Amsoil Convert! 150 seat 400 open Looks like new! - 09/28/11 09:23 PM

Wow! We recently ran a flat tappet BB Mopar in the Amsoil Mopar Muscle Engine Masters Challenge ( see more in general section "Home from Amsoil Challenge") We had to tear down after the runs for tech inspection so I got a good look at the cam and lifters after over 12 dyno pulls--WOW! We ran a Bullet flat tappet cam , 1.6 rocker approx .650 lift and used the Scorpion lifters with the EDM oil hole. I broke the engine in on a test stand with the inner springs removed--ran it about 45 minutes. I set the final pressure 150 seat and right at 400 open. The cam and lifters looked brand new! We used the Amsoil for all break in and runs--yea....I know its synthetic...I know Joe Gibbs and a dozen others make break in oil. I have been a Mopar engine builder for going on 30 years and have been whacked just like you with ruined cam lobes etc--these past 5 years have been a nightmare but...I have to say that the Amsoil worked better than anything I have used since the way back days when oil was real and parts were USA good. Hooray for a great product!! The stuff works!!!!!!!

Which Amsoil were you running? They offer so many now it's kind of confusing.

In years past the AMSOIL/Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge specified 10W-40 AMSOIL and many of the participants were pictured in the magazine coverage pouring the AMSOIL SAE 10W-40 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil in their engines on the dyno:

AMSOIL SAE 10W-40 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil - link

AMSOIL SAE 10W-40 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil has the following ZDDP levels:

Zinc Level: 1378 (ppm)
Phosphorous Level: 1265(ppm)

In the 2011 AMSOIL/Mopar Muscle Engine Challenge, the rules state, "All engines will use AMSOIL Z-Series 10W-30-weight oil while at the Dyno."

AMSOIL Z-ROD 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (ZRT) - link

AMSOIL Z-ROD 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil has the following ZDDP levels:

Zinc Level: 1440 (ppm)
Phosphorous Level: 1320(ppm)

We're getting ready to switch the Duster over to the Dominator racing oil from Amsoil.

I have only ever used the Dominator Racing oil in my engine also. Everything looks brand new after about 60 passes.

Can we see some close pics of the lifter face and nose of the lobe?

Yea I will get some asap--we threw it all back together after tear down just to get back home--soon as I can get to it I will post pics. I am not sure which oil we ran maybe a 10W30 --will find out and post -I usually am HARD to convince about oil products but was really amazed at the look of the lobes--it had just barely changed the color or the parkerizing finish and when you figure the pressures we ran 400 open it looked perfect!

David,

You've mentioned " We" a couple times...who else is involved in this one? Was Todd in on this?

One of my best friends, Hollis Page ( HP Engine Norwood NC)runs another nearby machine shop--he entered the Mopar Muscle Magazine Engine challenge, called me and said what are we going to build? So we went in together, built a 406 BB and went to see what would happen. I have a post "Home from the Amsoil Engine Masters" in the general section--must be page 5 by now--has some more details and some pix. We are best buds and both Mopar engine guys and just thought why not. We are sitting 3rd after the dyno runs and expect final determination in a few days after they finish checking everyones budget. Rules were $5500 total for a BB mopar build --see who could do best HP per CI on pump gas. I have never used Amsoil but just had to say that it worked GREAT! Check the other thread and stay tuned --we will know soon. Todd is too busy making $$$ to enter
