Youngstown Ohio Drag City & Sunset Mercer PA.

For those that raced at Youngstown Drag City (AKA "The Swamp" or "Meander" )and Sunset over in Mercer PA - Alex Theophilos passed away this morning down in Florida. Alex was 83 years old. He and his brother George ran both tracks - many famous names raced at both tracks - Alex was the best always smiling! He started Sunset in 1959 as a dirt/gravel drag strip (that track is still running) - Drag City closed down in the late 90's after Alex & George sold it and the airport. Rest in Peace Alex - you gave us some good racing and good times!

I ran at Meander in the 60s and 70s.My cousin ran his 57 Chevy at Sunset in the 60s.First time I was there was like 65.Meander I ran at in 68.I liked when the planes came in and racing stopped.Rocky

I just saw Alex this spring when I stopped by the track. He sold me a DVD of hundereds of pictures of Sunset, it's pretty cool.
I only live 2.5 miles from the track. They've been running on and off all summer.

I got out of work early one Sunday back in April and made the short trip over to Sunset in my everyday car. I pulled in and Alex said "Good to see you! I can only give you one run though." I took the pass, dialed the car, and lost second round. That was my only trip to any track all year, and I will never forget it. Alex and I had our disagreements, but I'm sure we all have had our share of run ins with him for whatever reason. I had a lot of fun at Sunset and I surely will never forget Alex.

I'm sad to hear this news. I never met him, but my friend Mike Hanrahan (Grove City, PA) has been helping out Alex w/ running Sunset for the last couple of years, so I've been hearing about it via long distance calls.

I have to assume w/ Alex's passing that the track will be closing down.

R I P Alex- Sorry to hear the news. You guys always put on a great show. Back in the day you guys were the BADERS from Norwalk - You had some of the greatest shows in this country and super stock racing at Sunset was an experience of a life time. We never missed a Super Stock Match Race because they came from all over the country to run at your facility, it was a little short on the big end however, it was exciting.
