Advice on building a 525 hp 416. Combos and costs. - 09/21/11 03:27 PM

Looking to build a 525 hp (416) stroker and would like input pertaining to proven combos and expected costs. Motor will be street and strip (mostly street) so it must run on pump gas. Parts I have to work with-
340 block, 30 over with mains studded.
Scat H-Beam rods
E- Heads, ported with crane gold roller rockers.
RPM Air gap intake with 750 HP Holley carb.
Headman headers with 3” exhaust and flowmasters
10” 3500 Turbo Action converter built 727 Trans.
430 rear gears with 29” tall tires
All will be installed in a 3500 lb Dart.
Any input, lessons learned etc would be appreciated.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Give Dwayne a call at Porter Racing Heads and have him pick a cam for you. You might also send him your heads to have him flow them and touch them up as needed.

My little 410 stroker came in at 525 on an engine dyno.. It was a simple build..

Eddy heads ported and flowing close to 290 cfm
11:1 compression for pump gas
256 duration .630 lift roller cam
750 Holley sitting on a Super Victor
TTI headers..

Good luck with your build

The 750 carb will probally struggle to get there, a 850 won't Been there done that with a lower compression pump gas W2 headed 418 for ninesecondPhil several years back the rest looks good, I would go with what you got and IF your not happy with the results, add a bigger carb later The 750 will drive nice on the street but choke the motor down in the upper RPMs

Thanks for the responses. CAB, I drove Phil’s Cuda at VMP a few years back. Car pulled nicely and ran good numbers. This is the type of performance I am trying to accomplish.

What do you guy’s think about the converter? I am currently running it behind my 340 and it works great. Just not sure if it will be right for a 4” crank. Also, I believe the Headman headers will need to be upgraded. Unfortunately, the header flanges are a bit smaller than the exhaust ports of the heads causing restrictions. If I run the current headers how much HP do you think will be lost?

That cam is close to what I use for 520+HP...I use a 251-260 cam on a 108lca.
When you say ported heads....any idea how much work was done and by whom?

Re: Advice on building a 525 hp 416. Combos and costs. - 09/22/11 04:47 PM

Heads were ported by a local old timer. As far as I know no angle valve job was done during porting. I have been running these heads for about 5 years on a mild 340. These heads have ran 11.10 with a 100 shot of NOS. The motor is now starting to use some oil and smoke. This is a street car that I drive quite a bit in the summer and take to the track 3-4 times a year. I would like to continue running low 11s without the NOS so in my openion the 4" crank is the best way to acomplish this. I belive 525 hp will get me there.

The converter should "loosen up" quite a bit with the added torque of the 4" crank. Best thing to do before the new motor goes in is to sent to a GOOD converter guy, telling him the new combo.

Mine was 3200 pound duster w/out me
408 cast mopar crank
Eagle h beams
Wiseco pistons
10.7 comp.
Xe286 solid roller
Indybrocks
Victor intake
950 holley

3k stall
4.10 gears.

I went 11.0@122 with a 1.65 60ft. I only ran 2 passes with this combo so no tuning. Sold the motor. Guy I sold it to put in a 264@050 cam and went 126 mph.

Granted not a street car, but I was STUNNED that my 416 with RHS heads would go 10.30's first time out and a best of 10.14 at 3100#! Also, of note best 1/8 mph is 107 and change. Must have some decent mid-range power...

LOVE the 4" crank small blocks!!

Trans is 904 (no T-brake) with custom 8" converter
4.56 gears with a 29.5 tire (Would like to try 4.30's)

Motor is a run-of-the-mill deal, KB flat tops (12.2), SCAT I beam rods, custom Bullet solid (NON roller) cam, OLD Victor and an even older Holley 800 that was rubbed on to flow 848 cfm from stock at 802.

Heads are 2.02 RHS LA heads. They were inproved about 10 cfm from the supplier (bought them complete) but the peak numbers are nothing that most guys here would brag about: 268 at .600, stalling and starting to go backwards after .650". Would the car go 9.90's with a "race" head and the correct cam/converter, most likely but you cannot beat these heads for the money.
