727 transmission case questions - 08/29/11 06:19 PM

I have a LOCK-UP 727 from a '78 400. Can this case be used with NON-LOCKUP internals (from a '74 318 truck 727) for a race transmission, behind a 440? What parts are interchangeable from lock up to non lockup?
I have a TA manual valve body and a TA converter, what else is needed? Also have many kick down lever ratios to choose from.

Thanks,
Brian Dunnigan

I used a case from a lock up 904 for a non lock up before. The difference in lock up vs non in either is the front input shaft has an oiling hole in it, the front guts, front pump I think, and valve body.

I cant tell ya for sure which parts are different, but its internals basically.

The 904 I changed out is still alive, and I dont recall changing or blocking any fluid passages.

I changed my 518 lock up with OD to a standard 727
but with OD... its the input shaft... the lock up
one has a hole down through the center to pass oil
through it... the non lock up doesnt have the hole
John Cope set me up with the parts... I also changed
the whole front pump(wasnt sure if the pump drive lugs
would fit and standard converter)

The only thing I can add, is that along with the input shaft, you need to swap the reaction support since the passages are different. This is the part that covers the pump gears on the inside of the transmission.

Yes you can use the case for a race non lockup , but no you cannot use it behind a 440 if it came from a 318 !

The reaction shafts are the same EXCEPT for that third ball. It can be removed though with a pointed carbide burr and a bent tipped punch. If I can do it, you can too. A 904 is the same too, remove the ball and you have a late, two ring input shaft reaction shaft. If you don't remove it though you'll end up with a blue torque converter.

Curious, which 727 only used one ball and one open hole??

All 727's prior to '78 had only one ball and one hole.
