urgent help excessive wheelstand - 09/25/11 04:12 AM

I went to the track today and had my best ever 9.21 at 147. The car has excessive wheel standing issues. It is lifting about 3 1/2 to 4ft for about 150-175 ft out. I tried tightening the front shocks but it didn't seem to help. It is a Cal Trac car with QA1's on all four corners. My friend shot a video and front tire is not turning at all. This is telling me that the car is just yanking the tires not pushing through beams. My Cal Trac is in the middle hole in the front. Will shock adjustments front back settle this thing down?

thanks

Whats the rear shock setting... also go up on the rear
tire pressure so you get a little slippage plus that
gets you up on the tire which will net a better ET...
when you find the right pressure you will vary it about
1/8 to a 1/4 psi for different track conditions

Do you run wheelie bars? You may need to. More weight on the nose may be needed as well, considering you can carry the fronts in the air that far.
I know little about caltracs, but can say this; if you have a car set up with the I C too low, it can aggravate wheelstands. the reason is with an I C below the neutral line it wants to instantly drop the rear and lift the front. You say the front tires don't turn, that was my clue.

I made a major change in my car, going from 50/50 to 53front/47rear weight distribution and the car settled right down and allowed the wheelie bars to control the wheel stands without unloading the back tires.
The main thing about moving that much weight is you may need to hit the tire harder to achieve weight transfer, but you will have enough torque to maintain traction so the car won't care how much weight is moved forward.

Typical approaches:
- more front end weight
- stiffer extension on front shocks
- restrict front end travel (I use this to tune for track/weather)
- wheelie bars

Judging by the fact the front tire is not turning in the air. You are looking at a change at the rear.

P-body suggested raising the rear tire pressure. I am just wondering with low tire pressure you would get some roll with the front tire as the rear tire is wadding up. Second guessing this you might even try a lower pressure. I still say if you tightened the front shocks. Try front travel limiters as some shocks just don't get it done.

A little side by side wheelstand action.

hit the tires harder, use the top hole.

put a larger torsion bar on the front,,,, it will be harder to pick the front end up

We'll got a chance to try a few things on Sunday. Here's the update!

1. tightened front shocks - little to know change went up 4 clicks

2. increased tire pressure 20 lbs - no change

3. raised front of Cal trac bar - it didn't leave as high (good thing) but it didn't feel very stable at the big end and when I lifted the back end was left to right (sway motion)

I didn't get a chance to under the car yet to see if something broke or is bent!

will update later

thanks
