real track back to back test. 6AL & 7AL2. Results - 09/11/11 01:48 AM

Right now I'm running the MSD 6AL and HAD the blue HVC2 coil on, but switched to the FireCore CD Coil. I'll be making 2 time runs, then swapping to a 7AL2 and red HVC2 coil. Any guesses if it'll pick up? I'm running E3 Diamond Fire plugs, so it'll be hard to read the plugs, unless I swapped back in some Autolite 64 and 65's.

The millijoules are going from 105 to 160, and input voltage to the coil from 450V to 570v. The engine is running great right now, and I'm hoping to run a new best before the switch. I made a couple of small changes from my 10.89 @ 126 pass 5 years ago.

This will be at Norwalk.

Unfortunately you are changing two things at once. Can you change the coil on the next run, and then change boxes? This is fairly typical of racers making multiple changes and not using a designed test. I did some statistical analysis years ago for a TAFC racer and at one race made several runs not changing anything, and then changed multiple things on the next run. It's impossible to sort all that out. It took me a years worth of data to figure out what he was doing with the fuel system because there were so many variables and so many duplicated runs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factorial_experiment

Try using the 2 X 2 Factorial experiment in four runs.

Run #1 - Box A, Coil A
Run #2 - Box A, Coil B
Run #3 - Box B, Coil A
Run #4 - Box B, Coil B

I agree with what you are saying, however, MSD does not recommend my blue HVC2 to run the 7 Box. I am more or less testing the whole 6 al system to a more powerful 7al system.

Been hit by both, accidentally of course, but the 6al isn't even in the same realm as far as how hard a 7AL2 hits...

My guess .02-.05 I do not like the 6al for most applications.

My on making this change, unless your needig a better ignition system, IE the current one is missing or not jumping the spark plug gap the car will not make a noticeable improvement I have seen improvements when switching boxes in starting and idle quality but not a better MPH or ET at the track until summer time when the air in the Los Angles basin would go in the toilet, IE SMOG wss so thick you could stir it

Race is this weekend. I have all of the partss, I'll just need to mount up the 7 and coil after the initial.

OK, here is the car and engine. 71 GTX, 4070 with me. 472 Hemi, 727, 3500 stall, 4:10, 325-50-15(28" tall M/T Drag Radial). Fri morn, 350 DA, 6 AL., 50/50 93 octane and 110 octane, launch @ 2000.

.176- RT
1.612 --60'
4.526--330
6.940- 1/8
101.45- 1/8
9.040
10.811- 1/4
127.21

Fri 1.29 pm, same set-up, 1350 DA, launch @2000

1.605
4.515
6.931
101.48

Same set up, 7 pm, hot track, stage @ 2500, added 1/2 gal 93 octane.

.286
1.570
4.482
6.921
100.29
9.043
10.838
125.39

OK, now , with the help of some Moparts buddies, we swapped to the 7AL and matching coil. All we had was a 7000 rpm chip. Added more 93 octane, and this was Sat morn.

1.573
4.481
6.920
100.38

100 foot from the traps, I hit the rpm chip. Also, checked the plugs, dead white. We swapped in four - 93 jets into the APD- prepped Dominator replacing the 90's.

OK, added another 1/2 gal 93, so all the 110 was surely gone. Forgot to charge the battery, got to the lanes, car died, towed to get it jumped. By the time I re-ran, car was 180 already. I was flustered. Wasted run

-.015
1.650
4.603
7.058
99.77
9.194
10.993

I had 2 inches of 93 in the tank. I added 2 inches of 114. Last run, Kahn from Bob George Racing gave me a 7400 chip. THANK YOU !!

.214
1.595
4.520

100.77
9.064
10.852
126.01

It liked a little bit of race fuel. Timing is locked @ 35 deg. Plugs looked better after this pass.

To sum it up, My best runs were with the 6 box. I am keeping the 7 hooked up until Indy. Thenn I'll make some passes, then switch back to the 6. I think I was on a run with the 7 until I hit the chip. Then I think running the 93 octane played a part. More or less, I think using the 7, and jetting up would have netted me better passes.

Rich.... pre blend your fuel so it stays the same...
also record the DA on each run... those 2 factors could
have been your differences(most likely the fuel when
you added 114)... plus changing jets didnt help with
your 6AL to 7AL testing

Throw the results out the window and start again Test, test and test some more One change at a time and do the A,B,A sequences to validate the results
