Why does the Nhra call for 3 inch long wheel studs in some classes?

I think what they require (I'll have to look again) is that the stud threads into the hex portion of the lug nut by at least the diameter of the stud. In other words a 1/2" diameter wheel stud would need to thread into the hex portion of the lug nut at least a 1/2".

Exactly

The reason for needing a 3" stud is to accommodate the thickness of the aftermarket disc brakes and the thickness of the hubs of the wheels used. A 3" stud is the only way to get the stud through that thick of a wheel to get the proper engagement in the nut.

If you use a stock drum and steel wheel chances are pretty good you'll have the proper engagement with the factory studs.

Thank you it was just a question of curosity. I had a guy try to tell me it was for strength and being a machinist for the last 25 years I knew that strength was only in the Dia. of the stud.

Asking "why"
Be nice if reasons were sometimes given, but then you would have ammo to ask questions, and that likely is frowned on.

My guess, a 3" stud likely requires an aftermarket solution, and that implies higher strength and more sales for vendors. A rule that said 2? threads beyond lug nut would not solve the above issues

Next time ask about the 2 year seat belt rule.
