Muffler Question on 500" Challenger

Muffler Question on 500" Challenger - 09/03/11 01:45 PM

After driving a ton between the Nats and Woodward, I have decided that my Flowmasters are entirely too loud for proper enjoyment, plus the fact that my 3 year old little one loves riding in the car. Would I be better to throw on some Dynomax Bullets after the Flowmasters or replace them completely? Any opinions appreciated. I have 4" pipes out the back.

The drone inside my car is obnoxious, that is why I was wondering if the bullets after the flowmasters might help out enough. Your Challenger sounded good inside---not too loud.

A friend of mine added some bullets in front of his mufflers(not flowmasters) a few years ago and it did make it quieter and it didn't lost any of its sound quaility.

Dynomax super turbos in 3" are "drone resistant" and not too noisy until you get on it. Another option is to add some 3" glasspacks under the trunk as resonators if you have the room.

I know I've said this a million times here but the PYPES brand stainless straight through mufflers are only $75 each and didn't slow my 9 second Dart down at all.
I also ran an X-pipe and Magnaflows on my 9 second DartSport and didn't slow down, even with a 75 pound exhaust system.

The Ultraflows are nice too, and so are the Dynatech split flows.

I have my one chamber flowmasters for sale on my current car(now DIRT cheap if you PM me) because they are way too loud for me on a street car.

Magnaflow has a lot of options. The larger the muffler body the more you turn the volume down.

I personally loved the X-pipe I put on a 65 dart.

I have a 3" exhaust from collectors to tips with Magnaflows on this 505" motor. The owner of the exhaust shop said the dynomax superturbos would be WAY too quiet. Well, not for me, but everyone says the car sounds awesome. Ultimately, I only need to please me...

These are too loud to really have a conversation in the car, but it does sound pretty good...

After hearing a Cuda with a similar motor, I decided to try out the Borla. Amazon had them cheaper than Summit. I will update once installed.

You just got to love an old 4 spd ripping down the road.
Very nice.

These are Dynomax Hemi Turbos with a 3 1/2 to 3" X pipe and full 3" TTI's going all the way back.

Nothing but Everywhere I go. BTW this is a 517" 12:1 max wedge with a big overlap roller; I knew a motor like this would be way too loud with Ultraflows or any other straight through system.

I Ran 3" 3 chamber FMasters on my old 550 horse 451 low deck duster with FLowmaster pulse techs phased 180 and a full 3", it had super nice tone but it was just too loud at idle and droned worst in the 2500-3500 range, a pair of Dynomax bullets used as resonators kept the tone, killed the drone and dropped the Db's to a very tolerable level.

I'm personally fond of my 3" Ultra Flos. The but dyno tells me they flow WAY better than the 40s Flowmasters, but they don't have the drone or interior noise.

with the new combo...

a couple with the old combo...

I'm sure there are better sounding systems out there...but if there is, I haven't found it yet.

Re: Muffler Question on 500" Challenger - 09/13/11 11:17 PM

I switched to magna flows. It's still loud, but not as much drone as the flowmasters. Old exhaust was 3in, no cross over, 2 chamber flomasters. New is 3.5, magna flows, X-pipe.

My car is about 30 seconds into the video:

I have a set of Magnaflow 14x3 inch ovals with a side inlet and center outlet mounted at the rear bumper, straight 3 inch pipes from the header to the muffs.I can listen to the radio at part throttle very easily

Re: Muffler Question on 500" Challenger - 09/18/11 12:51 PM

I finally cruised around and spent about 2 hours in car with new 4" Borlas and wanted to update. First off, no headache. The car is still nearly as loud at idle, but cruising at 3k is totally different. No drone and can barely hear exhaust. All and all, it made the car more enjoyable, but still sounds good.

Re: Muffler Question on 500" Challenger - 09/18/11 02:39 PM

Yes, that's the car. The exhaust is low, but no lower than the rear crossmember. The pipes go all the way out to the valance.
