictures strung together??? LOL
Everytime I try to attach a picture, I am told it is too BIG. No way is my one picture is as big as all of these together. But again, I like your work so far. Can't wait to see it finished.
GOOD LUCK

Just saw I had a few responses.I did not take as you knocking it at all.The no lace comment, you will have to wait for that....The funny thing is when I unbagged the bubble the first thing I thought of was wonder bread...Now thats funny. On the pic string.I had to set up a photobucket page & they shrink the pics down so that you can copy them on here....I had my wife show me how to do that Thanks to all that show interest in my project,& I enjoy reading the comments so any replys are good!

This is not the same Hemi that you listed the specs of at the start of this thread is it?

What are the specs of this engine?

I'm looking forward to seeing pics of this project finished, you are doing a very good job & great workmanship.

Bobby DeArmond made the first uncorected (non-altitude factored) 9-second Stock Eliminator run at Mission Raceway in Canada in 2001. I know Joe Aluise made a 9 second corrected pass in Boise earlier that year.

Re: SS/DA cuda progress ( DONE! ) - 11/02/12 11:37 PM

ve to download the pics out of my phone.but I have a ton from when I was doing the paint.Ill put a few on here to keep you going until the others go on.I dont think I have posted any pics in like 6 months with it.Enjoy. Also it did not run well at all,As soon as I launched it thats when it would start breaking up,pull second same thing, same thing in third.back off the throttle it would clear up & then I could start winding into it.So I diales a 11.20 & just drove it.work the brakes on the other end.it wasnt pretty but made the show & kept the racing close.in the finals I ran out 11.06 @100 mph.so I have some issues to fix.anyway on with the pics...
this pic shows details of the center of the decklid:

roof

anyway I have tons of pics the whole way through I will put more on later..Thanks

Thanks a lot!

Now I want to go back and re-do my car. LOL
This is an AWESOME paint job and I really like it.
By the way I think that 588 inch really uses up the 284 duration very well. Did not sound that big but it realy does sound very very good.

At first , the bubbles weren't carbonating my proverbial soft drink..... but seeing the complete car , I have to say AWESOME !
You really captured the old school look and every different technique done on the paint job either accents or compliments the rest of the scheme.
Very nice !

Thanks for all the kind words from everyone.it has been a long time since I have painted anything like this.the pics I put up do not do it justice at all.here are a few in some different lighting without lettering. As for doing the scales it takes alot of time.About 7 hours a side just to do the scales,They are all airbrushed, there are 119 rows verying from 8 scales high down to a few where the wheel wells are.with candying & fogging the scaled sides for both were 20 hours straight of painting.needless to say that was no taping time.just painting.I was smoked after that.this is all done in base clear.God I miss laquer paint!anyway the more comments the more pics you get....here you go!

I am suprised that there was no mention of the wheels yet.The nos keystones I have are GM pattern.my disk brakes came with 4"&4 1/2" pattern.so I had to nix the keystones for now.So I got wheels that would be retro but modern.anyway enjoy!

Re: SS/DA cuda progress ( DONE! ) - 11/03/12 07:59 PM

Stunning . . . Absolutely Stunning

It is hard enough to copy one of these cars from that era but to build one from scratch & cover it with such an amazing & original paint job, man that's awesome.

As for the wheel choice, they work They look a bit like some old spindle mount Funny Car wheels I have seen so I wasn't sure if they were new or old.

Could you give me your diff width, wheel offset & tyre size please.

Re: SS/DA cuda progress ( DONE! ) - 11/21/12 03:09 AM

Well I got out this weekend for some testing,& same crap breaking up.so after dist change, pickup wire change,& going through the whole electrical system.I decided to change the coil.No more breaking up. here is the first clean pass & last pass of the year.1.32 60' for the first pass leaving under normal power.I lifted @ the end because it was on the limiter again.I had it set @ 7000rpm. so I will take it up a bit next year. Also working on my reaction times.I red lit first pass, had a .055 second time & on this pass .014 just sorting it out so enjoy.my wife just caught it on video so it starts on the last yellow.Let me know what you think!

Re: SS/DA cuda progress ( DONE! ) - 08/22/14 11:27 PM

Well, It's been a while since I have posted anything on this. After the pass I posted I got the car home & ready for winter, The part that stinks is that I went to change the oil & drained the oil out of the system 1 on the car & root beer metallic is not what you want to see. So I have basically left it untouched until now.For those of you still interested, I plan on pulling the Hemi out. I think that it may just be a rod bearing as the oil pressure was still good but the last time at the track it was not running right. I used a friends timing light and there is where I knew it wasn't happy.40deg. timing in a Hemi never works out well. So checked it with my light & it was at 35deg. My timing light has been off the whole time.Backed the timing off to 35 & that is the video you saw above.Fast forward this year…….I have a surprise in store……...
