http://www.facebook.com/groups/159285619420/

Excellent page, with outstanding photos.

I grew up there and must have made a couple thousand runs down that track..

Very sad day when it closed October 29th 1983...

Anyway, enjoy..

The best part is, you can add photos and comments if you have any from O.C.I.R...

You have to join to view..

Love the $2.00 admission.. And $15.00 for bracket racing.

Isn't It..

You don't even have to ever raced or attended OCIR to enjoy the memories...

I was just fortunate to have the opportunity to live it.

When you rented the track, you got to use the tower and timing equipment.

I worked for Centerline back then and got VIP Passes to the Tower..

That was a pretty nice track, used to drive down there from the SFV a lot. Besides the 64 Funny Car shows, once saw an F4 putting in overhead with one engine smoking, and saw some guy in a Camaro put the car OVER the guardrail along the right lane and into the grass, upside down. Wasn't even a big wheelie, just bad-outta-shape and he wouldn't lift.
Man, it was a special era when Lions, Irwindale & OCIR were all open; lotsa times we agonized over where to go. Lions usually won out until it closed.

I worked with a guy that grew up in the Corona area. He and his dad would race wed, thurs, fri, sat and sunday during the hey day of drag racing. Anyone doubting the phrase "the good ole days" needs to look no further than those photos.

Just think how the PSCA would be if all those tracks were still up and running.

Most Likely, I would have never left..

That would have been great to see PSCA at all the great Race Tracks of So. Cal.

Here is Mark Hollenstein's Artwork of his view.. And this didn't include Palmdale (LACR), Colton, or Saugus,

It's a business park

An aerial pic of the place, you can see the bend in I-5 and the fence line to the military base in the upper right corner.

Great place to run and hang out. Was disappointed when it shut down. People in the area complained about it and there was the military base right next door. They complained about the base too...

Lions however, is just a storage yard.. Last time I saw it..

Could re-open with some effort..

Chris,
The best thing I remember about OCIR was taking my wife there on our honeymoon in July of 1971. What a great race facility. It was ahead of it's time.

I made my first pass down that strip in the summer of 75, I had just bought my own cuda and spent the week before putting on a set of headers or a Edelbrock LD340 with a 3310 780 carb. I was thrilled that it ran a 13.80. I was instantly hooked. Later I got a job at service center in Torrance and spent every weekend i could at OCIR and Irwindale. On the weekends I could not make it ddown there I was cruising Redondo/Hermosa or up on Manchester Blvd, in Inglewood. WE would race down Pershing drive behind LAX. Now those were the good old days.

I still go by Lions and see the old strip, maybe if I can win a big lotto I can buy the land and start racing again
