anybody using Roots over Centrifugal?

anybody using Roots over Centrifugal? - 10/01/11 06:11 AM

Anybody using a Roots style setup instead of the Centrifugal superchargers? I'm considering using a Roots setup myself and looking to compare everything but primarily considering cost? Is it less expensive to go with a Roots setup than it is Centrifugal now-a-days? Plus is the cam selection still important or more forgiving with Roots?

I'm looking to use a single carburetor setup on a small block stock stroke 318 or 360.....

Compare to power curve of both being equal, if your not going for max power imo id run the roots not only for the cost but the wow factor.

I found out on my pull tractors the roots have a semi narrow max efficiency area where the cent. units seem to make power across a wide range....but that was a long time ago and maybe id should not of wrote this

I bought a weiand 177 10rib belt chev kit & made an adapter plate to suite my super victor manifold on my 360.
I bought the weiand 177 so I only needed one carby
I have a much modified dominator!

either will work. Centrif's might be a tad harder because of carb prep, tubing and you have to boost reference the fuel system. but done right you can get it all under your hood.

One thing I like about the centrifugal blowers is that
you can run a inner cooler easier... yes they make
coolers for the roots also... but the roots blowers
get the big WOW factor... I still have a 8-71 sitting
in the shop that I was going to put on my 440 in my
38 Ply street rod

Good Info everyone. But what about Cam selection? I've been reading about the careful selection of the camshaft when looking into the ProChargers, etc, but is cam selection with a Roots style blower equally important?

Any pressurized induction needs the wider LSA to
keep the over lap down(wider meaning in the 114 or
so)

Thanks P.

Drag345, I like your setup. I've been looking around and I haven't found many Mopar specific kits. Am I better to fab an adapter for my current intake (Weaind Stealthon my 360) similar to how you've done your adaptor?

Anyone know of any other complete kit sources for small block Mopar?

I was going to cut off a tunnel ram and weld a plate
on it for my small blocks to run a roots 8-71 which
I have but its on a 440 type manifold... I know I
could buy a SB manifold to mount it on but I dont
use the TR anymore... I bought the blower to go on
my 38 ply but it wont fit under the hood and I dont
want to cut the hood

Yes,
Don Hampton makes a kit. Here is a picture of one installed on my friends Dart.

When I called I talked to Don himself! He is very helpful no BS.

I should add that this is a modified single four intake. It has been milled open, and has an adapter for the blower. I have pictures if needed.

Re: anybody using Roots over Centrifugal? - 10/02/11 04:58 PM

how big of a blower do you want?

on my Camaro's engine, 350/.060 over(360), I use a Weiand 142 blower with an AED 850 prepped for blower use...it all fits under the stock cowl hood..its definately stealth until you punch it...

my engine was built in the mid 80's before the new tech came in on Blower cams...

mine is cut on a 110 CL...has about .575 lift and uses Crower 1.6 roller rockers with a stud girdle..

I know we are talking apples n oranges but its still an engine ...just an air pump....

the small Weiands stock operate about 125% over driven...I have mine at 225% or 2.25 times the crank speed...they do churn up some heat so maybe you would want to consider E85 as a fuel alternative to help run cooler and make some outrageous HP...turning 4500 on the expressway, Im at 185*...cant sustain that for lengths of time, but is fun...I have to calculate that at speed...4.10 gears, 28" tire...anybody?...

A centrifugal will have less temp rise per psi than a roots.

My car is mostly a street driver that will see SOME strip time. I want the most that I can get out of the smallest single carb blower that I can fit under a cowl hood. So, I wanna fit something that sits low enough on the engine that doesn't protrude out. It won't be a deal breaker if I can't keep it all stuffed inside but really preferably I'd like to keep it all covered.

Here's the next part that I know I'm gonna get lectured on, but I'd like a good 500-525 hp engine with cast internals. If I control detonation and don't go crazy on the boost, would this still be do-able? Especially if I'm only going around the 500 hp range???

Re: anybody using Roots over Centrifugal? - 10/02/11 05:24 PM

I think in the 500hp range is doable with cast parts..

my compression is 8-1...and Im O ringed with studded heads..its a purpose built blower engine with all forgings..I do press 15psi but with 110 race fuel..Im at 10psi now with 93 and some octane booster..
