Track report ! - 08/25/11 05:35 AM

Yes I drove to the track tonight and put 2 passes on my 63. I had some problems and found out it was way lean.
First pass it just would not rev good and felt real flat......11.27 @ 113 !

Yuk but my brother was watching and he said it looked good as it pulled about 6 inches under the front wheels but I said it felt real bad. I had just stuck the 850 DP on that was on my old 440 and I knew it needed more carb but I used what I had. Well we pulled the 80 primary jets and put 86's in. Car started fine and idled fine. Next and final pass for the night.........11.04 @ 121.42. Ok we made a drastic jet change to find out we are going in the right direction. We were going to pull the secondary bowl but I decided to call it a night as my back was hurting alot and my left knee was giving me alot of pain and I was not up to any more work. So I called it a night telling myself that 11.04 @ 121 is not to bad for the second ever pass on my pump gas full exh 3700 lb street car that I drove the 90 mile round trip. I will pull the carb and work it over this week. I wish I had a Dominator or a nice 950 to try but I will use what I have. I honestly think it has easy 10.80's or better and I hope to find out soon. I know I could have jetted the secondary side and came home with a 10.9 something pass but I was just not up to it. I had fun and hope to get back to the track in a month or so. Ron

Geez, 11.04 @ 121 first time out, 3700#, DRIVEN there and back...

GREAT first couple of laps! Congrats!!!!

Sorry about your pains, but you're right..it's alot less fun when you're hurting, is it?

This fall it will go in the 10's EASY with the 850, but yea it probably needs more air and fuel.

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 05:45 AM

I am impressed Ron, that thing is running nice and strong! And the fact that it is a pump gas engine that can be driven and knock of 10 second passes is saying something in my book! I myself would like to see my car run an easy 11.50 or so with its current gear and driveline setup and I would be a happy man! Your are definitly running old school iron and showing the guys with modern muscle that the older cars can still perform and show them some taillights.

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 05:45 AM

cool !
glad it went well
maybe you need to step up to a proform 950 or Hp1000,bit bigger than a Holley 850
they are cheap enough on your end of the world

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 10:55 AM

Congrats Ron
I thought 10.90's first time out, so i wasn't to far off. I agree with Tex a 950 or bigger carb would help it, maybe play with timing and carb jetting.
At least you had no major issues.
What were your 1/8 mile times and 60ft, also weather.

That car is definitely smelling of the 10's!! I bet it felt good to return to the track after such a long absence. Has your job situation improved? Keep us posted.

Good first outing,Ron!! I would like to see a Dominator on your 493...Then...Hang on!!

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 01:51 PM

Good first outing for sure. You need a 1050 dominator in my opinion and the 2-circuit works fine on the street when dialed in. Save yourself lots of pain and wear and tear on your motor and install a wide band..............you`ll get that 10 sec. pass first time out after tweeking it on the street and not hurt your motor.

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 02:35 PM

CONGRATS RON! I agree with Thumper. A 1050 will do that motor right! I agree 10.80's in your future. Gotta feed the beast!

Congrat's on the first outing Ron, Good #'s

X2 on the wideband, I installed one on my car this year and it's been real helpful.

Good deal Ron, been looking forward to that

6" wheelies are pretty good for a street car

Congrats on getting out and running the beast!

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 07:52 PM

Sounds like a good first outing. Little carb tuning with what to got will get you that 10 in hot weather.

Re: Track report ! - 08/25/11 10:38 PM

Most 950 carbs are smaller than an 850 DP so don't go backwards.

The only "true" 950 that I'm aware of is the new 80805 Holley. Otherwise you might as well stick with the 850 and just get it dialed in correctly.

Best of luck with you new motor.

. Can't wait to hear more. When are you going back out?

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 02:15 AM

Andy, with all due respect, didn't you just say in your last HP forum that the new Holley 950 was too big for any thing smaller than a 512 or some thing like that? 383 is running a 493 Cubic incher.

As far as Dominators, they are fine with most biggie blocks, but very few have made the magic number with them on a true street driven car like 383 as well as mine. I mean his 493 is very small compared to what's out there nowadays. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe there's a guru out there that can take the new Holley and make it run with his combo and still act civil on the street.

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 02:25 AM

Way to go, Ron, .41 quicker IIRC with only a SWAG jet-change. There's a 10 in your immediate future, using the 850. A while back there was a thread about a 4150-body 1050CFM Holley, don't recall whose but it sounded promising.

That is awesome, but it scares me that you have driven it that far with it possibly being too lean.

I have only driven it on the street where it felt fine driving normal. I would hit it a little once in a while but not really putting it to the floor and leaving it there as it felt fine even with a quick nailing the throttle. It had 80's and 86's in it with a 3.5 P/V up front. It drove fine going home and has not overheated or has no ping so I dont think it hurt anything. Ron

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 02:23 PM

Thanks for all the kind replies. Here is the rest of the #'s:

60 - 1.57
330 - 4.157
1/8 - 7.012
mph - 97.88
1000 - 9.189
1/4 - 11.044
mph - 121.42

I will have to stick with the 850 DP for now but I will jet the secondary up some and may even mill the choke air horn off. Thanks again for the replies. Ron

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 03:07 PM

Nice first outing Ron For sure there's lots more in it

Fwiw, mine made best power with 34* total timing using the EZ heads so that might be something to consider

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 03:22 PM

Nice job, buddy!

Pretty sure a Pro-systems tweaked 1000HP like on mine would suit your very similar combo, I'd imagine you could put that thing solidly in the 10.65 range or better once you're sorted. That Max Wedge dual plane really likes a lot of CFM and traction/torque is definately going to be a chassis tuning challenge to really plant all the ET potential you're going to bring.

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 03:23 PM

good job Ron. 10's are in reach easy. Makes me want to step it up a bit on my ride...lol

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 03:42 PM

Great first time out! You know you have a street ride that will run in the 10's, so I say well done! You can buy a new intake and a dominator and maybe pick up a tenth or two after tweaking and spending a grand. If it were me, I would just keep the nice street carb 850 and dial it in at the track next time out.

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 04:02 PM

From what I recall you posting of the combination, I'd have expected more MPH, even w/ a chassis that wasn't hooking. Where is your timing set and how lean is that 850?
Posted By: 383man

Re: Track report ! - 08/26/11 04:08 PM

Brad it was pretty lean. I was hoping to do more like 125 which I hope it will once I jet some more and mess with the timing. It was definetly still lean as it was holding back and even popping in the top of the gears. Ron

Thanks Tom but my buddy just told me about an hr ago to try his 950 Proform. So when I go back to the track I will run the 850 and then the 950. He told me if I like the 950 to keep it on the car as he wants to put the 850 back on his car which is a street car that he never races. Ron

11.04 @ 121 ? AWESOME!! There's a bit MORE
in your combo Ron and to say 10.9's, would be on the conservative side! Take care of your back, feel better and "KEEP ON MAXIN' 'EM"!!

Make sure you have good fuel pressure at the carb when you are in the traps too.
