How Fast with Indy EZ heads?

How Fast with Indy EZ heads? - 08/14/11 05:34 AM

Just curious how fast you guys are going with them. I am running a set on my engine builders Duster, and so far the pump gas motor has pushed it to 10.40's and almost into the 10.30's, just curious how fast you can go. These are unported and so far, not being a wedge guy, I am impressed on how hard the car leaves. It carried the front wheels this week +30' at about 10" off the ground.....

I,AM WORKING ON A 1973 PRO STREET DUSTER WITH A 440 O30 SIX PISTONS STEEL CRANK . A 590 CAM OR A 625 ROLLER. WHAT INTAKE IS THE BEST FOR THE EZ-1 HEADS A MAX WEDGE OR US A SINGLE FOUR?

440-2 indy- second thought with those pistons, lower RPM, dual plane single from indy, not sure of the numbers. I'm sure there are other good dual planes to use.

Wow 6.22 in the 1/8th....But mph is low at only 101?

We ran 6.61 last week at over 102mph. I have to look and see, but I am pretty sure we had one time slip at 103mph, but our gearing is for 1/4 racing. I am impressed so far, and I am sure 6.50's are just a couple hundred rpm higher on the launch, but I leave nice and easy on it while we dial in the 4-link. I had to actually abort one run as we got the shock damping too tight, but we made some nice progress on the next couple of passes. So far the best 60ft has been a 1.465s...

I went 6.80 @ 101 in the heat in my chally at 3850lbs on 93 pump gas only time out with combo.

they were the CNC EZ's with a 308 port volume done by jeff at MCH on here!

Are you talking about a factory max wedge intake or one of the indy intakes? The factory maxi intakes are 70+ HP down on a good single plane.

New motor this weekend, 440 block, 440 Source 523" stroker, With the INDY EZ heads...time trials today #1 6.200 #2 6.206 #3 6.198 this is 1/8th mile, with a 3360 lb car with driver in it. The DA was at 1500 plus or minus all day

Re: How Fast with Indy EZ heads? - 08/15/11 04:36 AM

Just depends on how well your car hooks and how much it weighs. My current motor is making about 850 hp with EZ heads so that is enough power to run 8's in a well sorted out door slammer. In a rail it would go even faster.

Why would the max wedge be down on HP ?over a single four?stock 426 max wedge was at 415 or 426 HP This is a good 440 with good pistons and good cam 590-625 roller .The EZ-1 heads would not keep the HP around 425 ?or more ?

That manifold is a restriction, if nothing has been done to it. The newer single plane intakes will outflow them. I know they are great for the cool factor, but for performance they are down. Read AndyF's book, he did back to back dyno tests, down 80HP.

Re: How Fast with Indy EZ heads? - 08/15/11 02:40 PM

It's not that the cross ram will not make any HP just not as much as a good single plane. Sell the cross ram to someone that needs it for a nostalgia super stock if its modified or to someone doing a restoration if is unmodified. The cross ram intake will bring enough to buy a good single plane and a new carburetor.

I'm not a big fan of using six pack pistons in a engine with big heads and big cam. Too heavy.

Re: How Fast with Indy EZ heads? - 08/16/11 11:53 AM

As i found out to my cost, my old 440, stock 6 pack rods, 6 pack pistons, ported iron heads, then later edelbrocks, Crane R280 Roller. Revved it to 7000 trying to get in the 10's, spun a bearing and a rod exited the sump.
New 440, smaller flat tappet cam, better recriprocating assembly, more comp, old heads int and carb, time in sig and i think there's maybe a 10.1 in the car, shift at 6200 trap at 6500.

5.95@114 at 3300lbs footbraking with a 499" on race gas. They are the EZ-1's cnc ported by Modern. The cam is to small for the motor but seems to work well. The car is at the chassis shop now getting a backhalf done to it then I can up the cam and switch to e-85.

Re: How Fast with Indy EZ heads? - 08/17/11 02:51 PM

Jeff takes a stock ez head and cncs them to 308 port volume an still uses stock rocker gear! The ez1 is the same as standard ez head just the ports start out max wedge size... Any more than that you go to the 325s which is the only ez head that takes offset rocker... I did have a baby cam in my chally at 248/254 @ 50 but it worked good...

It has a 4.30 gear in it and the EZ heads run the standard location Harland Sharps. The cam is something like a .636 lift solid roller wide lobe seperation. I don't have the card in front of me but once I get more tire under the car I'll be looking for somemore power.

On my 64 car that weighed in @ 3150 lbs the EZ heads with MW port and an oe cross ram on a 493 ci I did get a best of 9.98 but most times it ran 10.10 to 10.15 in the 1/4.

Some fast combos with these heads. Looks like with porting we would be in the 9's with our pump gas combo...What is the main difference between these and say the 440-1's, the port height?

use stock rockers except for the big EZ heads than their similar to -1s

Mine are MW ports. Also another good thing about the heads is there are no external oil lines to mess with unless you go with the big ez's.
